Experimental evidence of contamination driven shrimp population dynamics: Susceptibility of populations to spatial isolation.

Contamination is likely to affect the composition of an ecological landscape, leading to the rupture of ecological connectivity among habitats (ecological fragmentation), which may impact on the distribution, persistence and abundance of populations. In the current study, different scenarios within a spatially heterogeneous landscape were simulated in the Heterogeneous Multi-Habitat Assay System (HeMHAS) to evaluate the potential effect that contamination (copper at 0.5 and 25 μg/L) might have on habitat selection by the estuarine shrimp Palaemon varians in combination with two other ecologica

Contrasting dynamics of Bartonella spp. in cyclic field vole populations: the impact of vector and host dynamics.

Many zoonotic disease agents are transmitted between hosts by arthropod vectors, including fleas, but few empirical studies of host-vector-microparasite dynamics have investigated the relative importance of hosts and vectors. This study investigates the dynamics of 4 closely related Bartonella species and their flea vectors in cyclic populations of field voles (Microtus agrestis) over 3 years. The probability of flea infestation was positively related to field vole density 12 months previously in autumn, but negatively related to more recent host densities, suggesting a dilution effect. The 4

Orbitofrontal value dynamics and striatal population geometry during interruption of automatic behavior.

A core feature of cognitive control is the ability to interrupt behaviors that conflict with current goals. Disorders impairing this ability involve abnormal interactions between the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and the caudate nucleus (CdN). However, how these regions normally interact to interrupt automatic behaviors remains unknown. To find out, we trained monkeys on a decision task that created a conflict between competing value representations, thus evoking an automatic-then-controlled response pattern that provided a window into how initial responses are interrupted and overridden. Longitudinal dynamics of gene expression and metabolomics in an aging population cohort.

Multiomic profiling provides a comprehensive physiological overview at the molecular level, but understanding of its spatiotemporal dynamics remains limited in human populations. We profiled longitudinal whole-blood gene expression and metabolite levels in 335 females over 8 years. Levels of 5061 genes and 181 metabolites changed over time, with individual trajectories often diverging from population-level trends. Longitudinally variable genes showed cell type specificity and enrichment for aging-relevant pathways, including cardiometabolic and neurodegenerative disorders. Longitudinal traject

Emergent population dynamics of random walkers with cooperative reproduction and spatial selection.

We extend the N branching Brownian motions model of population invasion to higher-order asexual reproduction. Increasing reproduction order leads to qualitative changes: Invasion fronts generically cease to exist beyond binary reproduction, and in the binary case itself, their speed becomes diffusion independent. Ternary reproduction shows critical behavior, with collapse into a strongly localized "invasion bullet" in the supercritical regime, diffusive spreading in the subcritical regime, and a continuous family of fronts at criticality. These results suggest that the dominance of division an

Modeling, Analysis, and Optimal Control of Leukemic Cell Population Dynamics Under Therapy.

Building upon the ODE model describing the dynamics of healthy and leukemic cells introduced in Kumar et al. (2024); Stiehl and Marciniak-Czochra (2012), we propose an extended framework that incorporates a control variable representing the effects of chemotherapy. This extension aims to provide a more refined mathematical basis for investigating anti-cancer strategies. First, we perform a stability analysis of the equilibria associated with healthy and leukemic states, partly estimated from clinical data. This analysis reveals a complex structure, including the emergence of a continuum of coe

Latent neural population dynamics underlying breathing, opioid-induced respiratory depression and gasping.

Breathing is vital and must be concurrently robust and flexible. This rhythmic behavior is generated and maintained within a rostrocaudally aligned set of medullary nuclei called the ventral respiratory column (VRC). The rhythmic properties of individual VRC nuclei are well known, yet technical challenges have limited the interrogation of the entire VRC population simultaneously. Here we characterize over 15,000 medullary units using high-density electrophysiology, opto-tagging and histological reconstruction. Population dynamics analysis reveals consistent rotational trajectories through a lo

HIV transmission dynamics and population-wide drug resistance in rural South Africa.

Despite expanded antiretroviral therapy (ART) in South Africa, HIV-1 transmission persists. Integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTI) and long-acting injectables offer potential for superior viral suppression, but pre-existing drug resistance could threaten their effectiveness. In a community-based study in rural KwaZulu-Natal, prior to widespread INSTI usage, we enroled 18,025 individuals to characterise HIV-1 drug resistance and transmission networks to inform public health strategies. HIV testing and reflex viral load quantification were performed, with deep sequencing (20% variant thres

Conserved Population Dynamics in the Cerebro-Cerebellar System between Waking and Sleep.

Despite the importance of the cerebellum for motor learning, and the recognized role of sleep in motor memory consolidation, surprisingly little is known about neural activity in the sleeping cerebro-cerebellar system. Here, we used wireless recording from primary motor cortex (M1) and the cerebellum in three female monkeys to examine the relationship between patterns of single-unit spiking activity observed during waking behavior and in natural sleep. Across the population of recorded units, we observed similarities in the timing of firing relative to local field potential features associated

Fine-scale heterogeneity in population density predicts wave dynamics in dengue epidemics.

