Aerosol Impacts on Water Relations of Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora).

Major parts of anthropogenic and natural aerosols are hygroscopic and deliquesce at high humidity, particularly when depositing to leaf surfaces close to transpiring stomata. Deliquescence and subsequent salt creep may establish thin, extraordinary pathways into the stomata, which foster stomatal uptake of nutrients and water but may also cause stomatal liquid water loss by wicking. Such additional water loss is not accompanied by a wider stomatal aperture with a larger CO2 influx and hypothetically reduces water use efficiency (WUE). Here, the possible direct impacts of aerosols on physical a

Emergent feedforward and isohydric responses to soil and atmospheric aridity: insights from a time-dependent hydraulic model.

Drought and heat waves have synergistic effects on mortality as plants experience both supply and demand-side water stress. Which of these stresses ultimately controls stomatal conductance (gs) and whether patterns of regulation represent biological strategies or are imposed on the plant are addressed by way of a mechanistic hydraulic 'null' model. Dynamic losses of soil hydraulic conductivity are modeled in a soil domain fed by a maximum water flux from a deep-water source. A root-uptake plane extracts water from the soil in a two-node (root and leaf) plant model, with gs a function of leaf w

Fvchli deficiency impairs ABA-mediated stomatal closure and enhances susceptibility to Xanthomonas fragariae in strawberry.

The magnesium chelatase subunit CHLI is well-characterized in chlorophyll biosynthesis, but its role in plant immunity remains unclear. In this study, we generated chimeric Fvchli mutant strawberries via CRISPR/Cas9 and obtained T1-T3 progeny with a wide range of editing efficiencies through self-pollination. Mutants with higher editing efficiency exhibited more leaf spots. Following inoculation with Xanthomonas fragariae, Fvchli mutants showed increased susceptibility, with both lesion area and disease incidence positively correlating with editing efficiency. We further demonstrated that stom

Excessive leaf oil modulates the plant abiotic stress response via reduced stomatal aperture in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum).

High lipid producing (HLP) tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a potential biofuel crop that produces an excess of 30% dry weight as lipid bodies in the form of triacylglycerol. While using HLP tobacco as a sustainable fuel source is promising, it has not yet been tested for its tolerance to warmer environments that are expected in the near future as a result of climate change. We found that HLP tobacco had reduced stomatal conductance, which results in increased leaf temperatures up to 1.5°C higher under control and high temperature (38°C day/28°C night) conditions, reduced transpiration, and redu

Cytogenetic and anatomic behavior of cytochimeras and total polyploids in cassava.

Cassava periclinal cytochimeras, cultivars, and interspecific hybrid and polyploid types were studied in relation to embryonic, cytogenetic, and anatomical behavior. Their apical shoots, pollen grains, male and female buds, roots, stomata, and flowering period were analyzed. Chimeras exhibited increased size of L1 and L2 cells. Polyploidy led to enlargement of stomata in chimeras whereas L2 gave tetraploid chromosome configurations, tetrad irregularity, decrease of pollen viability, and increase in frequency of polyembryo sacs. The chimeric composition of tetraploids L1 and L2 and diploid L3 e

Responses of Wild and Cultivated Tetraploid Wheat to CO2 Enrichment: Stomatal Optimization of Photosynthesis and Water Use Efficiency.

The rising atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide will influence the anatomical and physiological traits that regulate photosynthesis and water use efficiency (WUE) in crops. To assess how domestication will shape responses to long-term [CO2] enrichment, we compared wild tetraploid wheat Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides and its cultivated derivative Triticum turgidum ssp. durum. Plants were grown under ambient (a[CO2]: ~420 μmol mol-1) and naturally elevated (e[CO2]: ~1000 μmol mol-1) [CO2] at the Bossoleto CO2-degassing vent in central Italy. Diurnal light fitness of the C3 and C4 species from the genus Atriplex under control and drought conditions.

