Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) impair the lives of 1 billion people worldwide, and threaten the health of millions more. Although vaccine candidates have been proposed to prevent some NTDs, no vaccine is available at the market yet. Vaccines against NTDs should be low-cost and needle-free to reduce the logistic cost of their administration. Plant-based vaccines meet both requirements: plant systems allow antigen production at low cost, and also yield an optimal delivery vehicle that prevents or delays digestive hydrolysis of vaccine antigens. This review covers recent reports on the develo

Lesions in 4 field cases (3 sheep and 1 goat) of 'waterpens' or water belly, caused by the plant Galenia africana, are described. The clinical pathological and pathological findings in 7 sheep which were drenched with toxic plant material are also reported. Inappetence, ruminal stasis and apathy as well as tachycardia were noticed in some of the sheep towards the end of the dosing period. The most prominent clinical pathological change in the experimental animals was an increase in the activity of gamma-glutamyltransferase which in some animals occurred within days after commencement of dosing

This study evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-edema properties of fractions of Coriandrum sativum Linn. (Apiaceae/Umbelliferae) leaves in mice. Ethyl acetate fractions (FAc) were obtained from dichloromethane extracts prepared from dried C. sativum (CS) leaves and stems. The effects of different concentrations of FAc on mice were observed using the open-field test, formalin-, capsaicin-, and carrageenan-induced paw edema tests, and the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test. Results from the carrageenan-induced paw edema test were subjected to a linear regression analysis and data fro

Nicotiana tabacum is a cash crop that originated in America and was introduced to the world by Christopher Colombus. It is now cultivated in many countries with major producers including China, the USA, India, and Brazil. The plant was widely used by the indigenous people of America for different reasons (spiritual, hallucination, and medical). The medicinal usage of the plant was confirmed by many phytochemical and pharmacological studies on different parts of the plant. The plant essentially contains alkaloids (nicotine is the major component) and phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, tanni

Foreign material is an uncommon finding in routine gastrointestinal histopathology, but may occasionally contribute to disease pathogenesis or create diagnostic pitfalls. We report two illustrative cases highlighting the diverse clinical and histologic implications of ingested plant material. The first case involves a 10-year-old boy who presented with clinical features consistent with acute appendicitis and underwent appendectomy. Although gross examination revealed a macroscopically unremarkable appendix, histological evaluation demonstrated mucosal ulceration associated with an impacted pla

Kidney diseases are expected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2040. Several physiological failures classified as pre-, intra-, and post-renal factors induce kidney damage. Diabetes, liver pathologies, rhabdomyolysis, and intestinal microbiota have been identified as pre-renal factors, and lithiasis or blood clots in the ureters, prostate cancer, urethral obstructions, prostate elongation, and urinary tract infections are post-renal factors. Additionally, the nephrotoxicity of drugs has been highlighted as a crucial factor inducing kidney injuries. Due to the adverse effects of dru

Organic (such as parasites or vegetable remnants) and inorganic substances may be encountered during routine pathology diagnostic work up of endoscopic gastrointestinal biopsy samples and major resections, causing possible diagnostic conundrums for the young and not so young pathologists. The main aim of this review is the description of the most frequent oddities one can encounter as foreign bodies, in gastrointestinal pathology, on the basis of the current literature and personal experience. The types of encountered substances are divided into four principal categories: parasites (helminths

Artemisia species are aromatic herbs used as food and/or ethnomedicine worldwide; however, the use of these plants is often impeded by misidentification. Here, molecular and chemotaxonomic approaches were combined to assist in the morphology-based authentication of Artemisia species, and Artemisia indica and Artemisia argyi were identified. The plant extracts and compounds obtained from these species, 1,8-cineole, carveol, α-elemene, α-farnesene, methyl linolenate, diisooctyl phthalate inhibited the growth of food-borne harmful bacteria. Mechanistic studies showed that the extract and active c

Mast cells (MCs) are cells of hematopoietic origin that normally reside in mucosal tissues, often near epithelial cells, glands, smooth muscle cells, and nerves. Best known for their contributions to pathology during IgE-associated disorders such as food allergy, asthma, and anaphylaxis, MCs are also thought to mediate IgE-associated effector functions during certain parasite infections. However, various MC populations also can be activated to express functional programs--such as secreting preformed and/or newly synthesized biologically active products--in response to encounters with products