The spread of dengue and other arboviruses constitutes an expanding global health threat. The extensive heterogeneity in population distribution and potential complexity of movement in megacities of low and middle-income countries challenges predictive modeling, even as its importance to disease spread is clearer than ever. Using surveillance data at fine resolution from Rio de Janeiro, we document a scale-invariant pattern in the size of successive epidemics following DENV4 emergence. Using surveillance data at fine resolution following the emergence of the DENV4 dengue serotype in Rio de Jan

Population Dynamics of Escherichia coli Causing Bloodstream Infections over Extended Time Periods.

Escherichia coli is a leading cause of community-acquired and health care-associated bloodstream infections (BSIs) worldwide. Limited information is available regarding the changes in population dynamics of human E. coli over extended time periods, especially among nonbiased E. coli isolates in large well-defined geographical regions. Coque and colleagues (I. Rodríguez, A. S. Figueiredo, M. Sousa, S. Coinfection dynamics of heroin transmission and HIV infection in a single population.

We propose a model of a joint spread of heroin use and HIV infection. The unique disease-free equilibrium always exists and it is stable if the basic reproduction numbers of heroin use and HIV infection are both less than 1. The semi-trivial equilibrium of HIV infection (heroin use) exists if the basic reproduction number of HIV infection (heroin use) is larger than 1 and it is locally stable if and only if the invasion number of heroin use (HIV infection) is less than 1. When both semi-trivial equilibria lose their stability, a coexistence equilibrium occurs, which may not be unique. We compa

Factors Affecting Population Dynamics of Thrips Vectors of Soybean vein necrosis virus.

Thrips-infesting soybeans were considered of minor economic importance, but recent evidence of their ability to transmit a newly identified soybean virus, Soybean vein necrosis virus (SVNV), has raised their profile as pests. Season-long surveys were conducted using suction traps to determine the effects of temperature and precipitation on the spatiotemporal patterns of three vector species of SVNV, Neohydatothrips variabilis (Beach) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (soybean thrips), Frankliniella tritici (Fitch) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) (eastern flower thrips), and Frankliniella fusca (Hinds) (Thys

Modelling Anopheles gambiae s.s. Population Dynamics with Temperature- and Age-Dependent Survival.

Climate change and global warming are emerging as important threats to human health, particularly through the potential increase in vector- and water-borne diseases. Environmental variables are known to affect substantially the population dynamics and abundance of the poikilothermic vectors of disease, but the exact extent of this sensitivity is not well established. Focusing on malaria and its main vector in Africa, Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto, we present a set of novel mathematical models of climate-driven mosquito population dynamics motivated by experimental data suggesting that in An.

Population dynamics of Armigeres subalbatus (Diptera: Culicidae) across a temperate altitudinal gradient.

Understanding the impacts of weather fluctuations, and environmental gradients, on the abundance of vectors is fundamental to grasp the dynamic nature of the entomological risk for disease transmission. The mosquito Armigeres subalbatus (Coquillet) is a common vector of filariasis. Nevertheless, its population dynamics have been relatively poorly studied. Here, we present results from a season long study where we studied spatio-temporal abundance patterns of Ar. subalbatus across the altitudinal gradient of Mt. Konpira in Nagasaki, Japan. Spatially, we found that abundance of adult Ar. subalba

Quantifying seasonal population fluxes driving rubella transmission dynamics using mobile phone data.

Changing patterns of human aggregation are thought to drive annual and multiannual outbreaks of infectious diseases, but the paucity of data about travel behavior and population flux over time has made this idea difficult to test quantitatively. Current measures of human mobility, especially in low-income settings, are often static, relying on approximate travel times, road networks, or cross-sectional surveys. Mobile phone data provide a unique source of information about human travel, but the power of these data to describe epidemiologically relevant changes in population density remains unc

Vector transmission heterogeneity and the population dynamics and control of lymphatic filariasis.

A long-standing gap in lymphatic filariasis epidemiology is quantifying the potential effect that heterogeneous infection processes occurring in the major mosquito vector genera may have on parasite transmission and control. Although previous studies have focussed on examining the forms of the density dependent mechanisms regulating larval infection in various mosquito genera, there has been little work done thus far in investigating how such differential processes might interact with density-dependent processes occurring in other stages of the parasite life cycle to influence overall transmis

Culex population dynamics and West Nile virus transmission in east-central Illinois.

Temporal changes in the abundance Culex restuans and Culex pipiens were monitored in east-central Illinois for over a decade using infusion-baited oviposition traps. The 2 species typically exhibited a seasonal shift in relative abundance with a mean crossover date (when the proportion of egg rafts from both species is equal) of August 10 or 11, depending on leap year, with a 95% confidence interval of +/- 10.7 days. The date of crossover was linearly related to the date of last spring frost and occurred on average about 123 days after the last spring frost. Despite the predictability of cross

Possible hybridization of Brazilian planorbid snails and its importance in population dynamics.

This study focuses on the possibility of experimental hybridization among host snail species for Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil, with morphological characterization of the hybrids found. By using albinism as a genetic marker, intraspecific crossbreedings were performed between two strains of each species involved, in addition to interspecific crossbreedings; the only viable crossbreeding was between pigmented Biomphalaria glabrata (Paulista, PE) and albino B. tenagophila (Joinville, SC), with the formation of F1 and F2 generations. All offspring in F1 displayed black eyes and a renal ridge on t
