This study evaluated the effects of dietary potassium diformate supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, gastrointestinal pH, jejunal morphology, digestive enzyme activity, and antioxidant status of weaned piglets in a 28-day trial. Twenty-four weaned piglets were selected and, after a 4-day adaptation period, randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups (n = 6). The dietary treatments included a control diet (basal diet) and 3 diets supplemented with 0.6%, 1.2%, or 1.8% potassium diformate in the basal diet. The results indicated that the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of piglet

In a prior 28-day dietary study in rats with 20 and 100 ppm K⁺ PFOS, activation of PPARα and CAR/PXR were concluded to be etiological factors in K⁺ PFOS-induced hepatomegaly and hepatic tumorigenesis. The objective of this study was to evaluate persistence/resolution of K⁺ PFOS-induced, liver-related effects in male Sprague Dawley rats following a 7-day dietary exposure to K⁺ PFOS at 20 or 100 ppm. Groups of 10 rats per treatment were observed on recovery Day(s) 1, 28, 56, and 84 following treatment. Changes consistent with hepatic PPARα and CAR/PXR activation noted on recovery Day 1 included:

The present study investigated the potential role for activation of PPARα and CAR/PXR by potassium PFOS (K⁺ PFOS) with respect to the etiology of hepatic hypertrophy and hepatocellular adenoma in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed K⁺ PFOS (20 or 100 ppm) for either 1, 7, or 28 days. Wyeth 14,643 (Wy 14,643, 50 ppm) and phenobarbital (PB, 500 ppm) were the controls for PPARα and CAR/PXR activation, respectively. Measurements included: plasma ALT, AST, cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose; liver protein and DNA content; liver activities of palmitoyl CoA oxidase (ACOX), Cyp4A, CYP2B, and

Increasing evidence indicates that the adrenal cortex of most mammalian species expresses distinct forms of cytochrome P-450(11 beta), a steroidogenic enzyme that catalyses the terminal steps in the biosynthesis of both glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. In the human, mouse, and rat, two genes have been isolated, designated CYP11B1 and CYP11B2. The product of CYP11B2 (aldosterone synthase) is required for the successive 11 beta-, 18-hydroxylations and 18-oxidation of deoxycorticosterone that lead to the production of aldosterone in the zona glomerulosa. In contrast, the product of CYP11B1

AIMS: Many guidelines recommend increases in potassium intake. However, the relationship of dietary potassium intake with incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been examined in those with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), including sodium acting antagonistically with potassium. We investigated these relationships in Japanese patients with T2DM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The investigation was part of the JDCP study, a nationwide prospective study begun in 2007. Analysed were 1477 persons with T2DM, 40-75 years of age, who completed a brief-type, self-administered Diet History Questionnaire at basel

Potassium dysregulation can be life-threatening. Dietary potassium modification is a management strategy for hyperkalaemia. However, a 2017 review for clinical guidelines found no trials evaluating dietary restriction for managing hyperkalaemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Evidence regarding dietary hyperkalaemia management was reviewed and practice recommendations disseminated. A literature search using terms for potassium, hyperkalaemia, and CKD was undertaken from 2018 to October 2022. Researchers extracted data, discussed findings, and formulated practice recommendations. A consumer re

By controlling urinary potassium excretion, the kidneys play a key role in maintaining whole-body potassium homeostasis. Conversely, low urinary potassium excretion (as a proxy for insufficient dietary intake) is increasingly recognized as a risk factor for the progression of kidney disease. Thus, there is a reciprocal relationship between potassium and the kidney: the kidney regulates potassium balance but potassium also affects kidney function. This review explores this relationship by discussing new insights into kidney potassium handling derived from recently characterized tubulopathies an

The relationship between dietary nutrient intake and bone mineral density (BMD) has not been clarified. In the U.S. population, we have demonstrated that dietary intake of multiple nutrients (potassium, magnesium, and sodium) is positively associated with BMD and negatively associated with the prevalence of osteopenia. This study examined whether there is an association between dietary potassium, magnesium, and sodium intake and BMD, osteopenia, and osteoporosis, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2005 to 2010, 2013 to 2014, and 2017 to 2018. We assessed

Whereas the adequate intake of potassium is relatively high in healthy adults, i.e., 4.7 g per day, a dietary potassium restriction of usually less than 3 g per day is recommended in the management of patients with reduced kidney function, especially those who tend to develop hyperkalaemia including patients who are treated with angiotensin pathway modulators. Most potassium-rich foods are considered heart-healthy nutrients with high fibre, high anti-oxidant vitamins and high alkali content such as fresh fruits and vegetables; hence, the main challenge of dietary potassium management is to mai

