Museum Genomics of an Important Swedish Pollinator Reveals Population Stability Across Time.

Anthropogenic activity has driven a rapid decline in wild pollinator populations over the last several decades. Understanding the genomic consequences of these declines and their long-term effects requires establishing historical baselines for population diversity. To investigate this, we conducted temporal genomic analyses of a widespread and important pollinator, the common carder bee (Bombus pascuorum). We sequenced 102 historical, dry-pinned museum specimens collected across Sweden during the last 150 years, and analysed them alongside 59 modern individuals. While historical samples showed

Untargeted flower volatilome profiling highlights differential pollinator attraction strategies in muscadine.

Floral aromas are a mixture of volatile organic compounds, essential attributes associated with the attraction of different pollinators. This investigation is the first in-depth exploration of the volatile profiles of sixteen muscadine grape genotypes, producing female and perfect flowers using the headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME)-GC-MS-based untargeted volatilomics approach. A total of one hundred fifty volatile metabolites were identified in the muscadine flower genotypes, including the functional groups of hydrocarbons, esters, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, miscellaneous, and

Pesticide drift into field margins threatens bee pollinators and other beneficial insects.

Pesticide drift into sensitive habitats is an increasing concern in agricultural landscapes due to negative impacts on non-target animals including wild bees and other beneficial insects. Creating buffer zones between the crop and sensitive habitats has been commonly proposed as a mitigation measure for reducing off-target pesticide deposition. Given prior evidence of significant pesticide deposition in wildflower plantings adjacent to highbush blueberry farms in Michigan, the aim of this study was to determine the buffer zone needed to significantly reduce pesticide deposition in these planti

Selectivity of the botanical compounds to the pollinators Apis mellifera and Trigona hyalinata (Hymenoptera: Apidae).

The toxicity of essential oils that can be used in insect pest management to pollinators needs further studies. Apis mellifera Linnaeus and Trigona hyalinata (Lepeletier) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) foragers were exposed by three pathways to ginger, mint, oregano and thyme essential oils to provide their LC50, LD50 and LC90, LD90. Oregano and thyme were more toxic through contact and topically for A. mellifera while the toxicity of mint and ginger was lower. Trigona hyalinata was more tolerant to the essential oils than A. mellifera. In the walking test, the area was treated (totally or partially) w

Pollinator Foraging Strategies in Mixed Floral Arrays: Density Effects and Floral Constancy.

The profitability of any foraging strategy may be in part dependent on the number of foragers adopting it, and so it can be viewed mathematically as a "game." We explore here the implications of a game-theoretic model of pollinators foraging on a mixed array of two flower species, with individual pollinators either specializing on one or the other, or else acting as generalists. We further allow for the possibility of specialist advantages in foraging efficiency. The predicted mixture of pollinator behavioral strategies depends on the overall floral density and the relative densities of the tw

Mechanical mismatch of pollination-related traits causes severe pollen limitation in the Roscoea purpurea-Philoliche longirostris mutualism.

The geographical variation in the strength and direction of selection in highly specialized plant-pollinator mutualisms can lead to different interaction outcomes among populations. In this study, we investigated the mutualistic interaction between an alpine ginger Roscoea purpurea and a long-tongued tabanid fly Philoliche longirostris across eight populations in central Nepal. We measured the flower and fly traits, assessed the visitation behaviour and frequencies of P. longirostris, and quantified the reproductive success of R. purpurea. Our results revealed that in three of the eight popula

Sharing of 4-hydroxy-3-(methylthio)benzaldehyde as a pollination semiochemical among distantly related sexually deceptive orchids.

Sexually deceptive orchids mimic female mating signals of their pollinators to achieve pollination. In Australia, multiple orchid genera exploit male thynnine wasps as pollinators, raising the possibility of convergent evolution of floral traits. This study investigates the chemical basis of attraction in Spiculaea ciliata and its pollinator Thynnoturneria abspiculus, uncovering the use of shared chemical attractants. Flowers of S. ciliata were collected in the field and extracted in dichloromethane and methanol. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and field bioassays were used to ide

Bird pollination in three species of Phlogacanthus and its broader implications for bird-flower interactions in Asia.

PREMISE: Our knowledge of bird-flower interactions in Asia is limited. Here, we investigated the pollination ecology of three Phlogacanthus species that differ substantially in floral tube length. The floral tubes of bird-pollinated flowers may either correspond to the bill length of the primary bird pollinator, or relatively short-tubed flowers may be pollinated by both short- and relatively long-billed birds. The pollination systems of the three Phlogacanthus species may differ in traits other than floral tube length, reflecting their association with different bird groups. METHODS: We obse

Pollination and floral ecology of Arundina graminifolia (Orchidaceae) at the northern border of the species' natural distribution.

Arundina graminifolia is an early successional plant on Iriomote Island, the Ryukyus, Japan, where it is endangered. Populations flower for more than half a year, and many inflorescences bloom for one to several months. The nectarless gullet flowers, which open for up to six days, are self-compatible but cannot self-pollinate spontaneously; thus they rely on pollinating agents for capsule production. Field observations at two habitats identified at least six species of bees and wasps, primarily mate-seeking males of Megachile yaeyamaensis and Thyreus takaonis, as legitimate pollinators. Thus,

Signals of Paleotemperature in the Age Structure and Seasonal Distribution of Pollination Syndromes Across a Temperate Region.