The possibility that some acidic amino acids occurring naturally or as additives in the diet can act as excitotoxins producing central nervous system pathology has been the subject of extensive debate in the last 20 years and is here reviewed. High doses of glutamate, aspartate or related excitatory amino acids given in isolation to neonatal rodents produce acute degeneration organs. Neuropathology resulting from consumption of glutamate or aspartate has not been described in man. Various unusual amino acids of plant origin can produce acute excitotoxic syndromes. In man domoate (consumed in m

Plant food allergy (FA) is a major global health problem, being peanut one of the most studied allergenic foods worldwide. Biomarkers (Bms) are essential tools for precision medicine, guiding diagnosis, risk stratification, and treatment. However, evidence on their clinical applicability in plant FA remains limited and fragmented. Therefore, we aim to systematically review the Bms identified in plant FA related to several aspects of the pathology. This systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web

Ustilago maydis is a biotrophic fungus that causes smut disease in maize, leading to tumor formation on aerial parts of the plant. While U. maydis has been a model for plant-fungal interaction studies, no tool has existed to automatically quantify infection symptoms under laboratory conditions for deep learning analysis. To address this, we developed a rotating camera system that captures videos of plants under customized lighting and shutter settings. These videos were used to train machine learning models to distinguish between healthy and infected plants. Two detection approaches have been

The arthroconidial yeast genera Geotrichum and Magnusiomyces exhibit a striking dual nature, simultaneously acting as destructive postharvest pathogens, essential agents in dairy fermentation, and life-threatening opportunistic pathogens in immunocompromised hosts. Despite extensive domain-specific research, the mechanistic basis of this functional divergence remains poorly integrated across taxonomy, plant pathology, food microbiology, and clinical mycology. This review proposes a cross-domain framework that integrates taxonomic uncertainty, conserved molecular mechanisms, ecological plastici

Various plant species such as Opuntia stricta have developed defensive measures, namely, spines, thorns, and other sharp pointed structures to protect themselves from herbivores and other animals feeding on them. Opuntia stricta has invaded the northern part of Laikipia County, Kenya, and its fruits are protected by small spines called glochids. This study determined the pathology in goats feeding on this plant in Laikipia County. Eighteen goats that had eaten the plant and six others that were raised in a ranch without O. stricta were purchased for the study. All study animals were clinically

BACKGROUND: Sitosterolemia, an autosomal recessive condition, is characterized by impaired metabolism of plant sterols. Clinical symptoms include skin xanthoma, premature atherosclerotic disease, arthritis, and unexplained hematological abnormalities. However, there is a dearth of studies on sitosterolemia-related brain damage.
METHODS: This study focused on the family of two sitosterolemia patients who presented with severe hypercholesterolemia and xanthoma. Radiological examinations, biopsies, whole-exome sequencing (WES), and plant sterol tests were conducted.
RESULTS: The index patient,

Psoriasis is a noncontagious, autoimmune chronic inflammatory disease with an unknown root cause. It is classified as a multifactorial and chronic skin disorder that also affects the immune system and is genetic. Environmental factors such as stress, infections, and injuries all play an important role in the disease's development. Although there is no cure for this disease, topical, oral, and systemic whole-body treatments are available to relieve symptoms. Several plants and phytochemicals which have been found effective in the management of the psoriasis experimentally (preclinical and clini

In humans, aggregation of polyglutamine repeat (polyQ) proteins causes disorders such as Huntington's disease. Although plants express hundreds of polyQ-containing proteins, no pathologies arising from polyQ aggregation have been reported. To investigate this phenomenon, we expressed an aggregation-prone fragment of human huntingtin (HTT) with an expanded polyQ stretch (Q69) in Arabidopsis thaliana plants. In contrast to animal models, we find that Arabidopsis sp. suppresses Q69 aggregation through chloroplast proteostasis. Inhibition of chloroplast proteostasis diminishes the capacity of plan

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, affecting about seven to 10 million patients worldwide. The major pathological features of PD are loss of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway and accumulation of alpha-synuclein molecules, forming Lewy bodies. Until now, there is no effective cure for PD, and investigators are searching for neuroprotective strategies to stop or slow the disease progression. The MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) induced neurotoxicity of the nigrostriatal pathway has been used t
