Exploratory analysis of the presence of 14 carbonyl compounds in bottled mineral water in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers.

Carbonyl compounds (CCs) can migrate from bottles to mineral water because of plastic degradation. An exploratory analysis of the presence a significant number of CCs (14) in bottled mineral water with and without gas in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers was performed using ultra-fast liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UFLC-MS). The data from the analysis was submitted to chemometric treatment (principal component analysis, PCA). Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzaldehyde were found in all samples (0.07-125 ng mL-1). Acrolein and acetone were present in 81% and 75%

A single oral exposure to polyethylene terephthalate microplastics causes mild metabolic and gastrointestinal disruption: dose and sex determinants.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics, derived from consumer products such as plastic bottles and clothing, are pervasive in the environment with documented detection in human arteries and brains among other tissues, although their health impacts remain unclear. This study evaluated the biological effects of a single oral exposure to PET microplastics in female and male rats. Three-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed once via oral gavage to sterile water vehicle, or 5 mg/kg (low PET), or 50 mg/kg (high PET) of PET microplastics derived from cryomilling of plastic nurdles. Impact of polyethylene terephthalate and polylactic acid nanoplastics on cellular uptake and lipid metabolism in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes.

Hazards of nanoplastics (NPls) have recently garnered concern because of their tiny size and widespread existence in the environment and daily life. Evidence indicates that the frequently used model particle polystyrene NPls can accumulate in adipose tissues of mice and disrupt lipid metabolism, which is a potential obesogen. However, NPl uptake mechanisms and their potential interference with energy homeostasis of adipocytes by other NPl types are still unknown. In this study, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA)-NPls which were shown to abundantly be released from plast

Breathable and wearable graphene/waterborne polyurethane coated regenerated polyethylene terephthalate fabrics for motion sensing and thermal therapy.

The functional utilization of recycled polymers has emerged as a current prominent and timely subject. Flexible wearable devices with high sensitivity to conductivity have garnered significant attention in the fields of human healthcare monitoring and personal heat management. One significant obstacle that needs to be addressed is the simultaneous maintenance of both sensing functionality and durability in composite fabrics. In this paper, a collection of durable, breathable, and flexible smart fabric was produced using the scratch coating method. The fabrics were created by utilizing a regene

Effects of electron beam sterilization on polyethylene terephthalate: Physico-chemical modifications and formation of non-volatile organic extractables.

Our investigations hereby involve the effects of ionizing radiation as a sterilization method, and especially electron beams, on a medical grade Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). Ionizing radiations are known to induce free radicals formation in the polymer that will then either degrade or crosslink, depending on its chemical nature, ionizing type and irradiation atmosphere (Charlesby, 1967; Dole, 1972 and Dole, 1973). The evaluation of packaging material modifications under radiation sterilization is of great interest and the objective of our paper is to focus on both PET volume modifications

Surface-transformed osteoinductive polyethylene terephthalate scaffold as a dual system for bone tissue regeneration with localized antibiotic delivery.

Multifunctional scaffolds have recently attained superior significance in tissue regeneration due to combinational activity profile that is usually accomplished by separate sequential therapy. Here, we present a dual system comprised of surface-phosphorylated PET fibrous matrix coated with ciprofloxacin-impregnated biodegradable polymer poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) aiming at regeneration of bone tissue deprived of bacterial infections, particularly osteomyelitis. The ATR, XPS and FESEM/EDX results provided confirmative evidences for surface phosphorylation of PET and in situ coating of the

Right carotid-cutaneous fistula and right carotid pseudoaneurysm formation secondary to a chronically infected polyethylene terephthalate patch.

Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains the treatment for significant carotid stenosis and stroke prevention. Approximately 100,000 CEAs are performed in the United States every year. Randomized trials have demonstrated an advantage of patch carotid angioplasty over primary closure. Complications from patches include thrombosis, transient ischemic attack, stroke, restenosis, pseudoaneurysm (PA), and infection. PA after CEA is rare, with a reported average of 0.37% of cases. We describe an unusual case of PA after polyethylene terephthalate (PTFE) patching for CEA. An 88-year-old female with Alzhe

Characterization of bacterial nanocellulose cultivated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monomers via raman and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

The potential of Komagataeibacter (K.) sucrofermentans to valorize polyethylene terephthalate (PET) monomers - ethylene glycol (EG) & disodium terephthalate (Na2-TPA) - and glucose into bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) membranes was investigated using Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Gravimetric analysis indicated higher BNC yields for K. sucrofermentans nurtured with EG (2.54 g L− 1) compared to pure glucose (2.00 g L− 1) and TPA (1.54 g L− 1). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed that BNC derived from glucose had a dense interconnected fibrillar matrix with

High-fat diet primes vulnerability to polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastic toxicity via the gut microbiota-metabolism axis.

This study investigated whether a high-fat diet (HFD) acts as a priming factor that increases intestinal susceptibility to polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics (PET-NPs, 100 nm, 25 mg/kg/d). After a 12-week combined exposure in mice, HFD priming potentiated the deleterious effects of PET-NPs on intestinal structure and function. Compared to HFD alone, the combined exposure (HFD + PET-NPs) exacerbated intestinal barrier injury, as evidenced by reduced tight junction proteins (Claudin-1, Occludin, and ZO-1), increased permeability, and disrupted histoarchitecture. These mice also exhibited en

Environmentally relevant polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics induce functional and oxidative alterations in sheep placental cells In vitro.

