Sex differences in post-exercise hypotension after a recreational beach tennis session in adults with controlled hypertension: a randomized crossover trial.

This study aimed to compare the effects of a single bout of beach tennis on post-exercise hypotension in men and women with hypertension. In this crossover trial, adults with hypertension were randomized into two experimental sessions: beach tennis and control sessions. For the beach tennis session, they warmed up with basic techniques for 5-min and played three matches lasting 12-min each, interspersed with 2-min recovery intervals. During the control session, the participants remained seated at rest without any exercise. Each protocol lasted for 45-min. Office blood pressure was assessed bef

Rehabilitation protocols in neonates undergoing primary nerve surgery for upper brachial plexus palsy: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical management is recommended in patients with severe neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) within the first 6 months of age to regain best possible function. Rehabilitation post-surgery remains relatively unexplored. This is a scoping review that explores, which rehabilitation modalities exist and how they vary for different microsurgical approaches in NBPP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted to include articles about upper trunk obstetric brachial plexus nerve microsurgery in pediatric patients that made mention of rehabilitation protocols. The aims

Early versus delayed rehabilitation treatment in hemiplegic patients with ischemic stroke: proprioceptive or cognitive approach?

BACKGROUND: Early/intensive mobilization may improve functional recovery after stroke but it is not clear which kind of "mobilization" is more effective. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and cognitive therapeutic exercise (CTE) are widespread applied in post-stroke rehabilitation but their efficacy and safety have not been systematically investigated. AIM: To compare PNF and CTE methods in a two different time setting (early versus standard approach) in order to evaluate different role of time and techniques in functional recovery after acute ischemic stroke. DESIGN: We design

Non-invasive detection of exercise-induced cardiac conduction abnormalities in sudden cardiac death survivors in the inherited cardiac conditions.

AIMS: Rate adaptation of the action potential ensures spatial heterogeneities in conduction across the myocardium are minimized at different heart rates providing a protective mechanism against ventricular fibrillation (VF) and sudden cardiac death (SCD), which can be quantified by the ventricular conduction stability (V-CoS) test previously described. We tested the hypothesis that patients with a history of aborted SCD due to an underlying channelopathy or cardiomyopathy have a reduced capacity to maintain uniform activation following exercise. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty individuals, with (n

Interstitial muscle lactate, pyruvate and potassium dynamics in the trapezius muscle during repetitive low-force arm movements, measured with microdialysis.

AIM: Local muscle metabolic responses to repetitive low-force contractions and to intense static contractions were studied by microdialysis in humans. METHODS: Microdialysate and electromyography (EMG) were sampled from the trapezius muscle, mixed venous blood samples were taken and perceived exertion was rated (0-9) before and during 20 min of standardized repetitive arm movement (REP), 60 min recovery (R1), and 10 min 90 degrees sustained arm position (SUS) at 20% maximum voluntary contraction, followed by 60 min recovery (R2) in six healthy male participants (28-33 years). RESULTS: Averag

Effects of Lower-Leg Fascial Flossing on Flexibility and Performance in Collegiate Distance Runners: Ultrasound Evaluation of Fascial Gliding.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance runners frequently experience repetitive loading that may contribute to reduced flexibility, impaired fascial gliding, and neuromuscular performance deficits, all of which may hinder recovery and increase overuse risk. Fascial flossing-a compressive myofascial technique-has gained attention as a potential intervention; however, evidence on its role in post-fatigue recovery remains limited. Hypothesis/Purpose: To determine whether lower-leg fascial flossing improves fascial gliding, flexibility, perceived tightness, and jump performance following running-induced fatigu

Analysis of associations between emotions and activities of drug users and their addiction recovery tendencies from social media posts using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Addiction to drugs and alcohol constitutes one of the significant factors underlying the decline in life expectancy in the US. Several context-specific reasons influence drug use and recovery. In particular emotional distress, physical pain, relationships, and self-development efforts are known to be some of the factors associated with addiction recovery. Unfortunately, many of these factors are not directly observable and quantifying, and assessing their impact can be difficult. Based on social media posts of users engaged in substance use and recovery on the forum Reddit, we empl

Comparison of cerebrovascular reactivity recovery following high-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training.

