Self-treatment of female external genital warts with 0.5% podophyllotoxin cream (Condyline) vs weekly applications of 20% podophyllin solution.

Sixty women with genital warts were randomly allocated to treatment with either weekly application of 20% podophyllin solution or self-treatment with 0.5% podophyllotoxin cream twice daily for three days in weekly intervals. After a maximum of 4 treatment cycles a final assessment was carried out after 3 months. Primary clearance after termination of treatment was 82% for podophyllotoxin and 59% for podophyllin solution. After excluding relapses at the 3-month follow-up, final clearance for podophyllotoxin (71%) was significantly better (P < 0.05) than that for podophyllin solution (48%). The

[Surgically treated supratentorial gliomas in the adult. Favourable action of a podophyllin derivative (VM 26) administered alone (author's transl)].

The action of VM 26 on cerebral glioblastomas was suggested by studies of phase II or protocols in which the drug was used in association. The randomised protocol presented here, involving 10 treated subjects and 11 controls, showed that VM 26 was active in terms of the duration of survival of patients undergoing surgery for a glioblastoma. The mean survival was 16.4 months as against 9.6 months in the controls (statistically significant difference at p less than 0.05). This activity would tend to characterise the drug as one of the essential factors in the chemotherapy of all malignant glioma

Efficacy of Intralesional Candida Antigen Versus Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Vaccine Versus Topical Podophyllin in Treatment of Resistant Genital Warts.

BACKGROUND: No single treatment is ideal for genital warts with high rate of resistance using conventional modalities as topical podophyllin; however, several intralesional immunotherapies are being tested nowadays, with variable results. In this study, we compared the safety and efficacy of treating resistant and recurrent genital warts by 2 intralesional immunotherapies [Candida antigen and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine] and compared them with topical podophyllin. PATIENTS/METHODS: A total of 45 patients with resistant or recurrent genital warts were enrolled in this study. Size

Intralesional bivalent human papilloma virus vaccine as a treatment for anogenital warts versus topical podophyllin resin 25%: A pilot study.

A role of human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines as a therapy for genital warts was suggested, nevertheless; it has not been established in clinical trials and has yet to be determined. The objective of this study is to evaluate a potential benefit of intralesional injection of bivalent HPV (Cervarix) vaccine as a treatment for anogenital warts versus topical podophyllin resin 25%. Forty-four patients with anogenital warts were included in the study, 22 patients received intralesional Cervarix every 2 weeks until clearance of lesions or for a maximum of five sessions. The other 22 patients recei

Combined treatment of anogenital HPV infection with cryodestruction, podophyllin 25% and post-ablation immunomodulation with sinecatechins 15% ointment - a retrospective analysis.

External genital warts, caused by human papillomavirus, have a significant clinical, epidemiological, and financial impact, including the risk for malignant transformation. Treatment modalities include: (a) destructive (ablative); (b) cytotoxic (proapoptotic) and (c) immunomodulatory, with success and recurrence rates varying from 23% to 94% and from 4.1% to 77%, respectively. Most studies evaluated only single modality therapy, with few reports examining a combined approach for external genital warts management. The introduction of sinecatechins ointment in recent years has resulted in very l

Detection with the polymerase chain reaction of human papillomavirus DNA in condylomata acuminata treated in vitro with liquid nitrogen, trichloroacetic acid, and podophyllin.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of action for local treatments used against condylomata acuminata are unknown, but most are believed to cause physical destruction of infected tissue. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to determine whether liquid nitrogen, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and podophyllin damage HPV DNA found in condylomata acuminata. METHODS: Fourteen genital warts were excised from 14 patients and divided. One part was treated with liquid nitrogen, the second and third parts were treated with TCA and podophyllin, respectively, and the remainder served as a control. DNA was then extracted from

Cantharidin-Podophyllin-Salicylic Acid Formulation as a First-Line Treatment for Plantar Warts? A Case Report with Multiple Plantar Warts of Human Papillomavirus Biotype 27 and Previous Failed Treatments.

BACKGROUND Plantar warts are benign skin tumors caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). There are multiple treatments, but none ensure absolute success. Successful treatment depends on several factors, such as the location, number of lesions, HPV biotype, and the patient's health condition. This report presents a 53-year-old woman who had multiple recalcitrant plantar warts with HPV biotype 27 that were treated using a cantharidin-podophyllin-salicylic acid (CPS) formulation after 2 failed treatments. CASE REPORT A 53-year-old woman was seen on October 25, 2021. She had 6 plantar warts due t

A cross-sectional survey of treatment choices for anogenital warts.

This was a cross-sectional survey that collected data relating to management of anogenital warts (AGW) during a single-patient visit only at genitourinary medicine clinics. Single-agent use of cryotherapy, podophyllotoxin and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) were the most common treatment modalities, accounting for over two-thirds of all modalities used. Podophyllin, alone or in combination with other agents, was used for about 20% of first-line treatments. Podophyllin was included in about 15% of all treatment modalities. Guidelines for the management of AGW continue to recommend the use of podophy

Pseudobowenoid change of the vulva: a histologic variant of untreated condylata acuminatum.

Vulvar condylomata are distinguished from vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia by orderly maturation, a low mitotic index, and the absence of nuclear atypia in the lower epithelial layers. Podophyllin therapy might produce changes in condylomata mimicking vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia but can be distinguished, particularly with a recent history of podophyllin use. This report describes five patients with vulvar condylomata that morphologically resemble both podophyllin effect and vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia. The mean age was 30.5 years. All lesions exhibited superficial keratinocytes in va

Critical review of topical management of oral hairy leukoplakia.

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) is a disease associated with Epstein-Barr virus and human immunodeficiency virus infections. OHL is usually an asymptomatic lesion, but in some cases treatment is recommended to reestablish the normal characteristics of the tongue, to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms, to improve patient comfort and for cosmetic reasons. Proposed treatments for this condition include surgery, systemic antiviral treatment and topical management. Topical treatment is an inexpensive and safe therapy that is easy to apply, noninvasive, free of systemic adverse effects and effective o