Across the planet, angiosperm diversification has been shaped by palaeoclimates and biotic interactions, particularly with pollinators, leaving signatures in the angiosperm age structure. Regional floras represent biased samples of this global diversification shaped by dispersal, extinction and environmental filtering, yet it remains unclear whether floristic age structure reflects pollination strategies or their interaction with palaeoclimates. We constructed a 93% resolved phylogeny of all native 1178 angiosperms in the Netherlands and characterized age structure of eight pollination syndrom

The sexual reproductive strategy in clonal Scopolia carniolica is based on obligatory cross-pollination and self-incompatibility.

Understanding the reproductive biology and breeding system of rare species is crucial for effective conservation. We examined floral biology, assessed the true pollinators, and investigated the reproductive effect of six pollination treatments (spontaneous and induced autogamy, geitonogamy, spontaneous and supplemental cross-pollination, control - flowers exposed to natural pollinators) on the fruit and seed set and their quality (size, viability) in two populations (artificial and natural) of clonal Scopolia carniolica (Solanaceae), a rare species distributed across Central and South-Eastern

Neither nectar nor deception: the role of floral rewards in the pollination system of Laelia (Orchidaceae: Laeliinae).

Orchids offer a variety of floral rewards to pollinators. In many orchid groups, however, the transfer of pollen is based on food-deception, as in the case of Laelia (including Schomburgkia s.s.), a genus assigned to the Neotropical subtribe Laeliinae. Here, we report on the reproductive biology of a Brazilian member of this subtribe, namely, Laelia gloriosa, occurring in the forested areas of southeastern Brazil. The study includes analyses of floral morphology, histochemistry, and the chemical analysis of floral rewards and scents. Pollinators and pollination mechanism data were collected in

Pollinator Dependency and Regional Climate Affect Crop Yield Development Under Climate Change.

Climate change is severely impacting insects and flowering plants in different ways. While effects on plants, pollinators and their interactions have been amply discussed, subsequent impacts on pollination are rarely assessed. Understanding climate-change effects on pollination is particularly important for insect-pollinated crops as it ultimately influences yield and hence food production. This study investigated crop-yield changes over 35 years in two climatically distinct regions in Germany (cool-moist vs. warm-dry). Yield differences among crops showing different levels of pollinator depen

Salinity strengthens plant-pollinator mutualism through leaf physiological status in grafted tomatoes.

The interaction between rootstock-mediated leaf Na and nutrient concentrations, and the subsequent impact on Fv/Fm and unbalanced C/N are major traits associated with plant growth, yield, and bumblebees' pollinating activity under salinity. Soil and water salinization compromises crop yield by reducing plant growth and reproductive fitness through altering source-sink activities, which in turn, affects pollination ecosystem services. However, while pollination services are barely considered as crop breeding targets, little is known about how stress-induced changes in plants affect pollinators'

Museum specimens reveal the genomic consequences of long-term population decline in an insect pollinator.

Global insect pollinator populations are under threat, with reported declines attributed to increasing habitat loss, pesticide use, and disease. Tracking how genetic diversity has changed over time could reveal the rate and extent of these declines, and the adaptive capacity of affected species-providing an important complement to habitat-based conservation efforts. However, few studies have been able to reconstruct suitable historical baselines to link genomic changes with population change. Here, we use whole genome data from 101 museum specimens of the declining moss carder bumblebee (Bombu

Pollinator-mediated fitness differences do not fully explain the maintenance of gynodioecy in Sidalcea campestris.

PREMISE: The maintenance of gynodioecy, female and hermaphroditic coexistence in plants, requires females to have a reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites in offspring quality, quantity, or both. Pollinators can influence this by mediating the reproductive success of females and hermaphrodites. We measured differences in pollinator-mediated fitness components between female and hermaphroditic plants in Sidalcea campestris to evaluate the role of pollinator-mediated selection in maintaining gynodioecy. METHODS: We studied sex-biased pollinator dynamics across 28 gynodioecious populations o

Cross-pollination of two specialties: potential repurposing of cancer and cardiovascular drugs for the benefit of the other.

Despite advancements in treatment, cancer and cardiovascular disease remain the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in developed nations. Cancer therapies have led to improved cancer-specific outcomes at the potential risk of cardiotoxicity. Additionally, basic and translational research have demonstrated a common shared pathophysiology of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Recent clinical research has suggested a potential role of repurposing cancer and cardiovascular medications for the treatment of each other. This narrative review aims to review and examine current literature of repu

Diesel exhaust and ozone adversely affect pollinators and parasitoids within flying insect communities.

The effects of air pollution on human and animal health, and on the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems, are wide-ranging. This potentially includes the disruption of valuable services provided by flying insects (e.g. pollination and biological control). However, quantifying the extent of this disruption requires a clearer understanding of insect community responses at field-scale. By elevating diesel exhaust and ozone (O3) pollutants, individually and in combination, over two summers, we investigated the field-scale effects of air pollution on the abundance and diversity of flying insects f
