Bridged Conductive Nanofibrous Membrane Overcoming the Porosity-Conductivity Trade-Off for Electrothermal Air Purification.

Emerging conductive porous materials hold remarkable promise for Joule-heating applications like electothermal filtration, smart textiles, and energy management due to their porous and conductive synergy. However, their development is constrained by a design trade-off between achieving high porosity for efficient flow transmission and maintaining a conductive network for effective charge transport. To overcome this, a bridged conductive nanofibrous membrane (BCNM) by linking polypyrrole-coated nanofibers via self-assembled polypyrrole nanowires is developed. This dual-state network establishes

Porosity Engineering and Functionalization of Hyper-Cross-Linked Polymers for Highly Selective CO2 Adsorption.

Selective carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture from industrial processes is vital for reducing emissions associated with fossil fuel combustion. Achieving both high CO₂ adsorption capacity and excellent CO₂/N₂ selectivity, however, remains a significant challenge. In this study, a novel strategy is introduced that integrates porosity engineering using various cross-linkers-dimethoxymethane (F), p-dichloroxylene (D), and dibromomethane (B)-with post-synthetic modifications to incorporate nitro (─NO₂) and amino (─NH₂) functional groups into the polymer matrix. Nitration of hyper-cross-linked polymer bas

Porosity controlled soya protein isolate-polyethylene oxide multifunctional dual membranes as smart wound dressings.

Multifunctional membranes S7P0.7, S7P3.0, and dual membranes composed of soya protein isolate (SPI) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were produced for wound dressing applications. The internal structure of the membranes was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to be homogeneous and coarser with a porous-like network. S7P3.0 showed the tensile strength of 0.78 ± 0.04 MPa. In the absence of antibiotics, the dual membrane (combination of S7P0.7 and S7P3.0) exhibited potential antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) bacteria.

Unlocking High Porosity: Post-Synthetic Solvothermal Treatment of Cu-Paddlewheel Based Metal-Organic Cages.

Metal-organic cages (MOCs) have garnered significant attention due to their unique discrete structures, intrinsic porosity, designability, and tailorability. However, weak inter-cage interactions, such as van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding can cause solid-state MOCs to lose structural integrity during desolvation, leading to the loss of porosity. In this work, a novel strategy to retain the permanent porosity of Cu-paddlewheel-based MOCs, enabling their use as heterogeneous catalysts is presented. Post-synthetic solvothermal treatments in non-coordinating solvents, mesitylene, and p-xyl

Compartmentalized Porosity in a Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework Enables High-Capacity C3H6/C2H4 Separation.

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are promising adsorbents for gas separation, yet capacity breakthroughs are frequently limited by a pore-architecture trade-off in which increased pore volume is accompanied by cavity expansion and weakened confinement. Herein, we report HOF-BUT-1, constructed from an unprecedented 8-connected linker, resulting in compartmentalized porosity. This HOF thus combines high porosity (pore volume = 0.95 cm3/g) with a small largest cavity diameter of 7.6 Å. Enabled by its balanced pore structure, HOF-BUT-1 exhibits a record-high propylene uptake of 8.83 mmol/

Porosity Engineering Within Ni─N─C Hollow Spheres for Ampere-Level CO2 Reduction Electrocatalysis.

CO2 electroreduction typically requires large overpotentials to sustain high reaction rates, which at current densities approaching 1 A cm-2 inevitably intensify competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), making it difficult to simultaneously sustain high product selectivity (>95%). In this study, hollow Ni─NC (H-Ni-NC) was synthesized using nanoscale silica sphere templates and atomic Zn as a sacrificial pore-former within the carbon shell. The optimized H-Ni-NC achieves a current density of -1.0 A cm-2 with over 95% CO Faradaic efficiency in a flow cell. The high performance was

Dual-Frequency Ultrasound Enhances Cavitation of Microdroplets for Controlled Scaffold Porosity in Tissue Engineering.

