Double peak and prolonged absorption after large acetaminophen extended release and diphenhydramine ingestion.

Acetaminophen and acetaminophen combination products are the most frequent medications involved in intentional and unintentional poisonings. The 2008 National Poison Data System compiled by the American Association of Poison Control Centers documented 98,578 acetaminophen-related poisonings, which includes 91 fatalities. Very few case reports of ingestions of acetaminophen extended release with anticholinergics are reported in the literature.

Poison treatment in the home. American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Injury, Violence, and Poison Prevention.

The ingestion of a potentially poisonous substance by a young child is a common event, with the American Association of Poison Control Centers reporting approximately 1.2 million such events in the United States in 2001. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has long concerned itself with this issue and has made poison prevention an integral component of its injury prevention initiatives. A key AAP recommendation has been to keep a 1-oz bottle of syrup of ipecac in the home to be used only on the advice of a physician or poison control center. Recently, there has been interest regarding act

Differences Between Snakebites with Concomitant Use of Alcohol or Drugs and Single Snakebites.

OBJECTIVES: Published reports have suggested that the concurrent use of alcohol or drugs occurs among some snakebite victims, but no national assessment of such data exists. METHODS: We used data from US poison control centers collected during telephone calls in calendar years 2000-2013 to compare snake envenomations with concomitant use of drugs, alcohol, or both to snakebites lacking such use. RESULTS: A total of 608 snakebites with 659 instances of concomitant alcohol/drug use were reported, which represent approximately 1% of 92,751 snakebites reported to US poison control centers. An an

Assessing unnecessary emergency department visits for poison exposures in pediatric patients less than six years old.

INTRODUCTION: We will investigate the medical necessity of pediatric emergency department presentations, specifically for emergency department poison cases where a poison control center was not contacted prior to presenting. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 348 poison control center cases involving patients aged < six, originating from a healthcare facility were evaluated. Toxicologists were presented with case summaries and were asked: "would you send this patient to the emergency department?" Evaluators answered on a 4-point Likert scale from "definitely would not send" to "definitely w

Incidents of potential public health significance identified using national surveillance of US poison center data (2008-2012).

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Association of Poison Control Centers conduct national surveillance on data collected by US poison centers to identify incidents of potential public health significance (IPHS). The overarching goals of this collaboration are to improve CDC's national surveillance capacity for public health threats, identify early markers of public health incidents and enhance situational awareness. The National Poison Data System (NPDS) is used as a surveillance system to automatically identify data anomalies. PURPOSE: To charac

Health hazards associated with laundry detergent pods - United States, May-June 2012.

During May and early June 2012, the Carolinas Poison Center and the Poison Control Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia received four reports of children with vomiting, mental status changes, and respiratory distress after ingesting the contents of laundry detergent pods. Laundry detergent pods are single-load capsules that contain concentrated liquid detergent within a water-soluble membrane that dissolves when in contact with moisture. Laundry detergent pods were introduced in the U.S. market in 2010, and multiple manufacturers now sell laundry detergent packaged in pods (2-4).

A regional poison control system. Effect on response to hypothetical poisonings.

Poisoning of young children frequently results in parents seeking help. Parents either telephone for poison treatment information or go directly to a physician's office, hospital clinic, or emergency room. To determine if a regional poison control system reduces the inappropriate use of medical treatment services, parents attending suburban and inner-city clinics were presented hypothetical pediatric poisoning episodes and asked how they would respond. Parents living in a state serviced by a regional poison information center (Massachusetts) telephoned for information significantly more often

Pattern of orlistat exposures in children aged 5 years or less.

On February 7, 2007, orlistat became the first weight-loss drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for over-the-counter sales. However, information on exposures among young children is limited. The objective of this study was to describe the pattern of orlistat exposures among young children reported to poison control centers. The pattern of all exposures to orlistat alone among patients < or = 5 years old reported to six poison control centers during 1999-2005 was identified with respect to various factors. There were 107 cases. The average age was 21.4 months. There w

Impact of mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place order on controlled substance use among rural versus urban communities in the United States.

PURPOSE: Mandatory COVID-19 shelter-in-place (SIP) orders have been imposed to fight the pandemic. They may also have led to unintended consequences of increased use of controlled substances especially among rural communities due to increased social isolation. Using the data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers, this study tests the hypothesis that the poison control centers received higher rates of calls related to exposures to controlled substances from rural counties than they did from urban counties during the SIP period. METHODS: Call counts received by the poison cont

Malicious use of nonpharmaceuticals in children.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe malicious nonpharmaceutical exposures in children reported to US poison centers. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of all nonpharmaceutical exposures involving children 7 years old reported to the US National Poison Data System (NPDS) from 2000 to 2008 for which the reason for exposure was coded as "malicious". The American Association of Poison Control Centers definition and categorization of nonpharmaceuticals was used. Data collected for each case included age, gender, month and year of the exposure, the exposed substance or

Clinical toxicology--past, present and future.

1. The alarming increase in the incidence of self-poisoning in Western countries in the 1950s prompted the establishment of the National Poisons Information Service in the UK and the designation of certain Regional Poisoning Treatment Centres. 2. The substances taken in acute poisoning episodes largely reflect the poisons available in the community and, in the UK at least, have changed with fashions in prescribing although psychotropic drugs and analgesics always predominate. 3. Intensive supportive care with repeat-dose oral activated charcoal and even haemoperfusion has been proved effective
