Microbleeds in postmortem brains of patients with Alzheimer disease: a T2*-weighted gradient-echo 7.0 T magnetic resonance imaging study.

This study aims to determine the distribution and to quantify microbleeds (MBs) in postmortem brains of patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) on T2*-weighted gradient-echo 7.0 T magnetic resonance imaging. Twenty-eight AD brains were compared with 5 controls. The AD brains were subdivided further: 18 without and 10 with additional severe cerebral amyloid angiopathy (AD-CAA). The distribution and the number of cortical focal signal intensity losses, representing MBs, were assessed on coronal sections at the frontal, the central, and the occipital level of a cerebral hemisphere. MBs prevailed in

In vivo PET imaging and postmortem studies suggest potentially reversible and irreversible stages of brain metabolic failure in Alzheimer's disease.

In vivo brain imaging of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) using positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrates progressive reductions in resting-state brain glucose metabolism and blood flow (markers of synaptic activity) in relation to dementia severity, more so in association than primary cortical regions. During cognitive or psychophysical stimulation, however, blood flow and metabolism in the affected brain regions can increase to the same extent in mildly demented AD patients as in age-matched controls, despite reduced resting state values. The extent of activation declines with de

Operational usefulness of postmortem computed tomography for presumed person identification through Antemortem image comparison: A retrospective case series.

This study aimed to evaluate the practical utility of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) for radiologic comparison-based identification in routine forensic cases where a person was already identified and antemortem (AM) imaging was available. Between January 2021 and January 2024, police requested PMCT-based AM image comparison in 50 forensic cases. In all these cases, neither dental nor fingerprint identification was possible. DNA testing was not planned in most cases because close relatives were not available. AM images were collected from various hospitals and clinics, including radiogra

A Case Report of a Postmortem Intrauterine Fetal Magnetic Resonance Imaging That Identified an Umbilical Cord Factor as the Cause of Fetal Death.

Compared to conventional autopsies, using postmortem fetal imaging techniques to investigate the cause of intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) allows for shorter analysis times and increased consent rates from parents. We reported a case of IUFD in which postmortem fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed before delivery. We confirmed the umbilical abnormalities on MRI: a true knot, hypocoiled, and entangled with the fetal trunk. Notably, the umbilical cord entanglement observed on MRI had been released at the time of delivery. These MRI findings supported the umbilical cord abnormalit

Correlation of hypointensities in susceptibility-weighted images to tissue histology in dementia patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy: a postmortem MRI study.

Neuroimaging with iron-sensitive MR sequences [gradient echo T2* and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI)] identifies small signal voids that are suspected brain microbleeds. Though the clinical significance of these lesions remains uncertain, their distribution and prevalence correlates with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), hypertension, smoking, and cognitive deficits. Investigation of the pathologies that produce signal voids is necessary to properly interpret these imaging findings. We conducted a systematic correlation of SWI-identified hypointensities to tissue pathology in postmortem

Virtopsy hemorrhage of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle by blunt force to the neck in postmortem multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

In forensic autopsies, one of the most important and common signs of violence to the neck is hemorrhages of the soft tissues. The Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bern evaluates the usefulness of postmortem multislice computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of forensic cases prior to autopsy. The aim of this study was to prove the sensitivity of postmortem MSCT and MRI in the detection of hemorrhages of the neck muscles. A full body scan prior to and a detailed scan of the explanted larynx after autopsy were performed. MSCT detected multiple fractures of the larynx. De

Fetal Presentation of Walker-Warburg Syndrome With a Novel POMT1 Splice-Altering Variant: Antenatal Imaging, Postmortem MRI, Autopsy, and Molecular Correlation.

Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is a fatal autosomal recessive disorder characterized by brain and eye malformations, and prenatal diagnosis relies heavily on neuroimaging findings to guide targeted genetic screening. Here, we describe a distinctive second-trimester fetal imaging pattern observed in two siblings. In vivo and postmortem fetal magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated hydrocephalus, fused ventricles, hypoplastic cerebellar hemispheres, a small supraoccipital meningoencephalocele, and a recurrent hypoplastic 'Z'-shaped brainstem configuration. Whole-exome sequencing identified a homo

Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral globi pallidi lesions in a death associated with prolonged carbon monoxide poisoning: a case report.

A man and a woman were found dead in the same car with a burned coal briquette. The cause of death of the woman was assigned to acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning without difficulty based on typical findings associated with this condition, including elevation of carboxyhaemoglobin (COHb). However, the man had an unremarkable elevation of COHb and a higher rectal temperature compared to that of the woman. Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) revealed ambiguous low-density areas in the bilateral globi pallidi. Further analysis by postmortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) imaging showed these lesio

Altropane, a SPECT or PET imaging probe for dopamine neurons: III. Human dopamine transporter in postmortem normal and Parkinson's diseased brain.