The development of porous scaffolds with tunable mechanical and structural properties is essential for advancing tissue engineering strategies. In this study, we present a noninvasive, adjustable method for generating porous collagen scaffolds by utilizing micron-sized phase-shift droplets in combination with dual-frequency ultrasound. These microdroplets, generated via a microfluidic chip and composed of a liquid perfluoropentane core stabilized by a phospholipid shell, were embedded within collagen hydrogels and served as ultrasound-responsive cavitation nuclei. A 3.5 MHz imaging transducer

Vapor-induced porosity in graphene/PDMS: a scalable route to high-performance pressure sensors.

In the present paradigm of flexible and wearable technologies, piezoresistive sensors hold immense promise as e-skin in sensing applications. Introducing porosity in these sensors elevates the performance multi-fold. However, fabrication of porous piezoresistive sensors is complicated, energy-intensive and cost-ineffective, negating their pertinent advantages. We present a new method of developing porous, thin films based piezoresistive sensors by utilizing the inherent vaporability of ethanol to introduce controlled porosity in graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)/ polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomp

Sub-5 Ångstrom Porosity Tuning in Calixarene-Derived Porous Liquids via Supramolecular Complexation Construction.

Sub-Ångstrom-level porosity engineering, which is appealing in gas separations, has been demonstrated in solid carbon, polymer, and framework materials but rarely achieved in the liquid phase. In this work, a gas molecular sieving effect in the liquid phase at sub-5 Ångstrom scale is created via sophisticated porosity tuning in calixarene-derived porous liquids (PLs). Type II PLs are constructed via supramolecular complexation between the sodium salts of calixarene derivatives and crown ether solvents. The chemical structure variation and assembly behavior of the porous host upon PL constructi

Instrumented micro/macroindentation of porosity defects in laser powder bed fusion 316L stainless steel.

Porosity defects and their effect on mechanical properties remain a concern in metals-based laser powder bed fusion, even for optimized process parameters. Instrumented micro/macroindentation with Berkovich and spherical tips to forces of 50 N and 150 N, respectively, were used to characterize three levels of porosity (fully dense, 1%, and 4%) created by decreasing and increasing the hatch spacing and two levels of heat treatments (stress-relieved and solution annealed). The spherical indentation data were converted to effective stress-strain curves along with an estimated modulus and yield st

Automated Fiber Diameter and Porosity Measurements of Plasma Clots in Scanning Electron Microscopy Images.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is a powerful, high-resolution imaging technique widely used to analyze the structure of fibrin networks. Currently, structural features, such as fiber diameter, length, density, and porosity, are mostly analyzed manually, which is tedious and may introduce user bias. A reliable, automated structural image analysis method would mitigate these drawbacks. We evaluated the performance of DiameterJ (an ImageJ plug-in) for analyzing fibrin fiber diameter by comparing automated DiameterJ outputs with manual diameter measurements in four SEM data sets with different

Menopause-Related Appendicular Bone Loss is Mainly Cortical and Results in Increased Cortical Porosity.

After menopause, remodeling becomes unbalanced and rapid. Each of the many remodeling transactions deposits less bone than it resorbed, producing microstructural deterioration. Trabecular bone is said to be lost more rapidly than cortical bone. However, because 80% of the skeleton is cortical, we hypothesized that most menopause-related bone loss and changes in bone microstructure are cortical, not trabecular in origin, and are the result of intracortical remodeling. Distal tibial and distal radial microstructure were quantified during 3.1 years (range, 1.5 to 4.5 years) of follow-up using hig

The porosity of the bone cement interface of 96 human femoral heads prepared for hip resurfacing.

