Navigating pain and pleasure: trauma and alcohol use among urban women in India.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among women has been on the rise globally, with data showing a narrowing of the consumption gap between men and women. This has been notable in the urban settings of India as well. The current study explored the interplay of trauma and alcohol consumption amongst a cohort of urban Indian women. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 urban Indian heterosexual women, aged 18–55, diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The interviews, guided by the frameworks of ‘why’ and ‘when’ of alcohol use, adopted the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) lens t

Your misery is no longer my pleasure: Reduced schadenfreude in Huntington's disease families.

Schadenfreude - pleasure at others' misfortunes - has been systematically related to ventral striatum activity. This brain region is affected early in individuals with manifest and pre-manifest Huntington's disease (HD). However, the experience of schadenfreude has not yet been investigated in HD. In this study, 21 manifest HD patients, 19 first-degree asymptomatic relatives, and 23 healthy controls performed an experimental task designed to trigger schadenfreude, envy (another social emotion acting as an affective control condition), and control situations. Both HD patients and first-degree r

The associations of stress, pleasure and emotion to voice-hearing: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Negative emotions and stress are theorised to play a role in the onset and maintenance of voice-hearing experiences. However, previous research has not explored these temporal relationships in daily life using differentiated psychological constructs. AIM: Using ecological momentary assessment, this study examined the moment-to-moment relationships between negative and positive emotion valence and intensity, stressful and pleasurable events, and voice-hearing onset. MATERIALS & METHODS: Forty voice-hearers completed seven days of smartphone-based surveys, rating their emotions and

The Impact of Pleasure and Pain on Frequent Substance Use During Receptive Anal Intercourse.

Sexualized drug use (SDU) describes use of any psychoactive substance before or during planned sexual activity to facilitate, intensify, or prolong intercourse. The impact of pain, pleasure, and other mediators on SDU is not well characterized. This study aimed to distinguish the motivations behind different classes and frequencies of substance use during receptive anal intercourse (RAI). Data were from an internet-based survey conducted between July 2022-January 2023. We measured the frequency of SDU for five substances: poppers, alcohol, marijuana, methamphetamine, and nicotine. Satisfaction

An Unexpected Cause of Chest Pain While Self-Pleasuring: A Ripping Doom Excitement.

Acute aortic dissection (AD) involves the tearing of the aortic intima by shearing forces, resulting in a false lumen, which, depending on its location and extent, may lead to hemodynamic compromise, hypoperfusion of vital organs, or even rupture of the aorta. The classical presentation is a sudden chest or back pain described as sharp or ripping in quality. We present a 60-year-old male with a history of hypertension, Liddle's syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic cannabis use for insomnia who arrived at a non-PCI hospital complaining of severe retrosternal chest pain lasting several

Olfactory and gustatory disorders caused by COVID-19: How to regain the pleasure of eating?

BACKGROUND: Recently, anosmia and ageusia (and their variations) have been reported as frequent symptoms of COVID-19. Olfactory and gustatory stimuli are essential in the perception and pleasure of eating. Disorders in sensory perception may influence appetite and the intake of necessary nutrients when recovering from COVID-19. In this short commentary, taste and smell disorders were reported and correlated for the first time with food science. SCOPE AND APPROACH: The objective of this short commentary is to report that taste and smell disorders resulted from COVID-19 may impact eating pleasu

A "Different Economy of Bodies and Pleasures"?: Differentiating and Evaluating Sex and Sexual BDSM Experiences.

This study examines how BDSM participants understand sexual experiences. Data are drawn from 32 in-depth, semistructured interviews and discussion-board threads from a large BDSM community Web site. The analysis suggests that many BDSM participants perceive sexual BDSM experiences as not only significantly different from but also better than mainstream or "vanilla" sex. Three primary differentiation mechanisms are identified. First, BDSM participants constructed sex as requiring genital contact, while framing sexual BDSM as creating sexual fulfillment not requiring normative indicators of sexu

Pleasure, prophylaxis and procreation: a qualitative analysis of intermittent contraceptive use and unintended pregnancy.

