Network Architecture of Verticality Processing in the Human Thalamus.

OBJECTIVE: Thalamic dysfunction in lesions or neurodegeneration may alter verticality perception and lead to postural imbalance and falls. The aim of the current study was to delineate the structural and functional connectivity network architecture of the vestibular representations in the thalamus by multimodal magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Seventy-four patients with acute unilateral isolated thalamic infarcts were studied prospectively with emphasis on the perception of verticality (tilts of the subjective visual vertical [SVV]). We used multivariate lesion-symptom mapping based on su

Structural and functional connectivity of the nondecussating dentato-rubro-thalamic tract.

The dentato-rubro-thalamic tract (DRTT) regulates motor control, connecting the cerebellum to the thalamus. This tract is modulated by deep-brain stimulation in the surgical treatment of medically refractory tremor, especially in essential tremor, where high-frequency stimulation of the thalamus can improve symptoms. The DRTT is classically described as a decussating pathway, ascending to the contralateral thalamus. However, the existence of a nondecussating (i.e. ipsilateral) DRTT in humans was recently demonstrated, and these tracts are arranged in distinct regions of the superior cerebellar

Functional impairment due to white matter ischemia after middle cerebral artery occlusion in cats.

We recorded regional cerebral blood flow, somatosensory evoked potentials, and auditory evoked potentials in the thalamic relay nuclei (ventral posterior lateral nucleus and medial geniculate body) and in the somatosensory and auditory cortices during and after 1 hour of transient left middle cerebral artery occlusion in nine cats. Regional cerebral blood flow was also measured in the thalamocortical tracts of five of these cats. Additionally, the integrity of thalamocortical connections was tested by retrograde labeling of the thalamic nuclei with horseradish peroxidase in eight cats (three o

Dorsal and ventral parts of thalamic nucleus submedius project to different areas of rat orbitofrontal cortex: A single neuron-tracing study using virus vectors.

The rodent orbitofrontal cortex is involved in a variety of cognitive and behavioral functions that require thalamic input to be successfully expressed. Although the thalamic nucleus submedius (Sm) is a major source of afferents to the orbitofrontal cortex, thalamocortical projection from the Sm has not been fully elucidated. In the present study, we first divided the rat Sm into dorsal and ventral parts according to the distribution of vesicular glutamate transporter 2-immunoreactive varicosities, which were somatosensory afferents from the brain stem. Subsequently we investigated dendritic a

Vestibular responses in the rhesus monkey ventroposterior thalamus. II. Vestibulo-proprioceptive convergence at thalamic neurons.

The vestibular thalamic relay in the Rhesus ventrobasal complex, identified in a previous field potential study (part I, Deecke et al., 1974), has now been investigated with neuronal recordings in the thalamus in order to clarify its functional role. In part I, short latency responses (2.5 msec) were found in the corner between VPL, VPM and VPI nuclei, largely including dorsal portions of the VPI nucleus. Field potentials of somewhat longer latency (4-5 msec) were recorded in VPL and in other thalamic nuclei, including the posterior nuclear group. Neuronal responses were recorded in thalamic n

Conserved patterns of functional organization between cortex and thalamus in mice.

Higher-order thalamic nuclei contribute to sensory processing via projections to primary and higher cerebral cortical areas, but it is unknown which of their cortical and subcortical inputs contribute to their distinct output pathways. We used subpopulation specific viral strategies in mice to anatomically and physiologically dissect pathways of the higher-order thalamic nuclei of the somatosensory and visual systems (the posterior medial nucleus and pulvinar). Employing a complementary optogenetics and electrical stimulation strategy, we show that synapses in cortex from higher-order thalamus

Localization of stereotactic targets by microrecordings of thalamic somatosensory evoked potentials.

To improve the localization of stereotactic targets, somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded from the thalamus and subthalamic area using a specially designed semimicroelectrode in 61 patients and a conventional "macroelectrode" in 17 patients. By means of the semimicroelectrode, median nerve stimulation evoked two distinct SEPs, consisting of a diphasic wave with a huge positivity restricted to the nucleus ventrocaudalis (Vc) and a triphasic wave of lower amplitude with a major negativity in the ventral part of the nucleus ventrointermedius (Vim) and nucleus ventrooralis posterio

Complex movement disorders following bilateral paramedian thalamic and bilateral cerebellar infarcts.

Complex movement disorders (CMD; including tremor, dystonias, choreoatheosis, and myoclonus) following infarcts in the posterior and posterolateral thalamic nuclei have been reported. This case of a 59-year-old man who developed CMD following bilateral paramedian and bilateral cerebellar infarcts illustrates the lack of anatomic specificity and the diverse pathophysiology which may underlie CMD.

Cortical and thalamic afferent connections of the insular and adjacent cortex of the rat.

Thalamic and cortical afferents to the insular and perirhinal cortex of the rat were investigated. Unilateral injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were made iontophoretically along the rhinal sulcus. HRP injections covered or invaded areas along the rhinal fissure from about the level of the middle cerebral artery to the posterior end of the fissure. The most anterior injection labeled a few cells in the mediodorsal nucleus. More posterior injections labeled neurons in the basal portion of the nucleus ventralis medialis, thus suggesting that this cortical region constitutes the rat's gus

Projection and innervation patterns of individual thalamic reticular axons in the thalamus of the adult rat: a three-dimensional, graphic, and morphometric analysis.

The gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic thalamic reticular nucleus (Rt), which carries matching topographical maps of both the thalamus and cortex and in which constituent cells can synaptically communicate between each other, is the major extrinsic source of thalamic inhibitions and disinhibitions. Whether all the Rt axonal projections into the thalamus are similarly organized and have common projection and innervation patterns are questions of great interest to further our knowledge of the functioning of the Rt. The present study provides architectural and morphometric data of individual, anterogr

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). Part I: thalamus and metathalamus.

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) is described and compared with that of other primates, particularly the macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta). In the vervet monkey, the thalamus is divided into six nuclear groups: anterior, midline, medial, dorsolateral, ventrolateral and posterior. The anterior nuclear group shows a regressive nucleus anterodorsalis and a poorly defined demarcation between the nuclei anteromedialis and anteroventralis. There is a large interthalamic adhesion in which the ventral region containing nuclei centralis medialis, interventralis and reuniens,

Thalamic projections to the posterior suprasylvian gyrus and the ventrally adjacent cortex in the cat traced with horseradish peroxidase.

The present study has been undertaken to elucidate the thalamic projections to the posterior suprasylvian gyrus (PSG) and the ventrally adjacent areas in the cat using retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. The posterior part of the PSG, area 19 b, receives fibers mainly from the dorsolateral part of the medial pulvinar nucleus, and a lesser number from the lateral pulvinar nucleus. It receives a few fibers from the inferior pulvinar nucleus and the medial interlaminar nucleus (NIM) of the lateral geniculate. The anterior part of the PSG, area 21 b, receives a large number of f

Specific invasion of occipital-to-frontal neocortical grafts by axons from the lateral posterior thalamic nucleus consecutive to neonatal lesion of the rat occipital cortex.

Previous work found that transplants of embryonic (E) day 16 occipital cortex placed into the frontal cortex of newborn hosts failed to receive input from visual-related nuclei of the host thalamus. The present study is aimed at determining the possible causes of the lack of visual-related thalamic input to these transplants. For that purpose, a retrograde neurotracer was injected into transplants of embryonic (E16) occipital origin which were placed into the frontal cortex of newborn rats with either intact or damaged occipital cortex. In rats with intact occipital cortex, occipital-to-fronta

Quantitative susceptibility mapping and a nonlinearly transformed atlas for targeting the ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus in a patient with tremor and thalamic hypertrophy: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: The ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) of the thalamus is a surgical target for treating various types of tremor. Because it is difficult to visualize the Vim using standard magnetic resonance imaging, the structure is usually targeted based on the anterior and posterior commissures. This standard targeting method is practical in most patients but not in those with thalamic asymmetry. The authors examined the usefulness of quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and transformed Vim atlas images to estimate the Vim localization in a patient with tremor and significant thalamic hyp

Connectomic analysis of unilateral dual-lead thalamic deep brain stimulation for treatment of multiple sclerosis tremor.

Tremor is a common symptom in multiple sclerosis and can present as a severe postural and action tremor, leading to significant disability. Owing to the diffuse and progressive nature of the disease, it has been challenging to characterize the pathophysiology underlying multiple sclerosis tremor. Deep brain stimulation of the ventralis intermedius and the ventralis oralis posterior thalamic nuclei has been used to treat medically refractory multiple sclerosis tremors with variable results. The aim of this study was to characterize multiple sclerosis tremor at the network level by applying mode

Parallel pathways of seizure generalization.

Generalized convulsive status epilepticus is a life-threatening emergency, because recurrent convulsions can cause death or injury. A common form of generalized convulsive status epilepticus is of focal onset. The neuronal circuits activated during seizure spread from the hippocampus, a frequent site of seizure origin, to the bilateral motor cortex, which mediates convulsive seizures, have not been delineated. Status epilepticus was initiated by electrical stimulation of the hippocampus. Neurons transiently activated during seizures were labelled with tdTomato and then imaged following brain s

White matter injury after neonatal encephalopathy is associated with thalamic metabolite perturbations.

BACKGROUND: Although thalamic magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy (MRS) accurately predicts adverse outcomes after neonatal encephalopathy, its utility in infants without MR visible deep brain nuclei injury is not known. We examined thalamic MRS metabolite perturbations in encephalopathic infants with white matter (WM) injury with or without cortical injury and its associations with adverse outcomes. METHODS: We performed a subgroup analysis of all infants recruited to the MARBLE study with isolated WM or mixed WM/cortical injury, but no visible injury to the basal ganglia/thalamus (BGT) or

Cortical projections of functionally identified thalamic trigeminovascular neurons: implications for migraine headache and its associated symptoms.

This study identifies massive axonal arbors of trigeminovascular (dura-sensitive) thalamic neurons in multiple cortical areas and proposes a novel framework for conceptualizing migraine headache and its associated symptoms. Individual dura-sensitive neurons identified and characterized electrophysiologically in first-order and higher-order relay thalamic nuclei were juxtacellularly filled with an anterograde tracer that labeled their cell bodies and processes. First-order neurons located in the ventral posteromedial nucleus projected mainly to trigeminal areas of primary (S1) as well as second

NADPH-diaphorase-positive neurons and pathways in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta.

We described the NADPH-diaphorase-containing neurons and fibres in the brain of the frog Rana esculenta. In the telencephalon stained cells occurred in the olfactory bulb, all subdivisions of the pallium, the diagonal band, the medial septum and the striatum. The olfactory glomeruli showed the most intense enzyme reaction. The neuropil of the accessory olfactory bulb was also heavily stained and this staining extended to the rostral diencephalon through the ventral lateral pallium. Fibre staining was less intense in the medial pallium and the medial septum. In the diencephalon, NADPH-diaphoras
