Estimated cost-effectiveness of point-of-care testing in community pharmacies vs. self-testing and standard laboratory testing for HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Point-of-care-testing (POCT) for HIV at community pharmacies can enhance care linkage compared with self-tests and increase testing uptake relative to standard lab testing. While the higher test uptake may increase testing costs, timely diagnosis and treatment can reduce downstream HIV treatment costs and improve health outcomes. This study provides the first evidence on the cost-effectiveness of pharmacist-led POCT vs. HIV self-testing and standard lab testing. DESIGN: Dynamic transmission model. METHODS: We compared three HIV testing strategies: POCT at community pharmacies; sel

Prospective evaluation of GFAP point-of-care testing for rapid diagnosis of glioblastoma.

PURPOSE: Glioblastoma is the most common and the most aggressive malignant primary brain tumor. The diagnosis is made by histopathological analysis following stereotactic biopsy or tumor resection. However, rapid diagnostic clarity is often required before histology becomes available. Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) has been studied as a blood biomarker for glioblastoma using conventional immunoassays. The aim of this study was to test the diagnostic value of a GFAP point-of-care device to differentiate glioblastoma from other brain tumors. METHODS: Patients admitted to our hospital wit

Validation of Point-of-Care Glucose Testing for Diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

Point-of-care (POC) glucose technology is currently considered to be insufficiently accurate for the diagnosis of diabetes. The objective of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of an innovative, interference-resistant POC glucose meter (StatStrip glucose hospital meter, Nova Biomedical, USA) in subjects with a previous history of dysglycaemia, undergoing a 75 g diagnostic oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT). Venous and capillary blood sampling for the reference laboratory procedure (RLP) and POC-glucose measurement was carried out at fasting and 2 h oGTT, and categories of glu

A field-deployable microfluidic platform for point-of-care testing of aquaculture biosecurity.

Infectious diseases persistently threaten aquaculture, particularly in shrimp farming, which urgently requires deployable diagnostic technologies for biosecurity management. However, current methods are limited by complex sample matrices, reliance on centralized laboratories, and delayed data feedback, making them unsuitable for on-site detection in decentralized settings. Here, we reported a deployable platform utilizing injection molded SlipChip microfluidic device that performs automated nucleic acid testing from shrimp tissues in aquaculture settings. The platform successfully detected Ent

Point-of-care testing for early detection of sepsis: a systematic literature review.

Early detection of sepsis is critical for improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality. This includes the development of rapid, portable, and cost-effective point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tools. Recent advances in biosensors, microfluidics, and lab-on-a-chip (LOC) platforms, along with improvements in data analytics, have paved the way for novel POC systems. To evaluate research trends and technological progress in this field, we conducted a comprehensive literature search in Web of Science and Scopus databases from inception to September 2024. The strategy ("*Sepsis*" OR "Septic*") AND (

Sickle Cell Screening in Adults: A Current Review of Point-of-Care Testing.

In adults, the sickle cell solubility test (SCST) is the most common screening test to determine the presence of hemoglobin S (HbS) within a blood sample. The assay is inexpensive, rapid, highly sensitive and specific. However, the SCST cannot accurately quantify the level of HbS in a test sample and requires confirmatory testing to distinguish between sickle trait and sickle cell disease. Despite these limitations, it remains the standard screening tool for HbS in a variety of settings such as screening in the US military or by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. With an increased a

Current Status of Point-of-Care Testing for Human Immunodeficiency Virus Drug Resistance.

Healthcare delivery has advanced due to the implementation of point-of-care testing, which is often performed within minutes to hours in minimally equipped laboratories or at home. Technologic advances are leading to point-of-care kits that incorporate nucleic acid-based assays, including polymerase chain reaction, isothermal amplification, ligation, and hybridization reactions. As a limited number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with clinically significant human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug resistance, assays to detect these mutations have been developed. Early versions

Validation of a novel point of care testing device for sickle cell disease.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is one of the most common inherited blood disorders. Universal screening and early intervention have significantly helped to reduce childhood mortality in high-resource countries. However, persons living in low-resource settings are often not diagnosed until late childhood when they present with clinical symptoms. In addition, confirmation of disease in affected individuals in the urgent care setting is limited in both high- and low-resource areas, often leading to delay in treatment. All of the current diagnostic methods rely on advanced laboratory systems and

A critical appraisal of point-of-care coagulation testing in critically ill patients.

Derangement of the coagulation system is a common phenomenon in critically ill patients, who may present with severe bleeding and/or conditions associated with a prothrombotic state. Monitoring of this coagulopathy can be performed with conventional coagulation assays; however, point-of-care tests have become increasingly attractive, because not only do they yield a more rapid result than clinical laboratory testing, but they may also provide a more complete picture of the condition of the hemostatic system. There are many potential areas of study and applications of point-of-care hemostatic t

Point-of-Care Testing in PKU: A New ERA of Blood Phenylalanine Monitoring.

Background: In phenylketonuria (PKU) patients, dried blood spot (DBS) sampling remains the standard method for monitoring phenylalanine (Phe) levels. However, delays in reporting results can hinder timely dietary adjustments. Patients and caregivers have expressed a preference for point-of-care testing (POCT) devices that enable home-based monitoring. Objectives: Our aim was to compare blood Phe measurements in PKU patients and caregiver usability of a POCT system with DBS, which is the standard practice monitoring method. Methods: Twenty participants (eighteen children with PKU and two health

Updated Review of Neurologic Concussion Biomarkers for Time-sensitive Point-of-care Testing.

As traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) continue to rise annually, scientists are continuing to improve point-of-care (POC) testing, involved in TBI diagnosis. TBIs, having various levels of severity, are often misdiagnosed or overlooked, especially in acute mild TBI or concussion scenarios. At the POC, currently, medical professionals utilize neuroimaging, cognitive scales, and biomarker assays to diagnose concussions and other forms of TBI. However, many of these parameters hinder diagnostic value due to accessibility and time-sensitive restraints. After analyzing the profuse research surrounding

Point-of-care testing of hyponatremia and hypernatremia levels: An optoplasmonic biosensing approach.

In the human body, sodium ion (Na+) is the principal extracellular cation and its imbalance in blood or lymph results in either hyponatremia or hypernatremia conditions. Any of these scenarios have fatal effects on a patient's health over time. However, the existing technologies limit quick point-of-care (POC) testing options. To overcome the challenges associated with prompt diagnosis, we proposed a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for in situ rapid testing of Na+ ion levels in patient's blood samples. A unique PCF sensor with a modified square lattice

Point-of-Care Testing of Enzyme Polymorphisms for Predicting Hypnotizability and Postoperative Pain.

Hypnotizability is a stable trait that moderates the benefit of hypnosis for treating pain, but limited availability of hypnotizability testing deters widespread use of hypnosis. Inexpensive genotyping of four single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) gene was performed using giant magnetoresistive biosensors to determine if hypnotizable individuals can be identified for targeted hypnosis referrals. For individuals with the proposed optimal COMT diplotypes, 89.5% score highly on the Hypnotic Induction Profile (odds ratio, 6.12; 95% CI, 1.26-28.75), which identi
