Rose mallows belong to the Muenchhusia section of the Hibiscus genus. They represent a small group of cold tolerant North American plants and are popular ornamentals mainly because of their abundant, large and colorful flowers. Due to their geographical origin they are well suited for garden use in temperate regions worldwide. The aim of the study was to investigate hybridization barriers in crosses among cultivars of Hibiscus species from the Muenchhusia section: H. coccineus, H. laevis and H. moscheutos. Crossing barriers were identified as both pre- and post-zygotic. The analysis of pollen

Flowering plants have evolved a unique reproductive process called double fertilization, whereby two dimorphic female gametes are fertilized by two immotile sperm cells conveyed by the pollen tube. The two sperm cells are arranged in tandem with a leading pollen tube nucleus to form the male germ unit and are placed under the same genetic controls. Genes controlling double fertilization have been identified, but whether each sperm cell is able to fertilize either female gamete is still unclear. The dynamics of individual sperm cells after their release in the female tissue remain largely unkno

Mimicry is the close resemblance of one living organism (the mimic) to another (the model), leading to misidentification by a third organism (the operator). Similar to other organism groups, certain species of plant-parasitic fungi are known to engage in mimetic relationships, thereby increasing their fitness. In some cases, fungal infection can lead to the formation of flower mimics (pseudo flowers) that attract insect pollinators via visual and/or olfactory cues; these insects then either transmit fungal gametes to accomplish outcrossing (e.g. in some heterothallic rust fungi belonging to th

Pollinator behavior is vital to plant-pollinator interactions, affecting the acquisition of floral rewards, patterns of pollen transfer, and plant reproductive success. During buzz pollination, bees produce vibrations with their indirect flight muscles to extract pollen from tube-like flowers. Vibrations can be transmitted to the flower via the mandibles, abdomen, legs, or thorax directly. Vibration amplitude at the flower determines the rate of pollen release and should vary with the coupling of bee and flower. This coupling often occurs through anther biting, but no studies have quantified h

Cell polarity and tip growth rely on the dynamic spatial organization of signaling and structural components. Quantitative characterization of these spatiotemporal dynamics is critical for understanding polarized cell growth, yet manual quantification is labor-intensive and existing computational tools often lack the flexibility and robustness needed to analyze molecular and structural dynamics in tip-growing cells. Tip Quantification (TipQuant) identifies the cell apex by detecting the site of maximum expansion and automatically quantifies fluorescence distribution along the plasma membrane a

Heterostyly is a breeding system that promotes outbreeding through a combination of morphological and physiological floral traits. In Turnera these traits are governed by a single, hemizygous S-locus containing just three genes. We report that the S-locus gene, BAHD, is mutated and encodes a severely truncated protein in a self-compatible long homostyle species. Further, a self-compatible long homostyle mutant possesses a T. krapovickasii BAHD allele with a point mutation in a highly conserved domain of BAHD acyl transferases. Wild type and mutant TkBAHD alleles were expressed in Arabidop

Approximately 10% of flowering plant species conceal their pollen within tube-like poricidal anthers. Bees extract pollen from poricidal anthers via floral buzzing, a behavior during which they apply cyclic forces by biting the anther and rapidly contracting their flight muscles. The success of pollen extraction during floral buzzing relies on the direction and magnitude of the forces applied by the bees, yet these forces and forcing directions have not been previously quantified. In this work, we developed an experiment to simultaneously measure the directional forces and thorax kinematics pr

Plant GDP-D-mannose epimerase (GME) converts GDP-D-mannose to GDP-L-galactose, a precursor of both L-ascorbate (vitamin C) and cell wall polysaccharides. However, the genetic functions of GME in Arabidopsis are unclear. In this study, we found that mutations in Arabidopsis GME affect pollen germination, pollen tube elongation, and transmission and development of the male gametophyte through analysis of the heterozygous GME/gme plants and the homozygous gme plants. Arabidopsis gme mutants also exhibit severe growth defects and early leaf senescence. Surprisingly, the defects in male gametophyte

Most flowering plants are hermaphrodites, with flowers having both male and female reproductive organs. One widespread adaptation to limit self-fertilization is self-incompatibility (SI), where self-pollen fails to fertilize ovules.1,2 In homomorphic SI, many morphologically indistinguishable mating types are found, although in heteromorphic SI, the two or three mating types are associated with different floral morphologies.3-6 In heterostylous Primula, a hemizygous supergene determines a short-styled S-morph and a long-styled L-morph, corresponding to two different mating types, and full seed

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there is no consensus regarding the best protocol for diagnosing Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). We aimed to evaluate how patient characteristics affect tubomanometry (TMM) results. If an association between patient characteristics and TMM results exists, this should be considered in TMM interpretation. We also wanted to study if TMM correlates with other diagnostic tools of ETD.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients with TMM results available from November 2011 to October 2020 at a tertiary referral center, including 432 ears from 219 p

