Pneumatosis remains a rare condition presenting with multiple gas filled cysts at various parts of the GIT. It islmost always a secondary finding in a already active disease. It is very usual for it to be found occasionally at a routine examination. In the following study we present a case of intestinal pneumatosis in a 49-year-old female patient who underwent routine surgery for gastric dilatation as a complication of a chronic peptic ulcer. After exploration of the abdominal cavity, a polycystic tumor formation was found at the terminal ileum. It was further resected and sent for pathohystol

A 67-year-old female with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) was admitted to a hospital because of sudden onset of mid-abdominal pain. Laboratory data only showed mild elevation of white blood cell counts. She was diagnosed as constipation, and given laxative and enema. However, 9 h after the admission, her blood pressure suddenly went down with developing of metabolic acidosis, and died 20 h after the admission. Forensic autopsy revealed massive pneumohemia in the venous system. Edematous dark-brown colored lesions of mucosal surface were discontinuously observed from terminal ileum to sigmo

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of gas-filled cysts in the submucosa or subserosa of gastrointestinal tract. PCI has been widely recognized as a late manifestation of systemic sclerosis but seldom reported to take place in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We reported here a 13-year-old female who had been diagnosed to have SLE based on the following findings; malar rash, discoid erythema, proteinuria, positive antinuclear antibody and anti-DNA antibody. She had been treated with various immunosuppressive drugs includin

A case of malrotation of the mid intestine with volvulus is reported in an infant in whom the clinical and radiological appearances were unusual, and had led to a misdiagnosis of necrotising enterocolitis. If the correct diagnosis had been made earlier, operation might have saved the infant's life.

Two cases of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis of the descending colon are described in which the presenting symptoms were abdominal pain and changed bowel habits, respectively. The diagnosis in both cases was established radiologically and sigmoidoscopically. Because the symptoms were persistent and severe, surgical excision of the involved segment of the large bowel was performed. The postoperative result was good and both patients remain free of symptoms.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare manifestation of pneumatosis intestinalis (PI), characterized by intramural gas cysts within the gastrointestinal tract. While frequently benign and many times idiopathic, PCI can also be associated with underlying critical conditions. Radiographically, benign cases of PCI can mimic life-threatening abdominal pathology, creating diagnostic uncertainty and challenging operative decision-making. We report a case of a 71-year-old male with a three-year history of progressive abdominal bloating, early satiety, postprandial pain and significant wei

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is characterized by gas-filled cysts in the intestinal submucosa and subserosa. There are few reports of PCI occurring in duodenum and rectum. Here we demonstrated four different endoscopic manifestations of PCI and three cases with intestinal stricture all were successfully managed by medical conservative treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: There are 6 cases of PCI with varied causes encountered, in which the etiology, endoscopic features, treatment methods and prognosis of patients were studied. One case was idiopathic, while the other one case

Here we report a case of systemic sclerosis (SSc) complicated with pneumoperitoneum and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI). A 58-year-old woman who had been treated with oxygen therapy for chronic respiratory failure caused by interstitial pneumonia was admitted to Tokyo Metropolitan Ohtsuka Hospital because of abdominal fullness. On admission, laboratory data showed accelerated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, mild anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and elevated level of lactose dehydrogenase (LDH). Anti-nuclear antibodies, anti-RNP antibodies, anti-Topoisomerase I antibodies, anti-Ku antibodies,

A rare association of pneumoperitoneum induced by pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with chronic mesenteroaxial volvulus of an irreducible stomach in a paraesophageal hiatus hernia is described. The importance of accurate radiologic work-up is emphasized. The possible significance of this association to explain the pathogenesis of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is discussed.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is generally benign in course and sometimes, if cysts ruptured, behave as the not uncommon cause of free air in acute abdomen. In our case, we illustrate ruptured isolated cysts of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis are responsible for pneumoperitoneum in a 94-year-old male patient. Laparotomy with gastrotomy for decompression of intraluminal aeropressure was performed, with an uneventful recovery. This paper presents with preoperative and intraoperative images of high educational value for this, often underdiagnosed, clinical entity.

CONTEXT: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a condition with multiple gas-filled cysts within the bowel wall, associated with diverse background diseases. Its pathogenesis is still a mystery. Some previous observations scattered in the literature have suggested an association of the cystic spaces in PCI with the lymphatics.
OBJECTIVE: To further investigate whether PCI results from the ballooning of gas-filled lymphatic channels.
DESIGN: We did immunostaining of podoplanin, a mucoprotein preferentially expressed in lymphatic endothelial cells, in 13 cases (8 men, 5 women; age range,

A 48-yr-old man was admitted to our hospital with abdominal discomfort and distension. A barium enema showed multiple radiolucent filling defects in the wall of the ascending colon. Colonic endoscopy revealed numerous round, polypoid masses covered with normal mucosa. These findings suggested Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Target air-enema computed tomography was performed to make a final diagnosis, and demonstrated several gas collections covered with soft tissue in the wall of the ascending colon. This is the first reported case of Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in which multiple ga

A 34-year-old man with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) developed pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis associated with an intestinal infection with Cryptosporidium organisms. The pneumatosis resolved upon treatment of the cryptosporidiosis with paromomycin and clofazimine. Four other cases of benign pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in adults with AIDS and associated cryptosporidiosis have been reported, which suggests that cryptosporidial infection may be pathogenetically involved in the pneumatosis and not merely incidental.

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts within the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to variable clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges. A bronchoperitoneal fistula is an exceedingly rare complication, typically resulting from downward gas tracking secondary to thoracic pathology.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 76-year-old female with a remote history of hiatal hernia repair who developed chronic gastrointestinal symptoms associated with pneumoperitoneum and PCI, complic

RATIONALE: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon complaint that can produce free gas below the diaphragm, mimicking gastrointestinal perforation, which can easily lead to misdiagnosis. Although prognosis is generally good in most cases, complications can pose a threat to life and may require surgical intervention. Currently, clear surgical guidelines for PCI complicated by colonic perforation are lacking.
PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: We present the case of a 57-year-old male patient with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis complicated by colonic perforation. The patient wa

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) in adult dermatomyositis (DM) is rarely described. This report aimed to describe the clinical features and prognosis of PCI in six adult patients with DM (four with anti-MDA5 antibodies, one with anti-SAE antibodies, and one with anti-TIF-1γ antibodies). Except for one patient with transient abdominal pain, the remaining five patients were asymptomatic. PCI occurred in the ascending colon in all patients, of whom five had free gas in the abdominal cavity. No patients received excessive treatment, and PCI disappeared in four patients during the follow-up
