Metabolomic fingerprint of Reynoutria japonica (Polygonaceae) using suspect screening with LC-HRMS and untargeted approach with GC-HRMS.

Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is an invasive plant whose ecological dominance in its invasive range may partly rely on allelopathic interactions mediated by root exudates and especially secondary metabolites of wide polarity range. To elucidate the chemical diversity of these exudates, a metabolomic strategy combining liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was employed. After optimization of EcoRoot methodology with design of experiment (DoE), root exudates were sampled with 3 d

New insights in to the ameliorative effects of zinc and iron oxide nanoparticles to arsenic stressed spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.).

Nanotechnology is capturing great interest worldwide due to their stirring applications in various fields and also individual application of iron oxide nanoparticle (FeO-NPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO-NPs) have been studied in many literatures. However, the combined application of FeO and ZnO-NPs is a novel approach and studied in only few studies. For this purpose, a pot experiment was conducted to examine the plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attributes, oxidative stress and response of antioxidant compounds (enzymatic and nonenzymatic), sugars, nutrition

Removal of sulfonamides from water by wetland plants: Performance, microbial response and mechanism.

Sulfonamides are widely used in the clinical and animal husbandry industry because of their antibacterial properties and low cost. However, Sulfonamides cannot be fully absorbed by human bodies or animals, 50 %-90 % will be discharged from the bodies, and enter waters and soils through a variety of ways, causing environmental harm. Phytoremediation as a green in situ repair technology has been proven effective in sulfonamides removal, but the underlying mechanisms are still a question that needs to be further studied. In order to explore the relationship between SAs removal and plants (S. vali

XoxF and the Calvin-Benson cycle mediate lanthanide-dependent growth on methanol in Bradyrhizobium and Sinorhizobium.

Nodule-forming bacteria play crucial roles in plant health and nutrition by providing fixed nitrogen to leguminous plants. Despite the importance of this relationship, how nodule-forming bacteria are affected by plant exudates and soil minerals is not fully characterized. Here, the effects of plant-derived methanol and lanthanide metals on the growth of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobiales are examined. Prior work has demonstrated that select Bradyrhizobium strains can assimilate methanol only in the presence of lanthanide metals; however, the pathway enabling assimilation remains unknown. In this stud

Elucidation of a diurnal pattern of catechin exudation by Centaurea stoebe.

The exudation of secondary metabolites at phytotoxic concentrations has been proposed as a mechanism of invasion for some exotic plant species. Catechin is a natural flavanoid implicated in the potential allelopathic interactions of Centaurea stoebe. However, recent studies have shown that catechin is highly unstable and not likely to accumulate in growing medium at phytotoxic concentrations. All previous studies that investigated the allelopathic potential of catechin assumed a continuous exudation of this compound by C. stoebe. Contrary to this, but similar to many other plant secondary meta

Metabolomic profiling reveals root exudation pattern as regulated by phosphorus and light in contrasting rice cultivars.

Phosphorus (P) fixation in soils constrains its bioavailability, driving the evolution of adaptive strategies in plants, such as root morphology plasticity and exudation. This study systematically compared changes in root exudation pattern in a low-P-tolerant rice cultivar “Dalixiang” and a P-susceptible cultivar “Meixiangzhan” under different light intensities and P supplies. The results showed that, (1) Under P deficiency, Dalixiang exhibited a significantly increased root-to-shoot ratio, whereas Meixiangzhan showed a weaker ability to cope with P deficiency and low light. (2) Light intensit

How functional is a trait? Phosphorus mobilization through root exudates differs little between Carex species with and without specialized dauciform roots.

Root structures secreting carboxylates and phosphatases are thought to enhance a plant's phosphorus (P) acquisition. But do closely related species with and without such structures really differ in root exudation, P mobilization, or ecological niche? We investigated this by comparing 23 European Carex species with and without 'dauciform roots' (DRs). Plants grown in pots with sand were screened for DR formation, phosphatase activities, carboxylate exudation, and utilization of various organic and inorganic P compounds. Ecological niches were compared using ecological indicator values and nutri

Combined application of plant growth-promoting bacteria and iron oxide nanoparticles ameliorates the toxic effects of arsenic in Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi L.).

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as arsenic (As)] is becoming a serious global problem because of the rapid development of the social economy. Although plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and nanoparticles (NPs) are the major protectants to alleviate metal toxicity, the study of these chemicals in combination to ameliorate the toxic effects of As is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of different levels of Providencia vermicola (5 ppm and 10 ppm) and iron oxide nanoparticles (FeO-NPs) (50 mg/l-1 and 100 mg/l-1) on plant gr

Trehalose tetraester-producing Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 enhances alfalfa-assisted rhizosphere remediation of phenanthrene-contaminated soil through plant metabolic reprogramming and microbiome assembly.

Biosurfactant-assisted rhizosphere remediation is a promising strategy for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soils; however, the mechanisms by which biosurfactants regulate host plant responses to PAH stress and drive rhizosphere microbiome assembly remain unclear. Here, we constructed an alfalfa-assisted rhizosphere remediation system using novel trehalose tetraesters (TTEs) and TTE-producing Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 to remediate phenanthrene-contaminated soil and decoded mechanisms via multi-omics. The colonization of KB1 and TTE-mediated rhizosphere regulation enhanced

Boron-efficient varieties promote the green production of sugarbeets in boron-deficient environments by recruiting beneficial rhizosphere soil microorganisms via root exudates.

