Mechanistic and "natural" body metaphors and their effects on attitudes to hormonal contraception.

A small, self-selected convenience sample of male and female contraceptive users in the United Kingdom (n = 34) were interviewed between 2006 and 2008 concerning their feelings about the body and their contraceptive attitudes and experiences. The interviewees were a sub-sample of respondents (n = 188) who completed a paper-based questionnaire on similar topics, who were recruited through a poster placed in a family planning clinic, web-based advertisements on workplace and university websites, and through direct approaches to social groups. The bodily metaphors used when discussing contracepti

Marketing communication in the area of breast and cervical cancer prevention.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Innovative marketing campaigns and promotional activities can successfully contribute to the improvement of public health by raising the level of general knowledge about health issues and benefits that the change of habits, eradication of undesirable behaviour and regular medical controls have. The focus should be on continuous marketing communication through various mass media or direct communication between medical staff and patients. The aim of this paper was to define the role that various communication channels have in the process of informing and educating the target grou

What's new in reproductive biology? Report from the 10th Meeting of the Society for Biology of Reproduction (Towarzystwo Biologii Rozrodu, TBR).

The 10th Meeting of the Society for Biology of Reproduction (Towarzystwo Biologii Rozrodu, TBR) was held on September 12th-14th, 2024 in Warsaw, Poland. It was a continuation of previous meetings since 1999, when the first Meeting was held in Mierki near Olsztyn. As in previous meetings, the conference brought together an outstanding group of nearly 140 researchers, all connected by their work in reproductive biology across various animal models. During the lecture and poster sessions, participants explored a wide range of topics, including gamete and early embryonic development, assisted repr

Building meaningful partnerships: engaging and co-developing a patient advisory council to inform the implementation of person-centred quality indicators in Alberta primary care.

BACKGROUND: Effective primary care improves patient outcomes by providing comprehensive, continuous, and person-centred care. The Patient's Medical Home vision positions primary care as the central entry point to high-quality health care in Canada. In Alberta, Person-centred Care Quality Indicators (PC-QIs) were developed with patients and health system stakeholders, are being implemented across the province to assess and report patient experiences in primary care. To ensure that patients are central to this work, a PC-QI patient Advisory Council (PAC) was created. METHODS: The PC-QI PAC was

Availability and Nature of Commercial Tick Control Services in Three Lyme Disease Endemic States.

In an update of earlier surveys conducted in Connecticut and New Jersey in the mid-1990s, an online survey of private commercial pest control firms engaged in residential tick control showed that the application of synthetic acaricides continues to be the primary method of control used. The carbamate and organophospate acaricides, previously the most commonly used against ticks, have given way to synthetic pyrethroids and, to a lesser extent, the use of natural product/organic acaricides. Typical costs for a single acaricide application today ($100-$200 for a 1 acre [0.4 ha] property) remain s

How can we make postnatal information resources more accessible to women experiencing challenges accessing healthcare? Report of a co-production project.

BACKGROUND: There is a serious and persistent gap in perinatal morbidity and mortality rates for women from minoritised groups and for those living in deprived areas in the UK. If symptoms can be recognised in time this enables them to be treated more effectively. There are numerous information resources of varying quality detailing symptoms of potential postnatal serious symptoms that inform women's decisions to seek care. However, cross cultural understanding, linguistic constraints and multiple challenges that act in a mutually reinforcing way can impact women's access to information in a f

Biomolecular Corona of Extracellular Vesicles: Report on Isev Workshop.

The concept of the "biomolecular corona" (BC) was first introduced to describe the spontaneous absorption of molecules, mainly proteins, onto the surface of synthetic nanoparticles upon exposure to biological fluids. More recently, the same term has been used to describe biomolecules that dynamically interact with the surface of extracellular vesicles (EVs) during their biogenesis, secretion, or upon exposure to intracellular or extracellular milieus, including biological fluids. The EV biomolecular corona is a key determinant of EV identity, shaping their cellular uptake, biodistribution, and

The International Virus Bioinformatics Meeting 2020.

The International Virus Bioinformatics Meeting 2020 was originally planned to take place in Bern, Switzerland, in March 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic put a spoke in the wheel of almost all conferences to be held in 2020. After moving the conference to 8-9 October 2020, we got hit by the second wave and finally decided at short notice to go fully online. On the other hand, the pandemic has made us even more aware of the importance of accelerating research in viral bioinformatics. Advances in bioinformatics have led to improved approaches to investigate viral infections and outbreaks. The

Cognitive interviews to improve a patient-centered contraceptive effectiveness poster.

OBJECTIVES: To refine the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s contraceptive education poster using patient-centered design. Development and pretest of key visual imagery in a campaign for the prevention of child maltreatment.

INTRODUCTION: This article discusses the development and pretesting of key visual imagery in a promotional campaign developed in Quebec, Canada. This campaign is the media-based component of a broader prevention strategy involving the use of the Triple P program (Sanders, 1999). OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to pretest with parents the preliminary version of a poster that uses the campaign's key visual imagery prior to final production. METHOD: In total, 26 parents from the regions of Quebec City and Montreal participated in four focus groups. RESULTS: Two general themes emerged from the focu

An investigation of the information provided to the parents of young people with mental health needs on an internet forum.

BACKGROUND: Access to Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) can be difficult, with lengthy wait times. Many of the young people and their parents are not signposted to any form of support during their wait for initial assessment or treatment and people are increasingly turning towards web-based resources for help and advice. However, there are some concerns about the quality of the information shared online. Research on the use and quality of information shared on online platforms for mental health inquiries is limited. AIMS: We aimed to investigate the content and quality of
