Seasonal Variation and Interspecies Dynamics Among Plasmodium falciparum and ovale Species in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control in sub-Saharan Africa is typically focused on Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), but non-falciparum species like P. ovale curtisi (Poc) and P. ovale wallikeri (Pow) appear to be rising in prevalence, especially in parts of East Africa. METHODS: We conducted polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based screening of 7173 asymptomatic individuals over 5 years of age in coastal Tanzania from 2018-2022, employing real-time 18S rRNA PCR assays for P. falciparum and P. ovale, followed by Poc/Pow detection. Plasmodium positivity was compared across seasons and demographic groups, and in

Immunogenicity and gene polymorphism analysis of Plasmodium ovale wallikeri glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored micronemal antigen (GAMA).

BACKGROUND: The glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored micronemal antigen (GAMA) protein is integral to the invasion of erythrocytes by Plasmodium species, with well-documented roles in the merozoite binding of both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. In the malaria endemic areas infections caused by Plasmodium ovale spp. can escalate to severe malaria, characterized by life-threatening anaemia. Nevertheless, P. ovale spp. have been frequently neglected in the study, and the species-specific P. ovale wallikeri (Pow) GAMA (PowGAMA) protein remains uncharacterized. This study investigates

Diagnosis and Molecular Analysis on Imported Plasmodium ovale curtisi and P. ovale wallikeri Malaria Cases from West and South Africa during 2013-2016.

Majority of the imported malaria cases in Korea is attributed to Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax infections, whereas P. malariae and P. ovale infections are very rare. Falciparum and ovale malaria are mostly imported from Africa, while most of the vivax malaria cases are imported from Southeast Asia. Here, we report 6 Korean imported ovale malaria cases (4 males and 2 females) who had visited in Africa during 2013-2016. These subjects were diagnosed with P. ovale based on microscopic findings, Plasmodium species-specific nested-PCR, and phylogenetic clade using 18S rRNA gene sequences. We i

A systematic review of the clinical presentation, treatment and relapse characteristics of human Plasmodium ovale malaria.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased efforts to control and ultimately eradicate human malaria, Plasmodium ovale malaria is for the most part outside the focus of research or public health programmes. Importantly, the understanding of P. ovale-nowadays regarded as the two distinct species P. ovale wallikeri and P. ovale curtisi-largely stems from case reports and case series lacking study designs providing high quality evidence. Consecutively, there is a lack of systematic evaluation of the clinical presentation, appropriate treatment and relapse characteristics of P. ovale malaria. The aim of this s

[A case of Plasmodium ovale malaria--morphological diagnostic difficulty and utility of rapid diagnostic tests].

A 46-year-old Japanese man was referred to our travel clinic because of high fever for the past 7 days. He worked as an engineer for a month in Zambia and returned to Japan 2 days ago. He had a high-grade fever of 40.5 degrees C. Examination of the palpebral conjunctiva showed no evidence of anemia. Liver and spleen were not palpable. Blood sample was collected at the time of the febrile paroxysm. Malaria parasites were detected by examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood films. The dominant feature of parasite was early trophozoit with a low parasitemia (0.0469%, 1,857.6/microL). The James' s

Large sequence heterogeneity of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of Plasmodium ovale in cambodia.

Plasmodium ovale malaria has been reported in various countries in southeast Asia, but never in Cambodia. Using a species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene, we detected P. ovale in nearly 4% of the inhabitants of a northeastern Cambodian village. Plasmodium ovale was associated with at least one other Plasmodium species, and two quadruple infections were detected. The diagnosis was confirmed by microscopy and by SSU rRNA PCR product sequencing. The sequences shared 96-99% identity with published sequences, and displayed a subst

[Plasmodium ovale malaria in France. Probability of of genetic control of the incubation period (author's transl)].

Plasmodium ovale as the causative parasite in attacks of malaria is rare. Nevertheless, the number of cases seen in France would seem to be on the increase. In 137 attacks of malaria collected between 1967 and 1978, Plasmodium ovale was found on 13 occasions. The main characteristics of this form of malaria are, apart from its benign nature, the usual absence of any recurrence and a very variable incubation period, ranging from fifteen days to several months or even a year (with an average of 3.2 months). It is thus important to bear this diagnosis in mind, even if a long period elapsed since

Severe Plasmodium ovale malaria complicated by acute respiratory distress syndrome in a young Caucasian man.