PURPOSE: The porosity of the femoral head prepared for hip resurfacing has not been previously described. This is important as greater pore size increases the penetration of bone cement and excessive cement penetration can cause osteonecrosis. METHODS: 96 osteoarthritic femoral heads were harvested at total hip arthroplasty and prepared for hip resurfacing. The porosity of the bone cement interface in hip resurfacing was calculated from digitised black and white photographs using MatLab software. RESULTS: The mean porosity was 0.63. Increased porosity was associated with larger femoral heads

Tailoring porosity and surface functionalization in nanoporous anodic alumina rugate filters for enhanced interferometric biosensing.

The influence of porosity and surface functionalization strategies on the biosensing performance of nanoporous anodic alumina rugate filters (NAA-RFs) is systematically investigated using reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). Highly ordered NAA-RF structures were fabricated by sinusoidal anodization and subsequently tuned through controlled pore-widening processes to achieve different porosity levels. Structural and optical characterization confirmed the formation of modulated nanoporous architectures exhibiting well-defined Fabry-Pérot interference patterns and characteristic stop

High porosity PEG-based hydrogel foams with self-tuning moisture balance as chronic wound dressings.

A major challenge in chronic wound treatment is maintaining an appropriate wound moisture balance throughout the healing process. Wound dehydration hinders wound healing due to impeded molecule transport and cell migration with associated tissue necrosis. In contrast, wounds that produce excess fluid contain high levels of reactive oxygen species and matrix metalloproteases that impede cell recruitment, extracellular matrix reconstruction, and angiogenesis. Dressings are currently selected based on the relative amount of wound exudate with no universal dressing available that can maintain appr

Botox-induced muscle paralysis alters intracortical porosity and osteocyte lacunar density in skeletally mature rats.

Reduced mechanical loading can lead to disuse osteoporosis, resulting in bone fragility. Disuse models report macroscopic bone loss due to muscle inactivity and immobilization, yet only recently has there been quantification of the effects of disuse on the vascular pores and osteocyte network, which are believed to play an important role in mechanotransduction via interstitial fluid flow. The goal of this study was to perform a high-resolution analysis of the effects of muscle inactivity on intracortical porosity and osteocyte lacunar density in skeletally mature rats. Muscle paralysis was ind

Increased intra-cortical porosity reduces bone stiffness and strength in pediatric patients with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disease occurring in one out of every 20,000 births. Although it is known that Type I collagen mutation in OI leads to increased bone fragility, the mechanism of this increased susceptibility to fracture is not clear. The aim of this study was to assess the microstructure of cortical bone fragments from patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) using polarized light microscopy, and to correlate microstructural observations with the results of previously performed mechanical compression tests on bone from the same source. Specimens of cortical bone w

Flow diversion of giant curved sidewall and bifurcation experimental aneurysms with very-low-porosity devices.

OBJECTIVE: Flow diverters (FDs) are increasingly used to treat difficult intracranial aneurysms. The objective of this study was to test whether treatment challenges posed by giant curved sidewall (cSW) and endwall bifurcation (EwB) aneurysms can be overcome with the use of very-low-porosity devices. METHODS: Large and giant EwB (n = 12) and cSW aneurysms (n = 5) were constructed in 17 dogs. EwB aneurysms were treated with 48 (n = 4), 64 (n = 4), or two overlapping 64-wire low-porosity devices (n = 4), whereas all cSW aneurysms were treated with single 64-wire devices. Estimation of diffusion parameters in functionalized silicas with modulated porosity. Part II: pore network modeling.

In this work, the pore structure of those five (5) silicas SiO2-X (see Part I) which have suffered gradual functionalization with functional groups X of increasing length (X = psi, [triple bond]Si-H, [triple bond]Si-CH2OH, [triple bond]Si-(CH2)3OH, [triple bond]Si-(CH2)11CH3), is modeled as a three-dimensional cubic network of cylindrical pores. Those hybrids organic-inorganic SiO2-X samples are characterized by different extent of pore blocking effects. The pores of samples are represented in a 9 x 9 x 9 lattice by the nodes as well the bonds that are interconnected in a so-called dual site-b
