Association between ABO and Rh blood groups and choroidal structural parameters in adult population.

BACKGROUND: The ABO and Rh blood group systems have been associated with various systemic and ocular diseases. The choroid, as the most vascularized ocular structure, plays a critical role in retinal health. The choroidal vascularity index (CVI) has emerged as arobust metric for evaluating choroidal structure. This study aimed to investigate the association between ABO and Rh blood groups and choroidal structural parameters, including CVI, in a healthy adult population. METHODS: This prospective study included 164 healthy participants who underwent comprehensive ophthalmologic examination, in

Engagement with the HCV care cascade among high-risk groups: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: HCV elimination requires a thorough understanding of the care cascade. A direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-era description of the care cascade has not been undertaken in Ontario, Canada's most populous jurisdiction. Our primary objective was to describe the current population-level care cascade in the general Ontario population and among key risk groups ─ baby boomers, immigrants, and individuals experiencing residential instability. The secondary objective was to identify predictors of engagement. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of Ontario residents undergoing H

U.S. Maternally linked birth records may be biased for Hispanics and other population groups.

PURPOSE: We sought to advance understanding of linkage error in U.S. maternally linked datasets and how the error might affect results of studies based on the linked data. METHODS: North Carolina birth and fetal death records for 1988-1997 were maternally linked (n=1,030,029). The maternal set probability, defined as the probability that all records assigned to the same maternal set do in fact represent events to the same woman, was used to assess differential maternal linkage error across race/ethnic groups. RESULTS: Maternal set probabilities were lower for records specifying Asian or Hisp

Detection of SEN virus in the general population and different risk groups in Slovakia.

Sera of 426 adult persons were examined to assess the prevalence of SEN virus (SENV) infection in Slovakia and to determine the importance of different risk factors for parenteral transmission. SENV prevalence was determined by the PCR method using primers of SENV-D and SENV-H strains. Positive results were found in 10 of 37 patients with acute hepatitis of unknown etiology, 7 of 38 with acute hepatitis B, 17 of 44 with chronic hepatitis B, 29 of 102 with chronic hepatitis C, 36 of 72 hemodialysis patients, 2 of 33 health care workers and 24 of 100 persons from the control group. Cluster analysis of schistosome-specific antibody responses partitions the population into distinct epidemiological groups.

Immuno-epidemiological studies in schistosomiasis continue to generate large amounts of immunology data, whose analysis requires sophisticated statistical approaches. Here cluster analysis, is used to explore the relationship between immune responses and observed epidemiological patterns of schistosome infection in two Zimbabwean communities. Analysis of cross-sectional antibody data (IgA, IgE, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4 and IgM directed against Schistosoma haematobium soluble egg antigen (SEA)) showed that cluster analysis partitioned the data into distinct epidemiological groups based on all sev

Immunity to poliomyelitis: situation in northern Italy and in some other European population groups.

The aim of the program to eradicate poliomyelitis is expected to be achieved in the space of very few years and therefore, as they approach this goal, countries find themselves faced with various problems to be tackled. Among these is the decision about how and when to stop polio vaccination, which also depends on seroepidemiological evaluations, necessary because of the possible persistence of circulating strains of poliovirus of vaccine origin which might continue even after the suspension of vaccination. For this reason, the results of seroepidemiological surveys carried out in some Europea

[Precancerous lesions of gastric cancer (I): incidence in 2 population groups: symptomatic and asymptomatic].

We analyzed 850 gastric biopsy specimens: 643 were obtained from patients with gastric symptoms, and 207 from apparently normal individuals. We evaluated the incidence of precancerous lesions (PL) of the stomach (chronic atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and gastric dysplasia) in both groups of patients (symptomatic and assymptomatic). We also studied the relationship between these lesions and diverse clinical and morphological parameters (age, sex, location and endoscopic findings). Our results indicate a higher incidence than expected of PL in an area of low risk of the gastric cance

The community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) procedure for population groups and individuals.

The FDI-WHO Joint Working Group 1 on periodontal diseases supports the use of the CPITN as an epidemiological screening procedure for periodontal treatment needs in populations and also, in a modified form for screening and monitoring of individuals by dental practitioners. The advantages of the CPITN procedure have become more evident following 7 years of development and field experience. This report reviews the CPITN procedure and describes in detail the use of the method for both purposes. Methods, clinical criteria and evaluation of the CPITN data are discussed. The CPITN is primarily a sc

Population study in Assam: ABO blood groups, haemoglobin E and G-6-PD deficiency.

An attempt has been made to give a comprehensive picture of occurrence of ABO blood groups, haemoglobin E and G-6-PD deficiency among certain representative populations of the two major racial groups--Mongoloids and Caucasoids--of Assam, India. The qualitative pattern of distribution of ABO gene frequencies shows a clear demarcation between these two major groups. The same is true in respect of HbE gene, too. The Mongoloids present high frequencies of this gene, while among the Caucasoids its frequency is comparatively much lower. With regard to G-6-PD deficiency the distinction between the tw

Evaluating the Diagnostic Paradigm for Group A and Non-Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis in the College Student Population.

BACKGROUND: Acute pharyngitis is a frequent illness presenting in outpatient settings. Antibiotics are only recommended for bacterial pharyngitis caused by group A β-hemolytic streptococci (GAS); however, infections with non-group A β-hemolytic streptococci (NGAS) have similar clinical presentations and are common in young adult populations. The objective of this study was to analyze the performance of a current (expert) diagnostic algorithm for GAS pharyngitis, the Centor score, and compare it to alternative models developed to predict GAS and NGAS in a college student population. METHODS: E

Marriage and Cancer Risk: A Contemporary Population-Based Study Across Demographic Groups and Cancer Types.

UNLABELLED: Marriage is consistently associated with earlier cancer diagnosis and improved survival, but its relationship to cancer incidence is less understood. We examined cancer risk by marital status across cancer sites, sex, race/ethnicity, and age using large-scale, population-based US data. We analyzed Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data from 12 states for adults ages ≥30 years, with denominators from the American Community Survey (2015-2022). Age-adjusted incidence rates were calculated, and negative binomial regression estimated incidence rate ratios (IRR) comparing never

Valuing health across groups: a cross-sectional population-based willingness-to-pay survey in Bhutan.

INTRODUCTION: Context-specific cost-effectiveness thresholds (CETs) informed by societal willingness to pay (WTP) are crucial for healthcare resource allocation in low- and middle-income countries. This study investigated WTP for health per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) in Bhutan. METHODS: A WTP survey was conducted alongside the 2023 National Health Survey in Bhutan, sampling 1869 households. Using contingent valuation, respondents assigned monetary values to three hypothetical scenarios: 1 year of cancer symptom-free life, 1 year of perfect health and 5 years of perfect health. We used