BACKGROUND: Although Plasmodium ovale is considered the cause of only mild malaria, a case of severe malaria due to P. ovale with acute respiratory distress syndrome is reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year old Caucasian man returning home from Angola was admitted for ovale malaria to the National Institute for Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome, Italy. Two days after initiation of oral chloroquine treatment, an acute respiratory distress syndrome was diagnosed through chest X-ray and chest CT scan with intravenous contrast. Intravenous artesunate and oral doxycycline were start

Molecular diagnosis and therapy for Plasmodium ovale infection of a returned traveler from East Africa.

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites that are mainly transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The average annual number of malaria cases was less than ten in Taiwan in the last five years. Most of the cases were caused by Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, and were primarily diagnosed in travelers who returned from Southeast Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of Plasmodium ovale infection within five years that was confirmed by peripheral blood smear examination and molecular identification in a 25-year-old Asian fe

The case report of a non-resident Indian with Plasmodium ovale curtisi from Kerala, India.

India's target of malaria elimination by 2030 may not be achieved solely by detecting Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, the two common Plasmodium species causing infections in humans. Sporadic reports have been documented on other Plasmodium species in the country, associated mostly with travel history. A febrile patient of Indian origin (Non-resident Indian (NRI)) was diagnosed with an infection of Plasmodium ovale curtisi malaria on his arrival from Sudan. A case report from Kerala was published in December 2020 and this is second report. Due to the inaccessibility of molecular techniques

Uneven Plasmodium falciparum Transmission and Cryptic ovale Transmission From the Asymptomatic Reservoir in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic malaria carriers often harbor low parasite densities missed by rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), yet they contribute to transmission. Direct skin feeding (DSF) assays can sensitively measure their infectiousness to mosquitoes. METHODS: To characterize human-to-mosquito transmission from the asymptomatic reservoir in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, DSFs were performed in persons >5 years of age positive for Plasmodium falciparum by RDT or real-time PCR. Fifty colony-reared Anopheles gambiae were fed on the posterior calves. Successful mosquito infection was defined as ≥1 oocyst-posit

Epidemiological profile of Plasmodium ovale spp. imported from Africa to Anhui Province, China, 2012-2019.

BACKGROUND: Although autochthonous malaria cases are no longer reported in Anhui Province, China, imported malaria has become a major health concern. The proportion of reported malaria cases caused by Plasmodium ovale spp. increased to levels higher than expected during 2012 to 2019, and showed two peaks, 19.69% in 2015 and 19.35% in 2018. METHODS: A case-based retrospective study was performed using data collected from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP) and Information System for Parasitic Disease Control and Prevention (ISPDCP) from 2012 to 2019 to asse

Acute respiratory distress syndrome and acute renal failure from Plasmodium ovale infection with fatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale is one of the causative agents of human malaria. Plasmodium ovale infection has long been thought to be non-fatal. Due to its lower morbidity, P. ovale receives little attention in malaria research. METHODS: Two Malaysians went to Nigeria for two weeks. After returning to Malaysia, they fell sick and were admitted to different hospitals. Plasmodium ovale parasites were identified from blood smears of these patients. The species identification was further confirmed with nested PCR. One of them was successfully treated with no incident of relapse within 12-month med

Plasmodium ovale infection in Sri Lanka: distant exposure and incidental detection of hyperparasitemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium ovale malaria, which was previously endemic to tropical Africa and the Southwest Pacific islands is now being reported from parts of Asia. In Sri Lanka, the indigenous transmission of malaria has not been documented since October 2012. Since then, there have been several imported cases of malaria, including P. ovale, which have been detected sporadically. The reporting case of P. ovale was imported and detected incidentally in 2021, with several atypical presentations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Sri Lankan medical doctor developed continuous fever with chills, rig

Limited Polymorphism of the Kelch Propeller Domain in Plasmodium malariae and P. ovale Isolates from Thailand.

Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum, the agent of severe malaria, is currently a major obstacle to malaria control in Southeast Asia. A gene named "kelch13" has been associated with artemisinin resistance in P. falciparum The orthologue of the kelch gene in P. vivax was identified and a small number of mutations were found in previous studies. The kelch orthologues in the other two human malaria parasites, P. malariae and P. ovale, have not yet been studied. Therefore, in this study, the orthologous kelch genes of P. malariae, P. ovale wallikeri, and P. ovale curtisi were isolated

Epidemiology of Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium ovale spp. in a highly malaria-endemic country: a longitudinal cohort study in Kinshasa Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Increasing reports suggest that non-falciparum species are an underappreciated cause of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa, but their epidemiology is not well-defined. This is particularly true in regions of high P. falciparum endemicity such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where 12% of the world's malaria cases and 13% of deaths occur. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The cumulative incidence and prevalence of P. malariae and P. ovale spp. infection detected by real-time PCR were estimated among children and adults within a longitudinal study conducted in seven rural, peri-urban, and