The literature showed contradictory results regarding the acclimation of C3 and C4 photosynthesis to low light intensities. Atriplex halimus, A. nummularia (C4, NAD-ME), A. portulacoides and A. prostrata (C3) were exposed to three natural light intensities: full light (FL), medium light (ML) and low light (LL) under control or drought condition. Under control condition, in A. halimus and A. nummularia, photosynthetic rate (A) was proportionally linked to stomatal conductance (gs). In A. halimus, A and gs peaked at 9:00 and 12:00 at FL only. However, A and gs peaked at 9:00 and 12:00 under FL a

A Method to Quantify Relative Stomatal, Mesophyll, and Biochemical Limitations to C3 Leaf Photosynthesis in a Specific Growth Environment.

Determining relative limitations of stomatal, mesophyll, and biochemical components (ls, lm, and lb, respectively) to photosynthetic rate (A) can help understand leaf ecophysiology for specific growth conditions. The differential method has been widely applied to estimate the relative limitations in C3 plants, first for comparing two contrasting growth conditions, but also increasingly for a single condition. In addition to the common practical issue that estimating mesophyll conductance is sensitive to measurement noise, the method has a theoretical feature when applied to photosynthesis for

Leaf diffusional capacity largely contributes to the reduced photosynthesis in rice plants under magnesium deficiency.

Numerous studies have clarified the impacts of magnesium (Mg) on leaf photosynthesis from the perspectives of protein synthesis, enzymes activation and carbohydrate partitioning. However, it still remains largely unknown how stomatal and mesophyll conductances (gs and gm, respectively) are regulated by Mg. In the present study, leaf gas exchanges, leaf hydraulic parameters, leaf structural traits and cell wall composition were examined in rice plants grown under high and low Mg treatments to elucidate the impacts of Mg on gs and gm. Our results showed that reduction of leaf photosynthesis unde

Elevated CO2 reprograms carbon allocation and attenuates ABA sensitivity to balance photosynthesis and structural resilience in foxtail millet (Setaria italica).

Rising atmospheric CO2 profoundly influence plant physiology, yet integrated responses from molecular regulation to carbon allocation remain poorly characterized in C4 cereals. We employed an integrated physiological, biochemical, and metabolomic approach to investigate how e[CO2] (ambient +200 μmol mol-1) modulates carbon and nitrogen metabolism in leaves and stems of foxtail millet (Setaria italica). e[CO2] significantly increased net photosynthetic rate (+27.4%) and photosynthetic pigment contents. This enhanced carbon gain was accompanied by increased cuticular wax deposition (+27.1%) and

Maize Crops Face High Stomatal Uptake During High Exposure to Ozone in an Agroecosystem in the United States Corn Belt.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a phytotoxic air pollutant. The stomatal uptake of O3 is a substantial sink of O3, but it can create oxidative stress within plants, reducing photosynthesis and crop yields. In seasonally dry climates, stomatal regulation causes temporal decoupling between stomatal conductance and atmospheric O3 concentrations protecting vegetation from high stomatal uptake of O3 during peak ambient concentrations in the afternoon, but less is known about this temporal decoupling over agricultural fields in continental humid climates. Here, we investigate how maize (Zea mays L.) ecop

How does plasmalemma surface area accommodate alterations in guard cell volume during stomatal closing?

Cell fate determination factor dachshund1 (DACH1) is a chromosome-associated protein that regulates cellular differentiation throughout development. Recent genome-wide association studies have show that missense mutation in DACH1 leads to hereditary renal hypodysplasia. Renal DACH1 expression can be used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We firstly characterized the function of DACH1 in normal and diseased renal tissue using immunohistochemistry to assess DACH1 in human renal biopsy specimens from 40 immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) patients, 20 idiopathic membranous nephropath

Nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide in plants: which comes first?

