Triton X-100 improves the reactivity and selectivity of sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron toward tetrabromobisphenol A: Implications for groundwater and soil remediation.

Sulfidized nanoscale zerovalent iron (SNZVI) with improved reactivity and selectivity has shown great potential for environmental remediation. However, it is unclear if SNZVI could be applied for the remediation of soil washing solution, and how a soil-washing surfactant affects the reactivity and selectivity of SNZVI. Here, we assess the impact of Triton X-100 (TX-100) on the reactivity and selectivity of a sulfidized commercial NZVI toward tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). While sulfidation of NZVI improved its reactivity and electron efficiency toward TBBPA, TX-100 could further improve these

Inhibition of human placental aromatase activity by hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs).

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as flame retardants in many different polymers, resins and substrates. Due to their widespread production and use, their high binding affinity to particles, and their lipophilic properties, several PBDE congeners can bioaccumulate in the environment. As a result, PBDEs and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PBDEs) have been detected in humans and various wildlife samples, such as birds, seals, and whales. Furthermore, certain OH-PBDEs and their methoxylated derivatives (MeO-PBDEs) are natural products in the marine environment. Recently, o

Role of Emerging Environmental Risk Factors in Thyroid Cancer: A Brief Review.

Environmental factors are recognized as risk factors of thyroid cancer in humans. Exposure to radiation, both from nuclear weapon or fallout or medical radiation, and to some organic and inorganic chemical toxicants represent a worldwide public health issue for their proven carcinogenicity. Halogenated compounds, such as organochlorines and pesticides, are able to disrupt thyroid function. Polychlorinated biphenyls and their metabolites and polybrominated diethyl ethers bind to thyroid, transport proteins, replace thyroxin, and disrupt thyroid function as phthalates and bisphenolates do, highl

Determination of brominated flame retardants in Jukskei River catchment area in Gauteng, South Africa.

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are considered to be environmental pollutants due to their toxicity, persistence and ubiquity in the environment. Little information is known about the presence of brominated flame retardants in South Africa's water systems. Therefore, this study examined and compared different extraction methods (liquid-liquid (LL) vs. solid phase (SP) for water, Soxhlet extraction (SE) vs. ultrasonic for sediment) for extraction efficiencies in the determination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) in water and sediment from Jukskei

The q-RASPR approach for predicting the property and fate of persistent organic pollutants.

This study presents a quantitative read-across structure-property relationship (q-RASPR) approach that integrates the chemical similarity information used in read-across with traditional quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models. This novel framework is applied to predict the physicochemical properties and environmental behaviors of persistent organic pollutants, specifically polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). By utilizing a curated dataset and incorporating similarity-based descriptors, the q-RASPR approach improves the accuracy of pr

Reproductive outcomes among women exposed to a brominated flame retardant in utero.

The authors studied 194 women exposed to polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) in utero when their mothers consumed products accidentally contaminated in Michigan in 1973. Generalized estimating equations were used to examine the effect of in utero PBB exposure on adult pregnancy-related outcomes. Compared to those with the lowest exposure (≤1 ppb), those with mid-range (>1-3.16 ppb) and high (≥3.17 ppb) PBB exposure had increased odds of spontaneous abortion with wide confidence intervals (odds ratio [OR] = 2.75, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.64-11.79, OR = 4.08, 95% CI = 0.94-17.70; respectively

Effects and underlying mechanisms of tetrabromobisphenol A on glucose and lipid metabolism in goldfish.

Fish, one of the most important vertebrates on Earth, are susceptible to glucose and lipid metabolism disorders. Glucose and lipid metabolism in fish are sensitive to environmental contamination; however, the effects of emerging pollutants, such as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), on these critical processes remain unclear. In this study, the effects and underlying mechanisms of TBBPA on glucose and lipid metabolism were evaluated using goldfish as a representative. Our research showed that in addition to excessive hepatic lipid deposition, TBBPA-exposed goldfish exhibited significantly higher l

Biotransformation of Tetrabromobisphenol A and Its Analogs by Selected Gut Bacteria Strains: Implications for Human Health.

Knowledge of the biotransformation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its related contaminants by human gut microbiota (GM) remains unexplored. Here, TBBPA and its four analogs were incubated with mixed GM strains, and nine rhamnosylated or debrominated transformation products (TPs) were discovered. Remarkably, rhamnosylation was identified as a common and unique microbial transformation pathway for these contaminants, and six of the seven rhamnosylated TPs were reported for the first time. Additionally, a kinetic transformation study also showed a rapid and strong bioaccumulation of TBBPA a

Tetrabromobisphenol A exerts thyroid disrupting effects but has little overt impact on postnatal brain development and neurobehaviors in mice.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is a widely used brominated flame retardant. There is evidence showing that TBBPA can exert thyroid disrupting effects in mammals, but different results were also reported, along with inconsistent reports regarding its neurotoxicity. Here, we investigated thyroid disrupting effects and neurotoxicity of TBBPA (5, 50, 500 µg/(kg·day)) to male mice following maternal and direct exposure through drinking water, with the anti-thyroid drug propylthiouracil (PTU) as the positive control. On postnatal day (PND) 15, we expectedly observed severe thyroid compensatory hyperp

Study on the Biomolecular Competitive Mechanism of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Their Derivatives on Thyroid Hormones.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used brominated flame retardants. PBDEs and their derivatives, hydroxylated PBDEs (OH-PBDEs), can bind to hormone receptors and impact hormone secretion, transportation, and metabolism, leading to endocrine disruption and the development of various diseases. They have particularly strong interference effects on thyroid hormones. This study used decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209); 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47); and 6-OH-BDE-47 as representative compounds of PBDEs and their derivatives, OH-PBDEs. Persulfate activation with sodium alginate/sulfide coated iron nanoparticles for degradation of tetrabromobisphenol a in soil.

The accumulation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in soil posed a serious threat to ecosystem and human health. Sodium alginate/sulfide coated iron nanoparticles (SA@S-Fe NPs) was synthesized by a two-step modification of Fe NPs prepared with tung tree leaves extracting solution, and utilized as a persulfate (PS) activator to degrade TBBPA in soil. Response surface methodology (RSM) optimization showed a theoretical maximum TBBPA degradation reaching 99.79% at the 34.28 °C, SA@S-Fe NPs and PS additions of 3.57 g kg-1 and 36.35 mM, respectively.
