INTRODUCTION: Rubella is the disease subject to the elimination programme coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Generally, rubella is an infection of mild course among children but in the case of pregnant women, who are not immunized, it may contribute to the occurrence of severe congenital abnormalities (congenital rubella syndrome) may amount to 95%. The strategy of the countries belonging to the WHO European Region is directed to the interruption of the rubella virus transmission in the environment in order to prevent the cases of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). [Pertussis in Poland in 2010].

INTRODUCTION: Pertussis is an acute infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract. It is the infection of the re-emerging character and affects infants, youth and more frequently adults. The results of the Nationwide Surveillance Study of Pertussis conducted at the Department of Epidemiology (NIPH-NIH) in 2009-2011 confirmed the high incidence of pertussis in adults, among whom the only symptom of Bordetella pertussis infection was prolonged cough. The emphasis should be put on the fact that the infected adults (especially the older adults) are the reservoirs of the pathogen and as consequ

Only 10 vaccinated people had contact with a rabid animal. The main reason for vaccination against rabies was exposure to an animal with not excluded rabies (5 695 cases, 89%).

In Poland, 7,587 cases of rubella were registered in 2009 (incidence 19.9 per 100,000 population). According to a new rubella case definition, introduced in 2009, 7 (0.1%) cases were classified as confirmed cases, 30 (0.4%) as probable. One case of congenital rubella syndrome was reported. The incidence in men (26.6) was 1.9-times higher than in women (13.6). The highest incidence was observed in children aged 7 and 8 years (180.3 and 175.6, respectively). No rubella deaths were registered. An improvement of laboratory diagnosis of reported cases is necessary to assess the impact of 2-dose imm

In this year 214 cases of enteric yersiniosis and 39 cases of extraintestinal yersiniosis were notified. About 75% of patients were hospitalized. There were 2 reported deaths probably linked to yersiniosis. The most frequent clinical manifestations of intestinal yersiniosis were diarrhea (88% of cases), high temperature (79%), abdominal pain (41%) and vomits (30%). Out of 39 extraintestinal cases ofyersiniosis 26 (about 67%) patients had acute arthritis symptoms from o

[Trichinellosis in Poland in 2006].

In the year 2006 in Poland a total of 130 cases of human trichinellosis were registered, 5 of which were individual cases. The remaining cases occurred in seven outbreaks. Two outbreaks were large and involved 257 exposed people of which 104 became ill. The source of the infection in most of the outbreaks was wild boar meat. In 2 outbreaks the infected products were prepared from pork and wild boar meat and in one of the outbreaks only from pork. The presence of Trichinella endemic areas in Poland determines the necessity of careful meat inspection for Trichinella spp.

[Mumps in Poland in 2006].

In 2006, 15,115 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (39.6 per 100,000) was considerably lower compared to 2005 (188.5) and to the median incidence in 2000-2004 (104.6). The decrease of mumps incidence in 2006 is related to high coverage of routine two-dose immunisation against measles, mumps and rubella, maintained since its implementation in 2003. Children 5-9 year old were the most affected age group (incidence 328.7 per 100,000). Since the immunisation schedule during 2003-2006 involved administration of MMR doses at the ages of 2 and 10 years, a stable decrease of mumps i