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signal molecule regarded as being involved in myriad functions in plants under physiological, pathogenic, and adverse environmental conditions. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has also recently been recognized as a new gasotransmitter with a diverse range of functions similar to those of NO. Depending on their respective concentrations, both these molecules act synergistically or antagonistically as signals or damage promoters in plants. Nevertheless, available evidence shows that the complex biological connections between NO and H2S involve multiple pathways and depend on the pl

CO2 signalling in plants.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations increase the productivity of plants by enhancing the photosynthesis/photorespiration balance. It has long been recognized that CO2 acts as a signal, for example, in the regulation of stomatal closure, as well as the substrate of photosynthesis. Early concepts of CO2 signalling in plants focused on a mode of action based on alterations in primary metabolism, particularly sugar availability and signalling. However, stomatal guard cells employ a CO2 sensing and signalling mechanism that is independent of sugars. We discuss the possibility that a similar pat

Foliar abscisic acid content underlies genotypic variation in stomatal responsiveness after growth at high relative air humidity.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stomata formed at high relative air humidity (RH) respond less to abscisic acid (ABA), an effect that varies widely between cultivars. This study tested the hypotheses that this genotypic variation in stomatal responsiveness originates from differential impairment in intermediates of the ABA signalling pathway during closure and differences in leaf ABA concentration during growth. METHODS: Stomatal anatomical features and stomatal responsiveness to desiccation, feeding with ABA, three transduction elements of its signalling pathway (H2O2, NO, Ca(2+)) and elicitors of thes

Photosynthetic responses of Monarch birch seedlings to differing timings of free air ozone fumigation.

To study the effects of different periods of ozone (O3) fumigation on photosynthesis in leaves of the Monarch birch (Betula maximowicziana), we undertook free air O3 fumigation to Monarch birch seedlings at a concentration of 60 nmol mol(-1) during daytime. Plants were exposed to O3 at early, late or both periods in the growing season. The light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (A(sat)) in July and August was reduced by O3 exposure through a reduction in the maximum rate of carboxylation (V(c,max)). In early September, on the other hand, despite a reduction in V(c,max), A(sat) was not reduced

Identification and functional characterization of a cystathionine β-lyase (CBL) enzyme for H2S production in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Sulfide or sulfur metabolism plays an important role in the growth and development of plants. Cystathionine β-lyase (CBL) is an important enzyme in methionine synthesis, but a comprehensive understanding of CBL functions is limited. As the third gasotransmitter, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays important physiological roles in plants. In this study, we found that the endogenous H2S content in Arabidopsis thaliana cbl mutants was lower than that in the wild type. Under PEG-based osmotic stress conditions, the H2S contents of CBL-overexpression (OE-CBL) plants increased significantly compared with t

Effect of CO, NOx and SO2 on ROS production, photosynthesis and ascorbate-glutathione pathway to induce Fragaria×annasa as a hyperaccumulator.

A study was conducted to determine the effect of carbon monoxide (CO), nitroxide (NOx) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) on ROS production, photosynthesis and ascorbate-glutathione pathway in strawberry plants. The results showed that both singlet oxygen (O2(-1)) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content increased in CO, NOx and SO2 treated strawberry leaves. A drastic reduction of primary metabolism of plants (photosynthesis), with the closure of stomata, resulted in a reduction of protein, carbohydrate and sucrose content due to production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under prolonged exposure of gas s

Bewitching the host: Striga disrupts host stomatal ABA signaling by impairing the tryptophan lock.

Parasitic plants of the Orobanchaceae family, particularly Striga hermonthica, rank among the world's most devastating agricultural weeds (Jamil et al., 2021). They inflict massive yield losses on staple cereal crops across Africa, including sorghum, millet, and rice, as well as globally on other essential crops such as maize, rapeseed, tomato, and legumes (Parker et al., 2009; Bouwmeester, 2018). These root parasites have evolved a specialized organ called the 'haustorium' that connects to the vascular system of the host to siphon water, minerals, and nutrients (Yang et al., 2015).
