Exploring structural violence in the context of disability and poverty in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: While it is widely assumed that disability, poverty and health are closely linked, research falls short of fully understanding the link. One approach to analysing the links between disability and poverty is through the concept of structural violence, referring to social structures that contribute to the impoverishment of individuals or communities. These structures can be political, ecological, legal and economic, among others. OBJECTIVE: To explore structural violence and how it affects families of children with cerebral palsy among the Tonga ethnic group living in poor rural com

Political commitment for vulnerable populations during donor transition.

The responsibilities for the programmatic, technical and financial support of health programmes are increasingly being passed from external donors to governments. Programmes for family planning, human immunodeficiency virus, immunization, malaria and tuberculosis have already faced such donor transition, which is a difficult and often political process. Wherever programmes and services aimed at vulnerable populations are primarily supported by donors, the post-transition future is uncertain. Overreliance on donor support is often a reflection of limited domestic political commitment. Limited c

Cervical screening uptake, political interest and voter turnout: a population-based survey of women in England.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between cervical screening uptake and political engagement, and to test whether political engagement and voting behaviour mediate the association between age and cervical screening uptake. SETTING: A population-based survey of women in England in 2010. METHODS: Women aged 26-64 took part in home-based computer-assisted interviews (n = 890). Women were classified as 'up to date' or 'overdue/never been screened' for cervical screening. RESULTS: Most women (81%) were up-to-date with screening; 19% were overdue. Age and marital status were associated with

Psychological preparedness for trauma as a protective factor in survivors of torture.

BACKGROUND: Although much research has focused on mechanisms of traumatization and factors related to post-trauma psychological functioning in survivors of trauma, there have been few studies of survivors of torture despite the widespread practice of torture in the world. The aim of this study was to examine the role of 'psychological preparedness' for trauma in post-traumatic stress responses in survivors of torture. METHOD: Thirty-four torture survivors who had no history of political activity, commitment to a political cause or group, or expectations of arrest and torture were compared wit

Fusion with political leaders predicts willingness to persecute immigrants and political opponents.

From the 2016 US presidential election and into 2019, we demonstrate that a visceral feeling of oneness (that is, psychological fusion) with a political leader can fuel partisans' willingness to actively participate in political violence. In studies 1 and 2, fusion with Donald Trump predicted Republicans' willingness to violently persecute Muslims (over and above other established predictors). In study 3, relative deprivation increased fusion with Trump and, subsequently, willingness to violently challenge election results. In study 4, fusion with Trump increased after his election and predict

Marine protected areas and spatial fetishism: A viewpoint on destructive fishing in coastal Tanzania.

This paper focuses on destructive fishing practices in coastal Tanzania. I argue that the dominant conservation narrative that increased capacity and 'political will' for enforcement of marine protected areas (MPAs) reflects a form of spatial fetishization, in that it overemphasizes the influence of space over social behaviour. I contend that Tanzanian MPAs offer bandage solutions to underlying structural problems that are contingent upon the inconsistent availability of social and financial resources for monitoring activities. I suggest that a paradigm shift is necessary, involving the de-ter

George Higoumenakis (1895-1983): Greek dermatologist.

This paper describes the Higoumenakis sign, enlargement of the sternal end of the clavicle in patients with late congenital syphilis and the dermatologist after whom it is named. Several professors and doctors from the Medical School of the University of Athens opposed his actions especially at the University in Greece. His persistence led him to productive scientific activity in syphilis, leishmaniasis and psoriasis. He became a member of the Greek Parliament from 1964 to 1967 and eventually Minister of Hygiene - even though this may have been an imprudent political choice, due to the unstabl

The author analyzes the conservative political movement in Russia and characterizes its internal structure: the main political organizations, leaders, social base, their representation in government bodies (primarily in the State Duma). According to the au

The Limits of Corporate Social Responsibility: Techniques of Neutralization, Stakeholder Management and Political CSR.

Since scholarly interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) has primarily focused on the synergies between social and economic performance, our understanding of how (and the conditions under which) companies use CSR to produce policy outcomes that work against public welfare has remained comparatively under-developed. In particular, little is known about how corporate decision-makers privately reconcile the conflicts between public and private interests, even though this is likely to be relevant to understanding the limitations of CSR as a means of aligning business activity with the bro

The downside of managers: The moderator role of political skill & deceptive situation.

Relying on the trait activation theory and socioanalytic theory, this study investigate conditions that activate or restrain a manager's dark triad, which can predict exploitative leadership. First, we examine the interacting effect of narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy with deceptive situation cues at work. Then, we investigated the effect of a manager's political skill - into the emergence of exploitative leadership. A multisource data were collected across two studies administered first to employees then to their corresponding managers (N = 150). Structural equation modeling were

Ageing with(out) kin: Migration, longing, and disenchantment in Punjab.

