Pulmonary epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (PEH) is a rare vascular neoplasm. The thoracic manifestation of this disorder is identified via three major imaging patterns, namely multiple primary nodules, diffuse infiltrative pleural thickening, and multiple pulmonary reticulonodular opacities. The commonest pattern of presentation is bilateral multiple nodules. Diagnosis is based on histopathological findings and verified by positive immunochemistry staining. Patients with PEH are usually asymptomatic. We report the case of a 51-year-old female who presented to our facility with a five-month h

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Malignant pleural effusions occur in the setting of both solid and hematologic malignancies. Pleural effusion caused by leukemic infiltration is an unusual extramedullary manifestation of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with fewer than 20 cases reported (1-11). We report a case of pericardial and pleural effusions in a patient with AML and review the literature.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: In this case, a 55-year-old man with previous history of myeloproliferative neoplasm experienced transformation AML, heralded by appearance of leukemic pleural effusions. The patient was i

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic complexities that arise in radiographic distinction between ectopic pleural thymoma and other thoracic neoplasms are substantial, with instances of co-occurring T-cell lymphocytosis and osseous metastasis being exceedingly rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with dyspnea and chest pain. Upon imaging examination, she was found to have diffuse and nodular pleural thickening on the left side, collapse of the left lung and a compression in the second thoracic vertebrae. All lesions showed significant 18F-FDG uptake on 18F-FDG PET/CT

Lipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms that arise from adipocytes. Most lipomas are found in the subcutaneous tissue; however, they can be present throughout the body. Lipomas arising from the thoracic pleura are exceptionally rare, with only approximately 20 cases ever reported in the literature. While typically asymptomatic, pleural lipomas may cause compressive symptoms such as nonproductive cough, chest pain, and dyspnea if they reach adequate size. A CT scan is usually sufficient for the diagnosis and typically reveals well-defined nodules with homogenous fat attenuation of approximatel

Pleural effusion may occur as a rare complication associated with myeloid hematological malignancies. However, it occasionally occurs in patients with myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative neoplasms(MDS/MPN), especially in chronic myelomonocytic leukemia(CMML)with marked leukocytosis. Pleural effusion can also develop in hematological disorders with bone marrow fibrosis. Here, we report a case of CMML with bone marrow fibrosis, in which massive pleural effusion developed rapidly during cytoreductive therapy with hydroxycarbamide(HU). At the same time, the patient's leukocytosis was well controlle

Pleural and pulmonary malignancies are usually associated with previous asbestos exposure and the presence of simian virus 40 (SV40) has been detected in these neoplasms. Our study aimed to investigate the health situation among mechanics servicing buses, ex-exposed to asbestos, who received polio vaccines contaminated by SV 40. We conducted a descriptive study and so we recruited, on the basis of birth date and duration in the current job, 39 mechanics, born since 1950 until 1965, with length of service above 15 years. Of all subjects a clinical examination, a lung function test and a chest r

We sought to determine whether measuring antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and their specificities [dsDNA, extractable nuclear antigens (ENA)] on pleural fluid may contribute to the differential diagnosis of pleural effusions. ANA were tested by indirect immunofluorescence on Hep-2 cells in the pleural fluid of 266 patients with effusions of different etiologies, including 15 lupus pleuritis. The cutoff value for diagnostic use was set at 1:160. Pleural fluid analysis of specific autoantibodies, such as anti-dsDNA and anti-ENA, was also performed if a positive ANA test was obtained. All patients wi

The pleura is a thin, smooth, soft-tissue structure that lines the pleural cavity and separates the lungs from the chest wall, consisting of the visceral and parietal pleurae and physiologic pleural fluid. There is a broad spectrum of normal variations and abnormalities in the pleura, including pneumothorax, pleural effusion, and pleural thickening. Pneumothorax is associated with pulmonary diseases and is caused by iatrogenic or traumatic factors. Chest radiography and US help detect pneumothorax with various signs, and CT can also help assess the causes. Pleural effusion occurs in a wide spe

CT scans of 47 patients who had peripheral bronchogenic carcinoma contiguous to the pleural surface and who had undergone thoracotomy were retrospectively reviewed. The CT features of the primary neoplasm that were analyzed included the angle and amount of contact with the adjacent pleural surface, associated pleural thickening, fat plane between the tumor and chest wall, rib destruction, and chest wall mass. CT was of limited predictive value in separating those patients who had parietal pleural/chest wall involvement from those who did not. The combination of two or three CT findings (obtuse

Thymoma is the most common neoplasm originating in the anterior mediastinum and accounts for a quarter of all mediastinal tumors. A pericardial effusion is an uncommon initial manifestation present in approximately 20% of patients. However, our patient had hemorrhagic pericardial effusions causing a cardiac tamponade with bilateral pleural effusions, nodular left pleural based masses, and ascites. In this report, we describe the unique features of our case and its management.

