Knowledge, attitude and practices of snakebite management amongst health workers in Cameroon: Need for continuous training and capacity building.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite has only recently been recognized as a neglected tropical disease by the WHO. Knowledge regarding snakebites and its care is poor both at the population level, and at the health care staff level. The goal of this study was to describe the level of knowledge and clinical practice regarding snakebite among health care staff from Cameroon. METHODS: A two-day training dedicated to snakebite and its care was organized in 2015 in Yaoundé, capital city of Cameroon. A total of 98 health care staff from all over Cameroon attended the training. Prior to and after the training, an

Ratings of videotaped simulated patient interviews and four other methods of evaluating a psychiatry clerkship.

Ratings of videotaped interviews with simulated patients were compared with four other measures commonly used to evaluate medical students during their psychiatry clerkship. Intercorrelations among self-reported attitude change, written examination grade, and student rating of satisfaction with the clerkship suggest that each measures different processes. Low but significant correlations between preceptor ratings of interaction skills and data-gathering skills and process and content scores based on an end-of-course videotaped interview suggest that preceptor ratings and the videotaped intervi

Why do young nurses leave their organization? A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Nurse turnover is a major problem all over the world. It is known that young nurses who constitute the new nurse labour force are more likely to leave their organization, especially in their first year. However, qualitative studies that approach the problem from the perspective of young nurses and focus on the reasons for their decision to leave their organization are limited. AIM: To understand the reasons for young nurses' leaving their organization and determine their experiences, focusing on their point of view. METHODS: The study had a descriptive qualitative design and was

Effects of a Brief Educational Program on Optimization of Fluoroscopy to Minimize Radiation Exposure During Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fluoroscopy during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is increasingly performed by therapeutic endoscopists, many of whom have not received formal training in modulating fluoroscopy use to minimize radiation exposure. Exposure to ionizing radiation has significant health consequences for patients and endoscopists. We aimed to evaluate whether a 20-minute educational intervention for endoscopists would improve use of fluoroscopy and decrease ERCP-associated exposure to radiation for patients. METHODS: We collected data from 583 ERCPs, performed in Californ

The model of care at a leading medical cannabis clinic in Canada.

Medical cannabis access has been legalized in more than 30 countries worldwide and popularity among patients is increasing rapidly. Cannabinoid-based treatments have been shown to be beneficial for several symptoms such as chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, spasticity, chronic pain, intractable seizures and insomnia, yet high-quality clinical trials are still limited. As millions of patients now have legal access to medical cannabis, little information is available about the development of best clinical practices and an effective medical cannabis clinic model. A medical cannabis clinic

Still fumbling along? A comparative study of the newly qualified nurse's perception of the transition from student to qualified nurse.

An earlier study conducted in the United Kingdom, examining the newly qualified nurse's perception of the transition from student to qualified nurse, highlighted the limitations of pre-registration nurse education in respect of failing to provide adequate preparation for the qualified nurse's role. In the intervening years, major reforms in pre-registration nurse education and continuing professional education have occurred. Concomitant with these reforms have been major policy changes in health care delivery that have impacted upon the role of the nurse. Questions now arise as to whether the

Increasing Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder and Complementary and Integrative Health Services in Primary Care.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence-based therapies for opioid use disorder (OUD) and chronic pain, such as medications for OUD (MOUD) and complementary and integrative health (CIH; e.g., acupuncture and meditation) therapies, exist. However, their adoption has been slow, particularly in primary care, due to numerous implementation challenges. We sought to expand the use of MOUD and CIH within primary care by using an evidence-based quality improvement (EBQI) implementation strategy. METHODS: We used EBQI to engage two facilities in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) from June 2018 to September 2019.

Incidence, Prevention, and Management of Periprocedural Complications of Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion.

Major procedural complications related to left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) are relatively infrequent but may be associated with major morbidity and mortality. LAAO operators should be knowledgeable about these potential complications. Prompt recognition and treatment are necessary to avoid rapid deterioration and dire consequences. With stringent guidelines on operator training, competency requirements, and procedural-technical refinements, LAAO can be performed safely with low complication rates. This article focuses on commonly used devices, as well as prevention, treatment, and manage

Innovative Mental Health Clinical Placement: Developing Nurses' Relationship Skills.

Engagement in clinical placements is mandatory for all pre-registration nursing programs. Although clinical placements can be valuable, recent literature illustrates that placements within a mental health setting can vary in their educational development. The aim of the current study was to examine the potential learning benefit of 20 pre-registration nursing students in an innovative, university-accredited mental health clinical placement called Recovery Camp. Recovery Camp is a 5-day immersive clinical placement, grounded in therapeutic recreation, which involves all participants engaging in

Learning through participating on an interprofessional training ward.

Learning in clinical education can be understood as a process of becoming a legitimate participant in the relevant context. Interprofessional training wards (IPTWs) are designed to give students from educational programmes in health and social care a realistic experience of collaboration for the purpose of developing teamwork skills. IPTWs have been found to be appreciated by the students and to influence students' understanding of each other's professions. The aim of this study was to describe and analyse the students' learning on an interprofessional training ward in care for older persons t

International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health: Catalyst for interprofessional education and collaborative practice.

Patient-centred and community-based care is required for promotion of health equity. To enhance patient-centred interprofessional care, the World Health Organization recommends using the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Stellenbosch University's Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) strategy has promoted using ICF since 2010. Undergraduate medical students on rural clinical placements are expected to use ICF in approaching and managing patients. Students' ability to develop interprofessional care plans using ICF
