Background/Objectives:Rumex obtusifolius L. (Polygonaceae) has been traditionally used to treat various disorders, including hepatic and gastrointestinal diseases. However, the phytochemical constituents of its roots and their potential protective effects against skeletal muscle atrophy remain poorly understood. This study aimed to isolate and characterize bioactive constituents from R. obtusifolius roots and evaluate their protective effects against dexamethasone (DEX)-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 myotubes. Methods: LC-MS-guided phytochemical investigation of the ethanol extract of R. obtu

BACKGROUND: Rumex crispus L. (Polygonaceae), known as "Labada" in Turkey, was reported to be used for the treatment of gynecological diseases such as postpartum complications and infertility in folk medicine. Earlier studies on R. crispus have shown that leaf, fruit and root extracts have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities and are used for the treatment of tumors in the uterus. The hypothesis of this study is that R. crispus may generate potential anti-adhesive activity against complex factors such as inflammation, oxidation and fibrosis.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the pote

The advent of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has escalated the exploration of novel antidiarrheal drugs. Persicaria vivipara is a perennial herb of the Polygonaceae family, located in high-elevation regions. The present study was designed to perform phytochemical analysis and investigate the in vivo and in silico antidiarrheal potential of a methanolic extract of Persicaria vivipara roots (MEPV). Phytochemical analysis was performed using GC-MS, and the extract was characterized by total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and anti-microbial activity analysis. For anti-diarrh

Persicaria perfoliata (L.) is an herbaceous medicinal plant belonging to the Polygonaceae family. The plant is distributed in Nepal, India, Japan, China, Russia, and Korea. The present study involved the analysis of plant secondary metabolites, synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using the plant, characterization, and exploration of antioxidant, antidiabetic, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities. Among six different solvent extracts, the methanol extract displayed the highest total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of 68.61 ± 0.57 mg GAE/g and 40.69 ± 5.0 mg QE

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Polygonum multiflorum (Thunb.) (PMT) is a member of Polygonaceae. Traditional Chinese medicine considers that the processed PMT can tonify liver, nourish blood and blacken hair. In recent years, the processed PMT and its active ingredients have significant therapeutic effects on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis and liver cancer.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The main purpose of this review is to provide a critical appraisal of the existing knowledge on the clinical application, hepatoprotective pharmacology an

BACKGROUND: In traditional food systems, especially those of rural populations around the world, wild food plants remain crucial. These resources need to be urgently documented to lay the foundations for sustainable livelihoods and food security.
METHODS: In the present field study, we gathered information about wild food plants and mushrooms consumed by four ethnic groups (Turis, Khushis, Hazaras, and Christians) living in Kurram District, NW Pakistan, by conducting semi-structured interviews and holding group discussions.
RESULTS: A total of 57 wild edible plants and mushrooms were reporte

The Himalayan region is recognized as one of the world's major biodiversity hotspots due to its remarkable altitudinal variation, high species richness, and exceptional endemism. Despite its ecological significance, the endemic flora of the western Himalayas remains insufficiently explored at the molecular level. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of multiple nuclear and chloroplast DNA barcode loci (ITS2, rbcL, trnH-psbA, trnA, trnV, rpoB, ycf3, and rbcLa) for the identification and phylogenetic assessment of 32 endemic and threatened plant species representing 31 genera and 24 fami

BACKGROUND: Renal fibrosis is the final common pathological feature of various chronic kidney diseases (CKD). Despite recent advances, development of new treatments strategy is needed. Emodin (EMO), an important ingredient of Chinese medicine, rhubarb (Polygonaceae Rheum palmatum l.), has been reported to inhibit the development of renal fibrosis effectively. However, the poor oral bioavailability of EMO and the insufficient monotherapy therapy compromise its efficacy.
PURPOSE: In order to enhance renal fibrosis therapy of emodin, an innovative combination therapy based on deoxycholic acid-ch

The current research was designed to evaluate the phytochemical contents, cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity of Emex spinosa extracts. The different plant extracts and Aloe-emodin glucoside were screened using the colorimetric MTT method (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazo-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl- tetrazolium bromide) assay to test their in vitro cytotoxic activity against HepG2, MCF-7, Caco-2 and HCT. The clinically used anticancer drug doxorubicin was used as standard for comparative purposes. Anthraquinones (Aloe-emodin-O-glucoside, Emodin and nataloin (1, 2, 8-trihydroxy, 6-methyl, 10-anthrone-C-glucoside

Plants vital for ecosystem sustenance are highly vulnerable to climate change (CC) due to their immobility. This study examined the effects of CC on the flowering phenology of indigenous wild flora in Tehsil Bhimber of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Pakistan. Five key climatic factors-maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, humidity, soil moisture and solar radiation-were analyzed to assess these impacts. In this study, 228 plant species were used and explored for primary data collection using quadrate method during years 2018-to-2020. The meta-data of climatic changes for previous 30 w

Xiao Cheng Qi (XCQ) decoction, an ancient Chinese herbal mixture, has been used in treating slow-transit constipation (STC) for years. The underlying action mechanism in relieving the clinical symptoms is unclear. Several lines of evidence point to a strong link between constipation and gut microbiota. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and microbial metabolites have been shown to affect 5-HT synthesis by activating the GPR43 receptor localized on intestinal enterochromaffin cells, since 5-HT receptors are known to influence colonic peristalsis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the eff

In this research antidiabetic, analgesic and antiulcer potential of traditional ethnomedicinal plant: Emex spinosa (L.) Campd. (Family Polygonaceae) was evaluated by extracting its phytoconstituents using methanol (MeOH) solvent through maceration protocol. The quantitative phytochemical analysis of the extract revealed flavonoids were highest in leaf extract (15.63±0.93 mg/mL) and with (11.5±0.57 mg/mL) in stem. Alkaloids and tanins were also present in the samples in various conc. while saponins were absent. To confirm pharmaceutical potential of plant against ulcer, diabetes and analgesic i