Two cats had chronic respiratory signs associated with pulmonary carcinoma. In each case, computed tomography demonstrated similar pulmonary masses, pleural fluid and osteolytic expansile rib lesions as a result of local costal spread. This is the first report of feline primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma with local spread to the ribs, causing osteolysis. Although pleural involvement is common with this neoplasm, local spread to ribs is rarely reported.

Metastatic deposits are the most common cause of pleural masses, solitary or multiple. Primary pleural neoplasms are rare entities that are occasionally encountered. Of these, the tumors of neurogenic origin are exceedingly rare with only a few cases reported in the literature. We describe a case of an isolated neurofibroma involving the pleura in a 23-year-old male patient, who underwent CT and MRI scans of the thorax as part of the initial investigations. The final diagnosis was clinched by a CT-guided biopsy of the lesion.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients who develop infections of the pleura have several risk factors for malignancies, particularly lung cancer, and the infections might even be caused by undiagnosed intra-thoracic neoplasms. The aim of the study was to compare the occurrence of lung cancer and other malignancies between patients treated for pleural infections and controls during long-term follow-up.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive patients treated for pleural infections between January 2000 and June 2016 at the Tampere University Hospital were included. Ten matched controls and data regarding

This case report describes an elderly man with a history of alcohol use disorder and primary malignant liver neoplasm who presented to the emergency department with dyspnea, asthenia, fever, and signs of respiratory distress. Diagnostic tests, including a chest radiograph and computed tomography, revealed a large left-sided exudative pleural effusion with regular and diffuse pleural enhancement, a large tumor lesion in the left lobe with diaphragmatic and pleural invasion, and a liver with features suggestive of cirrhosis. Laboratory data showed increased inflammatory markers and hyperlactacid

GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumors are exceptionally rare mesenchymal tumors, with recent molecular studies implicating GLI1 gene fusion or amplification. We report a 39-year-old nonsmoking woman who presented with an incidentally detected right pleural-based mass. Cross-sectional imaging identified a paraspinal pleural lesion at the T5-T6 level without intraspinal extension. Video-assisted thoracoscopic resection revealed a biphasic tumor and next-generation sequencing confirmed an ACTB-GLI1 fusion. The diagnosis of GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumor was established. After multidisciplinary discussi

Solitary fibrous tumors are well described in the pleura, but rare extra-pleural neoplasms have been reported. We describe a patient with a solitary left renal fibrous tumor who after undergoing a nephrectomy, presented 8 years later with a contralateral metachronous solitary fibrous tumor. Malignant metastatic extra-pleural solitary fibrous tumors are extremely rare, and to our knowledge, this is the first case of contralateral recurrence of solitary renal fibrous tumor. The patient underwent a robotic assisted partial nephrectomy of the right renal mass. Both tumors showed overlapping histop

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant soft-tissue neoplasm of unknown histogenesis. The two main sites of occurrence are the lower extremities in adults and the head and neck in children. We report the first case of pleural ASPS occurring in a 58-yr-old man who presented with progressive dyspnea. A computed tomographic scan of the thorax revealed a large enhancing pleural mass with pleural effusion in the left hemithorax. Wide excision of the pleural mass was performed. Histologically, the tumor consisted of organoid nests of large polygonal cells, the cytoplasm of which had eo

Accumulation of Tc-99m labeled phosphonate bone scanning agent in a pleural effusion usually shows a mild and diffuse increase in radioactivity of the involved thorax. A malignant neoplasm was thought to account for this accumulation. The photon deficiency of the hemithorax on Tc-99m HMDP bone scintigraphy was shown in a case of massive pleural effusion, which was proved by autopsy to be due to metastatic breast carcinoma in the pleura. Two factors caused these scintigraphic findings: 1) a large amount of fluid in the pleural cavity caused photon attenuation; 2) the higher body background in t

Chordoma is a rare and slow-growing malignant neoplasm that arises from the embryonic notochord. It is rare to see a thoracic chordoma presenting as a posterior mediastinal mass with pleural seeding in a child. The authors report a chordoma of the thoracic spine with posterior mediastinal extension and pleural seeding in a 2-year-old boy who presented with asymmetric bilateral hand temperature and lower limb paralysis. The clinical course progressed rapidly, resulting in death.

In order to discriminate between malignant and benign effusions, the values of tissue polypeptide specific antigen, carcinoembryonic antigen and squamous cell carcinoma associated antigen were measured in the pleural fluid of 30 patients with neoplasm, 10 with tuberculous pleurisy, 10 with transudates due to congestive heart failure or cirrhosis, 29 with parapneumonic effusions and 23 with benign diseases other than tuberculosis and pneumonia. Carcinoembryonic antigen and tissue poly-peptide specific antigen levels in effusions due to neoplasms were significantly higher than those in effusions