Drawing on an ethnography with older adults in the northern Indian city of Patiala and its peripheral areas, this paper addresses three interconnected questions. How do older adults in Punjab experience ageing in the absence of kin members who migrate transnationally? How does migration reshape their perceptions of care, belonging, family reconfiguration, and other forms of social relatedness? How do these experiences reflect broader socio-political shifts in Punjab, both culturally and politically? First, the paper examines the paradox of transnational migration. Older adults actively facilit

Primary health care-oriented reforms: the political economy dynamics underlying health-system shifts across nine countries.

Using evidence from nine countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kenya, New Zealand, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay), we analyze the political economy dynamics that emerged during implementation of primary health care (PHC)-oriented reforms. Across these cases, we identify 10 recurring health-system "shifts" toward stronger PHC orientation, which serve as a descriptive framework for examining the political economy challenges reformers faced and the strategies they used to navigate them. Primary data were collected from 356 participants through key informant interv

Stress of Kindergarten teachers: How we tried to detect and to reduce it by using a small and wearable ECG and acceleration measuring device?

In 2014 school year, four female teachers of Nazareth Kindergarten decided to resign (DRT) due to workplace stress caused by human relationships between themselves. Our preliminary interview investigation revealed there was a stressor (STR), a certain elder female teacher and her less polite words and attitude. Using small and wearable ECG and acceleration measuring device, we measured 24 hour's autonomic nervous system's activity (ASNA) and sleep behavior of the STR and surrounding teachers, and tried to evaluate their stress objectively and to understand the reason of STR's less polite behav

Urban sprawl and you: how sprawl adversely affects worker health.

Urban sprawl, once thought of as just an environmental issue, is currently gaining momentum as an emerging public health issue worthy of research and political attention. Characteristics seen in sprawling communities include increasing traffic volumes; inadequate public transportation; pedestrian unfriendly streets; and the division of businesses, shops, and homes. These characteristics can affect health in many ways. Greater air pollution contributes to higher asthma and other lung disorder rates. An increased dependence on the automobile encourages a more sedentary lifestyle and can potentia

[Economic evaluation and decision making in environmental health].

Due to the increasing deterioration of the environment and its possible consequences for the health of the population the design and implementation of policies for the control of economic activities according to criteria for the protection of human health and the environment itself have become an unquestionable need. Such policies would include the economic feasibility of existing alternatives for protection. Due to the huge interests involved, however, other factors, both social and political should also be taken into consideration. Economic evaluation has been seen as a promising foundation

Lessons for Immunisation Policy and Practice From the Deadly Measles Resurgence in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is experiencing one of the deadliest outbreaks of measles in 2026, with at least 472 suspected child deaths and over 67,079 suspected cases as of 27 May 2026. It has happened primarily following a fall in measles vaccination coverage in 2025, largely due to the cancellation of a planned 2024 Measles-Rubella vaccination Campaign and major political unrest. This editorial, based on available surveillance data, disease transmission modelling and lower vaccination coverage, argues that the 2026 measles outbreak was predictable, preventable and needed prompt action and management. We urg

Consequences of hunger for individuals and societies.

Famine and the manifestations of acute hunger that result are an unnecessary disgrace to our global society and serious in their political, economic, and social consequences. Probably more damaging is the chronic undernutrition that afflicts such a large proportion of the populations of developing countries and the hidden hungers of iron deficiency, avitaminosis A, and iodine deficiency disorders that are enormously widespread. Famine in the modern world is almost invariably superimposed on chronic undernutrition that is not solved with emergency relief. Adaptation to this undernutrition requi

'They might as well brand us': working-class resistance to compulsory vaccination in Victorian England.

From its origins in resistance to the 1853 Compulsory Vaccination Act, the Victorian anti-vaccination movement successfully challenged the public health policies of an increasingly interventionist state. Anti-vaccinationists were not only middle-class reformers, but were also drawn from a politically active working class. These campaigners saw compulsory vaccination as an extreme example of class legislation, for its policy and administration implicitly targeted working-class infants and inflicted multiple penalties on a public who considered themselves 'conscientious objectors'. Anti-vaccinat

Incarceration, menstruation and COVID-19: a viewpoint of the exacerbated inequalities and health disparities in South African correctional facilities.

PURPOSE: The menstrual health and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) of incarcerated women remains relatively low on the agenda of public health interventions globally, widening the inequitable access of incarcerated women to safe and readily available menstrual health products (MHP). The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted on the MHM gains made in various development sectors in the global North and South, through its amplification of vulnerability for already at-risk populations. This is especially significant to developing countries such as South Africa where the incarcerated female pop