Increasing evidence suggests that the dopamine transporter is situated almost exclusively on dopamine neurons. Accordingly, it is an valuable marker for Parkinson's disease and other pathological states of dopamine neurons. We previously demonstrated that the potent dopamine transport inhibitor [125I]altropane (IACFT:E-N-iodoallyl-2beta-carbomethoxy-3beta-(4-fluor ophenyl)tropane) is a high affinity selective probe for the dopamine transporter in monkey brain and an effective SPECT imaging agent in nonhuman primate brain. We now report the binding properties of [125I]altropane in postmortem ti

Postmortem computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging facilitates forensic autopsy in a fatal case of poisoning with formic acid, diphenhydramine, and ethanol.

A case of fatal poisoning by ingesting formic acid, diphenhydramine, and ethanol by a 25-year-old woman who committed suicide is presented. Prior to autopsy, postmortem computed tomography and postmortem magnetic resonance tomography were performed and revealed severe damage to the stomach, the left thoracic wall, and parts of the liver. Imaging detected acid-induced fluid-fluid level within the thoracic cavity (fat-equivalent fluid and necrotic pleural effusion). This case report illustrates that postmortem cross-sectional imaging may facilitate dissection of severely damaged or complex regio

Recording living and postmortem friction ridge patterns using image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method.

Recording friction ridge patterns is a critical step in personal identification, as only clear impressions can be reliably compared with database records. This study presents two approaches-image processing and a fiber-optic-inspired total internal reflection method (FOM)-and compares them with frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR), ink, and powder methods to identify a simple and reliable workflow for forensic evidence collection. The results indicate that no single method is suitable for all fingerprint conditions; instead, a combination of complementary techniques is required. The rec

Stature estimation based on the mandibular bone measurements using three-dimensional images from postmortem computed tomography in a Japanese population.

We aimed to evaluate the correlation between cadaver stature and mandibular bone measurements using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) images and develop a stature estimation formula for a Japanese population. In total, 307 and 72 identified cadavers who underwent postmortem CT were selected as the "training" and "validation" datasets, respectively, to derive a stature estimation formula. Four mandibular bone measurements (linear distances between the bilateral mandibular condyles: C-C, from the mental spine to the mandibular condyle: S-C, between the bilateral mandibular foramen:

State of the Art on the Role of Postmortem Computed Tomography Angiography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Diagnosis of Cardiac Causes of Death: A Narrative Review.

The need of a minimally invasive approach, especially in cases of cultural or religious oppositions to the internal examination of the body, has led over the years to the introduction of postmortem CT (PMCT) methodologies within forensic investigations for the comprehension of the cause of death in selected cases (e.g., traumatic deaths, acute hemorrhages, etc.), as well as for personal identification. The impossibility to yield clear information concerning the coronary arteries due to the lack of an active circulation to adequately distribute contrast agents has been subsequently overcome by

Combining Digital Camera Metadata and Artificial Intelligence to Sort Postmortem Gross Photographs: A Novel Approach in Image Classification in Forensic Pathology.

Reviewing postmortem photographs is routine in forensic pathology. Although standard photographic techniques are used, sorting postmortem photographs can be overly time-consuming, especially when reviewing large quantities of photographs. Artificial intelligence may assist in identifying body parts/locations but is challenged in determining spatial relationships such as sidedness, angle, and distance/depth. Metadata stored in modern digital cameras provides physical data that would assist in determining this information, which can be critical in the legal setting. This proof-of-concept study u

Postmortem Digital Image Correlation and Finite Element Modeling Demonstrate Posterior Scleral Deformations during Optic Nerve Adduction Tethering.

Postmortem human eyes were subjected to optic nerve (ON) traction in adduction and elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) to investigate scleral surface deformations. We incrementally adducted 11 eyes (age 74.1 ± 9.3 years, standard deviation) from 26° to 32° under normal IOP, during imaging of the posterior globe, for analysis by three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC). In the same eyes, we performed uniaxial tensile testing in multiple regions of the sclera, ON, and ON sheath. Based on individual measurements, we analyzed eye-specific finite element models (FEMs) simulating adducti

Reduction in [18F]Nifene Binding, a PET imaging Probe for α4β2* Nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors in Hippocampus-Subiculum of postmortem human Alzheimer's disease brain.

Nicotinic acetylcholinergic receptors (nAChRs), including the α4β2* subtype are involved in cognition, learning and memory and may be adversely affected in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In our efforts to consider translational use of [18F]nifene PET in AD, we report quantitative autoradiographic evaluation of α4β2* nAChRs using hippocampus-subiculum (HP-SUB) from cognitively normal (CN) and AD subjects. Brain slices were incubated in [18F]nifene for α4β2* nAChRs and adjacent sections were tested with [18F]flotaza for Aβ plaques and [125I]IPPI for tau. Anti-Aβ and anti-tau immunostaining were carri