Ruminants are among the livestock most at risk of microplastics (MPs) exposure due to the ingestion of contaminated forage, particularly with polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Yet, despite this high risk, the potential effects of microplastics on reproductive function in these species remain largely unknown. Here, we studied how environmentally relevant PET-MPs impact placental functionality and cellular responses in an in vitro sheep model. First, virgin PET was mechanically processed through progressive milling and sieving to obtain two fractions of 20-50 μm or <20 μm, which were characteris

Nanoarchitectonics of ZnFe-Layered Double Hydroxide Catalysts for Valorization of Waste Polyethylene Terephthalate Bottles into Value-Added Products.

Human reliance on plastic has increased plastic waste generation. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the major commodity plastics used and shows long persistence in nature, causing environmental threats. To mitigate this problem of pollution, a highly efficient ZnFe-layered double hydroxide has been synthesized via the hydrothermal method for valorization of waste PET bottles to bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) by glycolysis. A comprehensive structural, compositional, morphological, and surface analysis characterizations were performed to get deep insights into its properties.

Chronic exposure to polyethylene terephthalate microplastics induces gut microbiota dysbiosis and disordered hepatic lipid metabolism in mice.

Despite the widespread presence of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET MPs) in the environment, their biotoxicity, target organs, and underlying toxicological mechanism remain poorly understood. In this study, irregularly shaped PET MPs resembling those commonly found in natural environment were selected. Mice were orally administered different amounts of PET MPs (0, 5, 50, and 500 μg/day) for 17 weeks, after which relevant pathological and biochemical indicators were assessed. The results confirmed, for the first time, that PET MPs can induce oxidative stress, lipid accumulation, an

Statistical Analysis of Large Format Additively Manufactured Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol with 30% Carbon Fiber Tensile Data.

In large format additive manufacturing (LFAM), a keener understanding of the relationship between the manufacture method and material temperature dependency is needed for the production of large polymer parts. Statistical analyses supported by material properties and a meso-structural understanding of LFAM are applied to elucidate tensile data trends. The data from LFAM polyethylene terephthalate glycol with 30% carbon fiber (CF) (PETG CF30%) panels (diagonal, horizontal, and vertical in the x-y print plane) and injection-molded specimens tensile tested at six different testing temperatures (r

Low-cost membrane from polyethylene terephthalate bottle waste for water purification and chromium removal: modification and application.

River water has become contaminated with numerous hazardous compounds due to the rapid rise in population and industry expansion. Due to unchecked population growth and the improper disposal of electroplating industrial waste, issues with river water filtration and the elimination of chromium contamination have developed. Various technologies have been developed to overcome these problems. One of the technologies that have been proposed until now is membrane technology. On the other hand, the waste from plastic bottles, which grows yearly and now weighs 381.73 million tons, can create thin fil

Novel Polyethylene Terephthalate Screw Sleeve Implant: Salvage Treatment in a Case of Spine Instability after Vertebroplasty Failure.

INTRODUCTION: The management of osteoporotic fractures is sometimes rather challenging for spinal surgeons, and considering the longer life expectancy induced by improved living conditions, their prevalence is expected to increase. At present, the approaches to osteoporotic fractures differ depending on their severity, location, and the patient's age. State-of-the-art treatments range from vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty to hardware-based spinal stabilization in which screw augmentation with cement is the gold standard. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 74-year-old man with an L5 osteop

Impact of Titanium Dioxide in the Mechanical Recycling of Post-Consumer Polyethylene Terephthalate Bottle Waste: Tensile and Fracture Behavior.

This work provides an experimental analysis regarding the fracture behavior of recycled opaque PET (rPET-O) containing titanium dioxide (TiO2) under plane stress conditions. For this purpose, a commercially post-consumer transparent colored/opaque PET flakes mix was processed using a semi-industrial extrusion calendering process. The manufactured rPET-O sheets had a TiO2 content of 1.45 wt.%. The mechanical and fracture properties of unaged and physically aged (1 year) samples were determined through uniaxial tensile experiments and the Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) methodology, respectivel

Thermal stability of polyethylene terephthalate food contact materials: formation of volatiles from retain samples and implications for recycling.

PET packaging materials have been tested for volatile content after exposure to high temperatures. Samples included laminates, bottles, and roasting bags, and were heated at 120 degrees C, 150 degrees C and 230 degrees C for 50 min, according to sample type. Volatiles released from the material were trapped on Tenax, identified by GC-MS and assessed against a 10 micrograms/kg migration threshold limit. Few volatiles were found for samples composed only of PET. Volatiles from laminates varied according to the sample structure, but the main substances identified were not related to PET, but prob

Co-exposure of polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastics with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances triggers immune dysregulation, apoptotic activation, and neurotoxicity.

Polyethylene terephthalate micro- and nanoplastics (PET-MNPs) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are prevalent and environmentally persistent substances that have been identified in drinking water, food, and biological tissues. PET-MNPs may act as vectors for PFOA, potentially enhancing its toxicity, and thus applicable to environmental and human health. Although PET-MNPs and PFOA toxicity has been examined separately, few studies have looked at their combined effects. This study investigates developmental toxicity related to PET-MNP and PFOA co-exposures in zebrafish larvae exposed to the envi