CONTEXT: Although pregnancy ambivalence is consistently associated with poorer contraceptive use, little is known about the sexual, social and emotional dynamics at work in pregnancy ambivalence. METHODS: During in-depth sexual and reproductive history interviews conducted in 2003, 36 women and men were asked about the relational and emotional circumstances surrounding each pregnancy, as well as their thoughts about conceiving a baby with both current and previous partners. An ethnographic, inductive approach was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Half of respondents had experienced at least

Shared Pleasure in Early Mother-Infant Interactions Predicts Infant Attachment Security: A Brief Report.

Sharing emotions is a fundamental aspect of human interactions. Shared pleasure refers to moments where caregiver and infant engage in mutual smiling while making eye contact. This study examined shared pleasure in early mother-infant interactions as a predictor of infant attachment security. Associations between shared pleasure and maternal depressive symptoms were also investigated. The sample included 67 mother-infant dyads, of whom 22 mothers were diagnosed with postpartum depression. Shared pleasure was assessed through micro-coding of 3-min mother-infant interactions recorded in the labo

Personality correlates of revenge-seeking: Multidimensional links to physical aggression, impulsivity, and aggressive pleasure.

People differ in how much they seek retribution for interpersonal insults, slights, rejections, and other antagonistic actions. Identifying individuals who are most prone towards such revenge-seeking is a theoretically-informative and potentially violence-reducing endeavor. However, we have yet to understand the extent to which revenge-seeking individuals exhibit specific features of aggressiveness, impulsivity, and what motivates their hunt for retribution. Toward this end, we conducted three studies (total N = 673), in which revenge-seeking was measured alongside these other constructs. Anal

Social interaction enhances the pleasurable urge to move to music in people with Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundMusic- and dance-based interventions can improve motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), but two key questions remain: whether the rhythmic complexity of music influences intervention outcomes, and whether social interaction further enhances these effects.ObjectivesTo examine the effects of rhythmic complexity and interpersonal synchronization on subjective and objective movement responses to music in PD.MethodParticipants tapped to the beat of music with varying levels of rhythmic complexity across three cueing conditions: music alone, music with a visual beat cue, a

Vaginal practices in the creation of womanhood and women's attainment of sexual pleasure in rural Zimbabwe.

The construction of womanhood and perceptions of sexual pleasure are among the many reasons women worldwide engage in vaginal practices. This article contends that some women engage in these practices to create an ideal state of the vagina and the body so as to enable them to achieve optimal womanhood and experience sexual pleasure. It draws on data from a qualitative ethnographic study that examined the use of vaginal practices by women in Tshitatshawa village in the Tsholotsho district in Zimbabwe which explored common vaginal practices in that setting. Vaginal practices have a catalytic rol

Pleasure, womanhood and the desire for reconstructive surgery after female genital cutting in Belgium.

Growing numbers of women are showing interest in clitoral reconstructive surgery after 'Female Genital Mutilation'. The safety and success of reconstructive surgery, however, has not clearly been established and due to lack of evidence the World Health Organization does not recommend it. Based on anthropological research among patients who requested surgery at the Brussels specialist clinic between 2017 and 2020, this paper looks at two cases of women who actually enjoy sex and experience pleasure but request the procedure to become 'whole again' after stigmatising experiences with health-care

Lifestyle use of drugs by healthy people for enhancing cognition, creativity, motivation and pleasure.

Today, there is continued, and in some cases growing, availability of not only psychoactive substances, including treatments for mental health disorders such as cognitive enhancers, which can enhance or restore brain function, but also 'recreational' drugs such as novel psychoactive substances (NPS). The use of psychoactive drugs has both benefits and risks: whilst new drugs to treat cognitive symptoms in neuropsychiatric or neurodegenerative disorders could have great benefits for many patient groups, the increasing ease of accessibility to recreational NPS and the increasing lifestyle use of

Dissociating the role of endocannabinoids in the pleasurable and motivational properties of social play behaviour in rats.

Social play behaviour is a vigorous form of social interaction, abundant during the juvenile and adolescent phases of life in many mammalian species, including humans. Social play is highly rewarding and it is important for social and cognitive development. Being a rewarding activity, social play can be dissociated in its pleasurable and motivational components. We have previously shown that endocannabinoids modulate the expression of social play behaviour in rats. In the present study, we investigated whether endocannabinoids modulate the motivational and pleasurable properties of social play