Distant hybridization is critical for fruit tree germplasm innovation yet difficult to achieve in woody fruit trees. Successful distant hybridization between apple and pear is rare among fruit trees, but the molecular mechanism of their compatibility remains unclear. Revealing this biological process is vital for the innovation of fruit tree cultivation. This study performed distant hybridization experiments using cultivated apple as female parents and multiple pear cultivars as male parents, and obtained compatible hybrids from the cross of 'YYH' apple × 'YH' pear. To investigate the underlyi

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a genetic mechanism to prevent self-fertilization and thereby promote outcrossing in hermaphroditic plant species through discrimination of self and nonself-pollen by pistils. In many SI systems, recognition between pollen and pistils is controlled by a single multiallelic locus (called the S-locus), in which multiple alleles (called S-alleles) are segregating. Because of the extreme level of polymorphism of the S-locus, identification of S-alleles has been a major issue in many SI studies for decades. Here, we report an RNA-seq-based method to explore allelic dive

Plant-pollinator interactions are essential for maintaining pollination services but may be sensitive to disruption from climate change. Higher temperatures can reduce flower size, nectar availability, and other floral traits, and shorten pollinator tongue and increase body size. This could, in turn, reduce flower-pollinator size matching, leading to difficulties accessing nectar and effectively transferring pollen between flowers. However, the effects of climate change on plant-pollinator trait matching are rarely experimentally tested. We conducted a 2-year simulated warming experiment and a

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis in soil may be directly or indirectly involved in the reproductive process of sexually reproducing plants (seed plants), and affect their reproductive fitness. However, it is not clear how underground AM symbiosis affects plant reproductive function. Here, we reviewed the studies on the effects of AM symbiosis on plant reproductive fitness including both male function (pollen) and female function (seed). AM symbiosis regulates the development and function of plant sexual organs by affecting the nutrient using strategy and participating in the formation of

Strawberries are available throughout the year either from production in the field or from high and low tunnel culture. Diversity of production conditions results in new challenges in controlling diseases before and after harvest. Fungicides have traditionally been used to control these diseases; however, their limitations necessitate a search for new approaches. We found that UV-C irradiation of Botrytis cinerea, a major pathogen of strawberry, can effectively kill this fungus if a dark period follows the treatment. The inclusion of a 4-h dark period resulted in almost complete kill of B. cin

We have studied 35 children with seasonal allergic rhinitis confirmed by positive skin tests and RAST to grass pollen. Intranasal antigen provocation was performed to evaluate the function of the eustachian tube (ET) and middle ear pressure (MEP). Tympanometry was used to evaluate the changes in MEP, while Valsava and Toynbee tympanometric tests were employed to study the ET function, and the changes in nasal airway resistance were measured by anterior rhinomanometry. ET dysfunction (ETD) and a decrease in MEP and nasal airway resistance were demonstrated in the children under study as compare

BACKGROUND: Typhae Pollen is one of the earliest pollen varieties used in the world, whether as a herbal medicine or a dietary additive. Although Typhae Pollen has been reported to alleviate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescriptions, its active components and potential mechanisms of action remain insufficiently understood.
PURPOSE: This study aims to explore the therapeutic efficacy and molecular mechanism of Typhae Pollen active subfraction (TPAS) against BPH, as well as its active ingredients.
METHODS: The qualitative and quan

The geographical variation in the strength and direction of selection in highly specialized plant-pollinator mutualisms can lead to different interaction outcomes among populations. In this study, we investigated the mutualistic interaction between an alpine ginger Roscoea purpurea and a long-tongued tabanid fly Philoliche longirostris across eight populations in central Nepal. We measured the flower and fly traits, assessed the visitation behaviour and frequencies of P. longirostris, and quantified the reproductive success of R. purpurea. Our results revealed that in three of the eight popula

Calnexin (CNX) and calreticulin (CRT) are homologous lectin chaperones in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that facilitate glycoprotein folding and retain folding intermediates to prevent their transit via the secretary pathway. The Arabidopsis genome has two CNX (CNX1 and CNX2) and three CRT (CRT1, CRT2 and CRT3) homologs. Despite growing evidence of the biological roles of CNXs and CRTs, little is understood about their function in Arabidopsis growth and development under normal conditions. Here, we report that the deletion of CNX1, but not of CNX2, in the crt1 crt2 crt3 triple mutation backgr

Reproductive barriers in wild tomato relatives limit the introgression of valuable stress-resistance traits into cultivated tomato, yet the molecular mechanisms governing these barriers in Solanum chilense remain poorly understood compared to model species like Nicotiana alata or Solanum pennellii. This study aimed to characterize the phenotypic and transcriptional architecture of gametophytic self-incompatibility and unilateral incompatibility in Solanum chilense and its interspecific hybrids with Solanum lycopersicum. We combined phenotypic assays of pollen tube growth and fruit set with qua