Boron (B)-efficient varieties are more capable of thriving in low-B conditions, decrease the depletion of B ore resources and reduce the likelihood of environmental contamination caused by the excessive B fertilizer inputs. However, how B-efficient beets influence soil microbiome and adapt to a B-deficient environment remain largely enigmatic. This study examines the relationship between the rhizosphere microbiome and root metabolomics using beet B-efficient (KWS1197) and B-inefficient (KWS0143) varieties. Results showed that the amount of root exudates released by B-efficient sugarbeet variet

The root exudates of wild tomato compared to a modern variety maintain elevated soluble soil phosphorus by interacting with rhizosphere microbiota.

Wild plants are periodically exposed to nutrient flushes, whereas modern cultivars are acclimated to regular nutrition from fertilizers. Phosphorus (P) fertilizers, however, convert into unavailable forms in soil. Here, we assessed plant growth, rhizosphere microbiome, and root exudation of a wild and modern tomato to determine how a wild crop relative responds to a flush of P fertilization. We found that the modern tomato relatively lacked P-mineralizers and grew quickly, depleting soil P. Conversely, wild tomato continued growth and promoted an array of beneficial soil bacteria, resulting in

Interactions between hydrogen sulphide and nitric oxide regulate two soybean citrate transporters during the alleviation of aluminium toxicity.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is emerging as an important signalling molecule involved in plant resistance to various stresses. However, the underlying mechanism of H2 S in aluminium (Al) resistance and the crosstalk between H2 S and nitric oxide (NO) in Al stress signalling remain elusive. Citrate secretion is a wide-spread strategy for plants against Al toxicity. Here, two citrate transporter genes, GmMATE13 and GmMATE47, were identified and characterized in soybean. Functional analysis in Xenopus oocytes and transgenic Arabidopsis showed that GmMATE13 and GmMATE47 mediated citrate exudation and

Allergenic agent in contact dermatitis from Holigarna ferruginea.

9 of 10 patients who developed dermatitis following contact with Holigarna ferruginea and 5 of 35 asymptomatic volunteers showed a positive patch test reaction to 2% W/V acetone extract of the plant's resinous exudate. 6 albino rats were sensitized following 3 weekly applications of the same extract. Laccol (3-heptadecadienyl catechol) was identified as the active principle in the exudate.

Drought-Induced Accumulation of Root Exudates Supports Post-drought Recovery of Microbes in Mountain Grassland.

Droughts strongly affect carbon and nitrogen cycling in grasslands, with consequences for ecosystem productivity. Therefore, we investigated how experimental grassland communities interact with groups of soil microorganisms. In particular, we explored the mechanisms of the drought-induced decoupling of plant photosynthesis and microbial carbon cycling and its recovery after rewetting. Our aim was to better understand how root exudation during drought is linked to pulses of soil microbial activity and changes in plant nitrogen uptake after rewetting. We set up a mesocosm experiment on a meadow

Impact of foliar application of syringic acid on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under heavy metal stress-insights into nutrient uptake, redox homeostasis, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defense.

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as lead (Pb)] is becoming a serious global problem due to the rapid development of the social economy. However, accumulation of Pb in plant parts is very toxic for plant growth and decreases crop yield and productivity. In the present study, we have investigated the different concentrations of Pb in the soil i.e., [0 (no Pb), 50, and 100 mg kg-1] to study plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments and gas exchange characteristics, oxidative stress indicators and the response of various antioxidants (enzymatic and non-enzymatic), nutrition

The effects of iron deficiency on lead accumulation in Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle seedlings.

Understanding the effects of root Fe deficiency on the uptake and translocation of toxic metals can be important for improving the phytoremediation strategies of polluted soils. The present study investigated how Fe nutritional status affects the uptake and root-to-shoot-translocation of Pb in hydroponically grown seedlings of (Mill.) Swingle. The interactions of Fe deficiency and Pb were assessed by measuring the root Fe(III) reductase activity, carboxylic acids concentration in root exudates, root and shoot biomass, and accumulation of Pb and other metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in roots and le

Recent advancements in multifaceted roles of flavonoids in plant-rhizomicrobiome interactions.

The rhizosphere consists of a plethora of microbes, interacting with each other as well as with the plants present in proximity. The root exudates consist of a variety of secondary metabolites such as strigolactones and other phenolic compounds such as coumarin that helps in facilitating communication and forming associations with beneficial microbes in the rhizosphere. Among different secondary metabolites flavonoids (natural polyphenolic compounds) continuously increasing attention in scientific fields for showing several slews of biological activities. Coumarin biosynthesis genes are required after foliar pathogen infection for the creation of a microbial soil-borne legacy that primes plants for SA-dependent defenses.

Plants deposit photosynthetically-fixed carbon in the rhizosphere, the thin soil layer directly around the root, thereby creating a hospitable environment for microbes. To manage the inhabitants of this nutrient-rich environment, plant roots exude and dynamically adjust microbe-attracting and -repelling compounds to stimulate specific members of the microbiome. Previously, we demonstrated that foliar infection of Arabidopsis thaliana by the biotrophic downy mildew pathogen Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis (Hpa) leads to a disease-induced modification of the rhizosphere microbiome. Soil condition

Revisiting plant-microbe interaction mechanisms for developing efficient biostimulants.

The diverse and often complex challenges arising from climate change, severe soil degradation and agricultural intensification due to increased use of synthetic agrochemicals, have exacerbated the need for sustainable agricultural systems that can sustain crop productivity with less reliance on agrochemicals. Plant microbe interactions really help in this transition as they influence plant growth, nutrient access, adaptation to stress, and defense against pathogens. Plants interact with many belowground microbes in the rhizosphere through an incredibly diverse set of root exudates that act as