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Serum potassium has been found to be a significant predictor of diabetes risk, but the effect of dietary potassium on diabetes risk is not clear. We sought to determine if dietary potassium is associated with risk of incident type 2 diabetes in young adults.
METHODS: We used data from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. Potassium intake was measured by (1) an average of three 24 h urinary potassium collections at the 5-year study visit, and (2) the CARDIA dietary assessment instrument at baseline. Incident type 2 diabetes cases were ascertaine

1. Prior adaptation to a high potassium (HK) diet reduces the increment in plasma potassium after nephrectomy and acute potassium loading. Previous work has suggested that this 'extrarenal potassium adaptation' is due to direct stimulation of cellular potassium uptake by chronic hyperaldosteronism. 2. In contrast, we have shown that when dietary potassium is withdrawn from HK rats, large urinary potassium losses persist, resulting in 'paradoxical potassium depletion'. This potassium depletion facilitates cellular potassium uptake and is, at least in part, responsible for extrarenal potassium a

Traditionally, diets for kidney disease were low in potassium. This recommendation was based on outdated research and often wrong assumptions that do not reflect current evidence. In fact, studies conducted over the past decades show patients with CKD, including kidney failure, do not benefit from the restriction of plant foods relative to control. Generally, dietary potassium does not correlate with serum potassium, and we posit that this is due to the effects of fiber on colonic potassium absorption, the alkalinizing effect of fruits and vegetables on metabolic acidosis, and the bioavailabil

In the past decade, understanding of the mechanisms by which the kidneys sense dietary potassium imbalance and affect the cardiorenal system has substantially advanced. These mechanisms explain why low-potassium diets promote salt-sensitive hypertension, whereas potassium-rich diets enhance natriuresis and lower blood pressure. Increasing dietary potassium may therefore be an effective strategy to reduce cardiovascular disease risk. Clinical trials have shown that replacing regular salt with potassium-enriched substitutes lowers blood pressure and reduces cardiovascular events and mortality. E

Dietary potassium intake has been demonstrated to significantly lower blood pressure (BP) in a dose-responsive manner in both hypertensive and nonhypertensive patients in observational studies, clinical trials, and several meta-analyses. In hypertensive patients, the linear dose-response relationship is a 1.0 mm Hg reduction in systolic BP and a 0.52 mm Hg reduction in diastolic BP per 0.6 g per day increase in dietary potassium intake that is independent of baseline potassium deficiency. The average reduction in BP with 4.7 g (120 mmol) of dietary potassium per day is 8.0/4.1 mm Hg, depending

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the impacts of serum and dietary potassium measures on glucose metabolism and diabetes risk in older adults.
METHODS: Among participants of the Cardiovascular Health Study, a community-based cohort of older American adults, we examined a) cross-sectional associations between potassium and measures of insulin sensitivity and secretion estimated from oral glucose tolerance tests and b) longitudinal associations of serum and dietary potassium with diabetes risk.
RESULTS: Among 4,754 participants aged ≥65 years at baseline, there were 445 cases of incident diab

The Salt Substitute and Stroke Study (SSaSS) demonstrated significant reductions in systolic blood pressure (SBP), and the risk of stroke, major cardiovascular events and total mortality with the use of potassium-enriched salt. The contribution of sodium reduction versus potassium increase to these effects is unknown. We identified four different data sources describing the association between sodium reduction, potassium supplementation and change in SBP. We then fitted a series of models to estimate the SBP reductions expected for the differences in sodium and potassium intake in SSaSS, deriv

Hyperkalemia is a consequential complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and clinical guidance has traditionally restricted potassium-rich foods despite the potential benefits of plant-rich diets. This guidance also does not address potassium added during food processing, such as potassium chloride, phosphate, citrate, and lactate. This review examines potassium intake and clinical outcomes in CKD in the context of food additives, drawing on three indirect bodies of evidence: (1) dietary potassium intake and clinical outcomes, (2) potassium source and serum potassium response, and (3) tri

High sodium and low potassium intakes are associated with increased levels of blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular diseases. Assessment of habitual dietary habits are helpful to evaluate their intake and adherence to healthy dietary recommendations. In this study, we determined sodium and potassium food-specific content and intake in a Northern Italy community, focusing on the role and contribution of adherence to Mediterranean diet patterns. We collected a total of 908 food samples and measured sodium and potassium content using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Using a valid

We investigated the possible role of potassium deficiency, a recognized cause of myopathy, in the pathogenesis of experimental acute alcoholic myopathy (EAM) in the rat. Alcohol-treated animals receiving the same dietary potassium as controls developed mild hypokalemia; however, muscle potassium was preserved or elevated even in the presence of scattered muscle fiber necrosis. Increasing dietary potassium raised serum potassium but did not prevent EAM. These data indicate that hypokalemia in EAM is due to potassium redistribution between intra- and extracellular compartments rather than potass