A common inclusion criterion when assessing cerebrovascular (CVR) metrics is for individuals to abstain from exercise for 12-24 hr prior to data collections. While several studies have examined CVR during exercise, the literature describing CVR throughout post-exercise recovery is sparse. The current investigation examined CVR measurements in nine participants (seven male) before and for 8 hr following three conditions: 45-min moderate-continuous exercise (at ~50% heart-rate reserve), 25-min high-intensity intervals (ten, one-minute intervals at ~85% heart-rate reserve), and a control day (30-

Decreased kinesiophobia with virtual embodiment for post-surgical knee rehabilitation: a randomized controlled trial.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures are prevalent, particularly among young athletes. Although ligament reconstruction is the gold standard treatment, the rehabilitation process is extensive and has high reinjury rates. Recovery is often hindered by muscle inhibition and psychological factors like kinesiophobia and associated fear of reinjury. Emerging evidence suggests that motor imagery and action observation could enhance rehabilitation outcomes. Immersive virtual reality (VR) offers a novel way to integrate these techniques, potentially accelerating recovery. In this parallel randomi

Wireless Suture Button Accessory Sensor for Intra- and Post-Operative Monitoring of Suture Loading in Soft Tissue Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Tensioning and relaxation of grafts in tendon and ligament reconstruction surgeries significantly influence operation success, yet there are no clinically available technologies that can effectively measure both graft tension intra-operatively and during post-surgical recovery and rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: To address the lack of an effective technology to measure graft tension intra-operatively and post-operatively, an implantable sensor was developed to provide real-time suture loading biofeedback both during reconstruction for surgeons and during rehabilitation exercises for ph

Self-Administered Relaxation Techniques Improving Postconcussive Mood Symptoms in an Appalachian Population.

OBJECTIVES: Concussions are one of the most frequent pediatric injuries, especially for high school athletes. Many of the psychological sequalae from concussions go unnoticed and undertreated particularly in the rural setting. There is limited research on optimizing recovery for these patients; however, newer studies are beginning to show the utilization of deep breathing exercises. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of self-administered relaxation techniques for postconcussive mood symptoms in an Appalachian population. METHODS: Patients' charts (N = 308) from a rural specialty co

Anesthesia management for patients with Prader-Willi syndrome undergoing bariatric surgery: a single-center retrospective case series study.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from abnormalities on chromosome 15q11.2-q13. These genetic anomalies pose significant challenges in anesthetic management when PWS patients undergo bariatric surgery. METHODS: We present five instances of anesthetic management in three PWS patients who underwent bariatric surgery under general anesthesia supplemented with nerve block techniques. RESULTS: Obesity, sleep apnea, airway ventilatory dysfunction, and hypotonia were the primary challenges faced by PWS patients in our study. We implemented speci

Rehabilitation of Chronic Stroke Using Neurofeedback, Functional Electrical Stimulation and Cerebrospinal Direct Current Stimulation.

This work presents the application of a rehabilitation protocol using a novel Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) technique, called cerebrospinal Direct Current Stimulation (csDCS), together with the use of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) based on Motor Imagery (MI) with Neurofeedback (NFB), and applying Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) plus the use of a pedal exerciser. This protocol uses the concept of Alternating Treatment Design (ATD), in which a chronic post-stroke subject is submitted to these techniques to recover his left hand and leg movements. The rehabilitation progress wa

Clinical observations on acute poliomyelitis.

During the years of the polio epidemics, most patients with the poliovirus had little or no paralysis. In those with paralytic polio, the extent of involvement of the anterior horn cells was often underestimated. Thus, patients with post-polio syndrome now often report that a limb was uninvolved; however, the original record will show clear evidence of initial paralysis that improved so that the patient no longer recognized the weakness. The epidemics were associated with great anxiety involving the patients, their families and all of society. Treatment was for the most part ineffective and wa

The short-term impact of the catheter ablation on noninvasive autonomic nervous system parameters in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a potentially potent modulator of the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation (AF), whereas the presence of AF can activate and alter the ANS. The catheter ablation of AF (AFCA) may cause the cardiac ANS dysfunction, whereas restoration of sinus rhythm or sympathovagal imbalance by AFCA can reverse this process. Our principal goal was to investigate the short-term effect of AFCA on ANS functions evaluated by noninvasive chronotropic (CI), resting heart rate (RHR), and heart rate recovery (HRR) indices. METHOD: A total of 45 patients
