Clinical practice guideline on pharmacological and psychological management of adult patients with an anxiety disorder and comorbid substance use.

This review synthesizes the pharmacological and psychosocial interventions that have been conducted in comorbid anxiety disorders and SUDs while also providing clinical recommendations about which intervention elements are helpful for addressing substance use versus anxiety symptoms in patients with these co-occurring conditions. The best evidence from randomized controlled trials was used to evaluate treatment options. The strength of recommendations was described using the GRADE approach. Clinical trials are only available for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for social anxiety. Conc

Auto-photovoice: A reflexive extension of photovoice methodology and its practice in a COVID-quarantined community psychology course.

This article introduces "auto-photovoice," a novel self-reflexive extension of photovoice methodology where participant-researchers turn the camera on themselves to explore their personal experiences and observations of a phenomenon. In our exemplar project, students and faculty codesigned and implemented auto-photovoice methodology during a 10-week online community psychology graduate seminar during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Our photos addressed the prompt, "What inequities do we experience and witness in well-being related to COVID-19?" The initial analysis of weekly discussions of t

Paving the Road for More Ethical and Equitable Policies and Practices in Telerehabilitation in Psychology and Neuropsychology: Protocol for a Rapid Review.

BACKGROUND: Virtual rehabilitation, or telerehabilitation (TR), has exponentially evolved in the last few years, gaining particular momentum since the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to a new reality of strict restrictions of physical contact necessitating the shift from in-person health services to tele-health visits, TR has seen widespread adoption. In this context, ensuring ethical and equitable TR services is crucial for establishing sustainable TR models for psychology and neuropsychology into health care systems. This requires complete and consistent guidance for clinicians and patients i

New directions in the management of chronic pain: self-regulation theory as a model for integrative clinical psychology practice.

The next generation of empirically derived clinical health psychology involves use of self-regulation theory for understanding and treating chronic pain. Temporomandibular disorders serve as a model to illustrate how increasing self-regulatory strength facilitates small, behavioral changes that positively influence the underlying physiological factors known to be important in the etiology and maintenance of chronic pain conditions. For individuals with chronic temporomandibular disorders, physical self-regulation is an integrative clinical health psychology intervention that decreases both phy

Childhood emotional abuse and neglect as predictors of psychological and physical symptoms in women presenting to a primary care practice.

OBJECTIVE: There were two aims to this study: first to examine whether emotional abuse and neglect are significant predictors of psychological and somatic symptoms, and lifetime trauma exposure in women presenting to a primary care practice, and second to examine the strength of these relationships after controlling for the effects of other types of childhood abuse and trauma. METHOD: Two-hundred and five women completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Bernstein et al., 1994), Trauma History Questionnaire (Green, 1996), the Symptom Checklist-revised (Derogatis, 1997), and the Revised Civi

Caste critical race theory (CasteCRIT): Caste in the United States and its implications for psychological education, advocacy, research, and practice.

Based on the centuries-old ideology, caste is the core, structural organizing principle for Indians and Indian Americans, emphasizing graded hierarchical oppression. In the United States, caste functions at the intersection of race, immigration, gender, class, and religion, profoundly affecting the lived experiences of caste-oppressed people. This article theorizes caste critical race theory (CasteCRIT), grounded in Dalit feminist epistemology, and stands as an anticasteist, anti-racist, and anticolonial psychological theory. CasteCRIT builds on critical race theory as its necessary foundation

From innovation to implementation: a case report on virtual reality for chronic pain and psychological well-being in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging non-pharmacologic intervention for chronic pain management among Veterans. Although randomized controlled trials have demonstrated the efficacy of skills-based VR interventions such as RelieVRx for reducing pain and anxiety, less is known about how these interventions can be implemented within real-world interdisciplinary care settings in the Caribbean or how they influence patient engagement and psychological outcomes in routine practice. This case series aims to describe real-world implementation and patient-level outcomes with Veter

Social media utilization, mindfulness practice, and psychological distress of nonprofit workers in China: mediation effects of positive and negative affect.

INTRODUCTION: In the contemporary landscape, the intersection of technology and human behavior has given rise to transformative trends, prominently featuring the emergence of social media. Nevertheless, studies show that adults who heavily depend on these platforms may affect their psychological distress. Conversely, a growing body of research indicates that engaging in mindfulness practices can regulate emotional reactions and contribute to enhanced mental health, resulting in a reduction of psychological distress. METHODS: In this investigation, a cross-sectional survey involving 318 adult

Clinical practice guideline on pharmacological and psychological management of adult patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders and a comorbid substance use.

Although correct diagnosis and management of patients with schizophrenia and a comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) would determine a decrease in morbidity and mortality in these patients, development of efficient therapeutic strategies is still pending. We present recommendations on the pharmacological and psychological management of these patients following the 'PICO' structure (Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcomes). Evaluation of the quality of studies and summary of the evidence for each question was performed following the recommendations of the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Ass

The physical and psychological sexual well-being of women with pelvic malignancy: how can we understand and improve our practice?

How can we better understand and improve our practice around the physical and psychological well-being of women treated with radiation therapy for pelvic malignancy? In this issue, Summerfield et al report the results of a nationwide survey capturing practices around the management of radiation therapy-induced vaginal adhesions and stenosis (RTVAS) across New Zealand. This study highlights the need for oncologists to improve care around a challenging but critically important aspect of women's health beyond a cancer diagnosis.

The therapeutic relationship mediates the association between affirmative practice and psychological well-being among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer clients.

In this study, we tested a conceptual model through which lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) clients' perceptions of their therapists' affirmative practices and the therapeutic relationship (i.e., working alliance and the real relationship) would correlate with psychological well-being. We hypothesized that the therapeutic relationship would mediate the relation between clients' perceptions of their therapists' affirmative practices and psychological well-being while controlling for precounseling distress, client age, client race/ethnicity, number of psychotherapy sessions, and therapist

How are parental practices and attitudes towards corporal punishment related to child academic, developmental, or psychological-emotional dysfunctioning?

Corporal punishment (CP) is a widely spread disciplining practice among parents and caregivers globally. Our paper aimed to explore the relationship between the parental attitudes towards CP, expected outcomes of CP, and parenting practices on one hand, with the reported dysfunctions of their children, on the other. Additionally, we aimed to explore the relationship between the use of CP and the reported academic, developmental, and psychological-emotional dysfunctions of their children. The present study involved a nationally representative sample of 1186 parents in Serbia, who had at least o

Knowledge and practice of mothers of school-going children regarding iodized salt and its association with the psychology testing of the students.

CONTEXT: Iodized salt is the mainstay intervention to tackle iodine-related disorders. In spite of the government's efforts to make iodized salt available in more than 90% of the households across the country, there are sketchy details on its use. Since the main propagators of this intervention are the mothers cooking in kitchen, this study was conceived, as a corollary to a larger micronutrient assessment study among school-going children. AIMS: The aim of this was to assess knowledge, practice of mothers of school-going children (6-16 years) regarding use of iodized salt, and to see any ass

A qualitative study of the perceptions, practices and socio-psychological suffering related to chronic brugian filariasis in Kerala, southern India.

Lymphatic filariasis is a major health problem in many parts of the tropical world. Although the disease itself is rarely fatal, the disability caused by the swollen extremities, the acute attacks of adenolymphangitis and the consequent sufferings of those afflicted are considerable. The economic burden imposed by lymphatic filariasis is not fully quantified and information on the social and psychological problems caused by the disease is scanty. Semi-structured interviews were therefore used, in southern India, to assess the perceptions, practices and socio-psychological problems of 127 patie
