Moleskin is a commonly used material in podiatry and sports medicine for blister prevention and treatment. Common understanding regarding its protective mechanism is reduction of friction at the interface between the foot and the sock/shoe. We argue that moleskin may actually increase friction at this interface, but nonetheless prevents blisters by dispersing shear load within the skin across a wider surface area, reducing potential for skin damage.

Optimal care of peripheral arterial disease and chronic limb threatening ischemia hinges upon multispecialty collaboration. A comprehensive team should include vascular specialists, Primary Care Providers (PCPs), podiatry/orthopedics, plastic surgery, infectious disease, endocrinology, social work and rehabilitation professionals, among others. Special attention should be paid to the unique considerations of underrepresented patient populations, such as minorities and geriatric patients, in managing their associated risks.

BACKGROUND: Hallux valgus (HV) is a common, progressive foot deformity associated with pain, functional limitation, and reduced quality of life. Patients are frequently referred for orthopaedic consultation contributing to prolonged waitlists. This study explored patient experiences, perceptions, and expectations of HV management while awaiting orthopaedic review.
METHODS: A convergent mixed-methods design was used involving patients on orthopaedic waitlists at Canberra Health Services and Northern Health, Australia. Participants completed a survey assessing demographics, HV severity, health-

BACKGROUND: From March-May 2013, 3 cases of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection were diagnosed among elderly patients residing at the same skilled nursing facility (facility A) and who received health care at hospital X during their likely exposure period.
METHODS: We performed HCV testing of at-risk populations; quasispecies analysis was performed to determine relatedness of HCV in persons with current infection. Infection control practice assessments were conducted at facility A and hospital X. Persons residing in facility A on September 9, 2013, were enrolled in a case-control study to

Helcococcus kunzii has previously been considered to belong to the normal skin flora of podiatry patients. Here, H. kunzii was isolated in abundance from a pus specimen collected by incision and drainage of plantar phlegmon. This fastidious Gram-positive species was unambiguously identified with the colorimetric VITEK 2 GP card identification system. This suggests that this phenotypic identification system is able to identify promptly H. kunzii, which should be considered a potential pathogen.

The Smith design subtalar joint arthroeresis has been performed at The Podiatry Hospital of Pittsburgh since 1982 for the surgical correction of hypermobile flatfeet in children. The authors review the historical background of the procedure with emphasis on surgical procedure, indications, and complications. The results of a 7-year retrospective study of over 40 cases revealed a 95% success rate with limited complications. Some interesting radiographic changes in the talus and calcaneus are described.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of surgical debridement on the microbiology of resection margins of an infected diabetic foot ulcer and to compare the use of marginal sampling as a guide for antimicrobial therapy.
METHODS: Forty consecutive participants were studied. Tissue samples from infected diabetic foot ulcers were obtained at first contact by podiatrists. After surgical debridement to macroscopically healthy tissue, multiple samples were obtained from the margins of the residuum and also from excised non-viable tissue. Debridement was done by a single surgeon. Bacterial species were classi

BACKGROUND: There is no 'gold-standard' for the evaluation of dexterity for the health professional or podiatrist populations. This has resulted in a broad array of generalised tests to evaluate dexterity. Thus, the aim was to determine which objective generalised dexterity tests are best suited to evaluating dexterity in a podiatry student population.
METHODS: A cohort of Novice podiatry students and Experienced podiatrists were recruited and evaluated on a battery of dexterity tests selected to evaluate a variety of different elements. Group differences were evaluated statistically and regr

Foot management and hoof care of foals, weanlings, and yearlings tends to be considered a specialist job. Many farriers and veterinary surgeons have little exposure to young and growing stock. Nevertheless, a variety of angular and flexural limb deformities can benefit from simple podiatry techniques, which can be performed provided that a few basic rules are followed. The combined skills of the farrier and veterinary surgeon offer many young horses with angular or flexural limb deformities a chance of a future athletic career.

Four procedures are presented to correct hallux abducto valgus and metatarsus primus adductus in the child between the ages of 3 and 7 years. A new procedure is introduced: a subtalar extra-articular lateral arthroereisis, and an erasure procedure of the epiphysis is discussed. An important new concept in pediatric podiatry is introduced: it is often possible to prevent major surgery in the adult by performing a minor procedure in the young child. Finally, a Reverdin's procedure to correct the articular set angle in adults is presented.

BACKGROUND: Debridement of toenails is a common procedure that leads to the production of nail dust aerosols in the work environment. Previous studies indicate that inhaled nail dust can cause respiratory distress and eye irritation. This comprehensive review aimed to assess the available literature on the effect of nail dust exposure and to evaluate nail dust as a potential occupational hazard for podiatric physicians.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted via PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Risks of bias of the collected studies w

Reported here is the case of a 55-year-old woman presenting to a podiatry clinic with a chief complaint of left heel and ankle pain, who ultimately underwent operative excision of an angioleiomyoma adjacent to the tibialis posterior artery at the level of the medial malleolus. Accompanying this case are images from three modalities through which the defining characteristics of an angioleiomyoma can be appreciated. This case advocates for the inclusion of angioleiomyoma in the preoperative differential diagnosis of a mass presenting as a pseudoaneurysm in the lower extremity, particularly among

Lower extremity amputation secondary to diabetes and/or peripheral artery disease is a significant health issue globally. Many amputation prevention programs exist in academic settings; however, given the increasing administrative burdens associated with large institutions, it can be challenging to develop and maintain such programs in the modern era. Private amputation prevention clinics may be a viable alternative, allowing for greater control over services provided and better ability to meet patient needs. PURPOSE: Diabetes education for those patients at risk of diabetes complications remains a mainstay of diabetes treatment. This study aimed primarily to determine the retention of foot health information 6 months post delivery of education. The secondary aim was to determine the type and delivery method of diabetes-specific foot health information during a podiatry consultation.
METHODS: This study was a prospective cohort study with two groups: patients with diabetes and their treating podiatrist. Baseline data collection included educational topics and delivery methods discussed during the

OBJECTIVES: Measuring patient health outcomes is important for effective healthcare. Community-based allied health care provides services for people with complex and often deteriorating conditions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if a single outcome measure was applicable across a multidisciplinary team of eight allied health professions to measure the impact of the team. The chosen measure was the EuroQoL, 5-dimension, 5-level (EQ-5D-5L) which we compared to changes in discipline specific functional and quality of life measures.
METHODS: Any adult attending community-based services
