Thoracic outlet syndrome in a patient with Poland syndrome.

We report a 20-year-old man with Poland syndrome who suffered from weakness, pain, numbness, and discoloration in the left upper extremity. He was eventually diagnosed as also having thoracic outlet syndrome. The concomitance of these two disorders is discussed with a special emphasis on the underlying mechanisms.

Optic disc dysplasia in poland syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report optic disc dysplasia in a case of Poland syndrome. DESIGN: Non-interventional case report. METHODS: A 2-year-old boy with Poland syndrome was referred for ophthalmic evaluation after abnormal optic discs were found on exam. RESULTS: Physical exam at birth revealed right-sided aplasia of the pectoralis major muscle, symbrachydactyly, hypoplastic scapula, and an abnormal third rib. On dilated examination the optic nerve heads were dysplastic. The findings included multiple cilioretinal vessels, situs inversus, inferotemporal excavation, and surrounding pigmentary disturbanc

Poland syndrome with dextrocardia: case report.

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital condition presentingwith typical features including an absent costosternal head of pectoralis major andipsilateral brachysyndactyly. There are many clinical variations of the syndrome including rib defects, absence of shoulder girdle muscle and breast hypoplasia or agenesis. Dextrocardia is rarely associated with Poland Syndrome with only 22 cases being previously reported in the worldwide literature. Whereas 'classical' Poland syndrome is predominantly right sided, all cases associated with dextrocardia have been left sided. We report a further case of lef

Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of poland syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a congenital nongenetic anomaly characterized by unilateral chest wall hypoplasia, ipsilateral hand abnormalities, and hemivertebrae. It has not ben described so far in the fetus. CASE: The patient was referred for suspected left-arm hypomelia at 22 weeks of gestation. On ultrasonography, we confirmed the presence of severe left-sided hypomelia and detected an asymmetry of the rib cage and 3 thoracic hemivertebrae. The absence of heart defects led us to make the putative diagnosis of Poland syndrome. After termination of pregnancy, the diagnosis was confirmed by

[Poland syndrome. Clinical and structural considerations].

The Authors reported 4 cases of Poland Syndrome. In one of these was possible to perform a skin and muscle biopsy. The clinical aspects of the patients, compared with those observed in the literature are reported. The disease is a malformative syndrome, and the histological features of skin and muscle appeared not structurally affected.

Poland syndrome associated with renal agenesis.

Poland syndrome is characterized by unilateral aplasia or hypoplasia of the sternocostal portion of the pectoralis major muscle and ipsilateral syndactyly. In some cases other associated anomalies, including renal malformations, dextrocardia, and vertebral abnormalities, have been reported. We report a 7-month-old girl with Poland syndrome who also presented with ipsilateral renal agenesis. This report suggests that renal structural anomaly may be an integral part of this syndrome. We recommend renal imaging studies be performed on all children with Poland syndrome.

Poland-Moebius syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The primary site of pathology in Moebius syndrome is still unknown, although several studies have variably localized the lesion in the extraocular muscles, cranial nerves, or central nervous system. CASE: A 24-year-old man with Poland-Moebius syndrome and acquired progressive bilateral paralytic lower eyelid ectropion is described. OBSERVATIONS: In this patient, magnetic resonance imaging studies revealed a barely detectable pontine hypoplasia and normal recti muscles. Nerve conduction studies of the facial nerves showed a severe demyelinating or dysmyelinating type of neuropathy

Peroneal muscular atrophy with Poland syndrome.

A 22-year-old male college student had a syndactyly between the second and third fingers of his left hand, which was congenitally small in size. His left pectoralis muscles were absent. He first walked at the age of 12 months, but soon developed difficulties in walking due to weakness of the legs. Atrophy and weakness of the legs aggravated gradually. He was diagnosed as having peroneal muscular atrophy and Poland syndrome, an association of which has not been reported before. A small number of similar cases of peroneal muscular atrophy with various skeletal abnormalities in the literature sug

Poland-Möbius syndrome: a case report.

The Poland-Möbius syndrome is a combination of two rare congenital syndromes with an estimated prevalence of 1:500,000. It is characterized by a nonprogressive bilateral facial paralysis, the inability of the eyes to abduct beyond the midline, orofacial anomalies, limb deficiencies, and an absence or hypoplasia of the pectoral muscles.

Poland-Möbius syndrome associated with dextrocardia.

A newborn male with Möbius syndrome, Poland anomaly, and dextrocardia is described. This is the second case reported of Poland-Möbius syndrome associated with dextrocardia. The patient presented with strabismus, facial diplegia, difficulty in swallowing, hypoplasia of the left pectoralis major muscle, partial absence of the upper costal cartilages, absence of the left areola, hypoplasia of the left forearm and hand, and dextrocardia without murmurs.

Parry-Romberg syndrome in association with contralateral Poland syndrome.

A 35-year-old woman had a 4-year history of skin depression on the right side of both the forehead and chin. A biopsy specimen showed a normal dermis and an absence of subcutaneous tissue. She also had Poland syndrome on the left side of the body, with loss of the sternocostal portion of the greater pectoral muscle. Significant cosmetic improvement was achieved with dermal fat grafts and silicone implants.

Esophageal Cancer in a Patient With Poland Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is an uncommon congenital condition marked by the absence of major chest muscles, typically on one side. Individuals with congenital abnormalities such as Poland syndrome are at increased risk for cancer. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old male with undiagnosed Poland syndrome initially presented with dysphagia. The patient had a 20 pack-year smoking history but had quit smoking at the time of presentation. Endoscopic ultrasound showed a large obstructing mass in the distal third of the esophagus, and computed tomography (CT) scan showed an esophageal mass and congenital a

Acute Pericarditis in a Patient With Poland Syndrome.

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by unilateral absence or hypoplasia of the pectoralis major muscle. We report the case of a 32-year-old man with previously undiagnosed Poland syndrome who presented with acute, severe, tearing chest pain radiating to the back, which worsened with sitting up and improved with lying down. The cardiac physical exam was negative for murmur and friction rub. Electrocardiograms showed focal ST-segment elevations in precordial leads V2-V4, and serial troponin levels were negative. Life-threatening cardiac causes of chest pain, such as acute

Poland's syndrome and breast cancer: coincidence or not?

Poland's syndrome is an uncommon congenital anomaly of unknown etiology, the main characteristic of which is the absence of the major pectoral muscle. Thorax and upper limb malformations also may be present. Poland's syndrome has been observed in clinical cases connected to a variety of neoplasia, primarily hematological disorders. Patients with Poland's syndrome who have developed breast cancer have been reported incidentally. Here we report a case of Poland's syndrome associated with breast cancer.
