Effect of aging on manipulative behavior in the cuttlefish, sepia.

The cuttlefish is an active predator that is able to catch crabs of a size that is large relative to its own. The capture is followed by a complex manipulative behavior leading to paralysis of the prey by injection of a cephalotoxin. This manipulative behavior is relatively stereotyped, and earlier research has shown that the cuttlefish concentrates its bite on the articular basi-ischiocoxopodite membrane of the crab's fifth pair of pereiopods. By placing mechanical constraints on the base of the fifth pereiopods, we were able to demonstrate that this manipulative behavior presents a marked de

Behavioral correlates of semi-zygodactyly in Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) based on analysis of internet images.

Ospreys are renowned for their fishing abilities, which have largely been attributed to their specialized talon morphology and semi-zygodactyly-the ability to rotate the fourth toe to accompany the first toe in opposition of toes II and III. Anecdotal observations indicate that zygodactyly in Ospreys is associated with prey capture, although to our knowledge this has not been rigorously tested. As a first pass toward understanding the functional significance of semi-zygodactyly in Ospreys, we scoured the internet for images of Osprey feet in a variety of circumstances. From these we cross-tabu

Olfactory response of predatory mites to vegetative and reproductive parts of coconut palm infested by Aceria guerreronis.

The phytophagous mite Aceria guerreronis Keifer is an important pest of coconut worldwide. A promising method of control for this pest is the use of predatory mites. Neoseiulus baraki (Athias-Henriot) and Proctolaelaps bickleyi Bram are predatory mites found in association with A. guerreronis in the field. To understand how these predators respond to olfactory cues from A. guerreronis and its host plant, the foraging behavior of the predatory mites was investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer and on T-shaped arenas. The predators were subjected to choose in an olfactometer: (1) isolated parts (le

Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae): Life History, Predatory Potential, and Rearing Method of Earwigs.

The earwig Doru luteipes (Scudder) (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) is recognized as the most frequently encountered predatory insect species in maize agroecosystems across maize-producing regions of Brazil and other South American countries. For over three decades, the earwig has been extensively investigated through both field surveys and controlled laboratory studies aiming at biological control of insect pests. Although augmentative biological control strategies involving the release of D. luteipes have been proposed, the currently available data on its predatory behavior and efficiency remain s

Aripiprazole prevents stress-induced anxiety and social impairment, but impairs antipredatory behavior in zebrafish.

Environmental pollution caused by antipsychotic residues is a relevant ecological problem. Studies revealed that residues of these drugs are present in a wide range of different ecosystems and can have adverse effects on non-target organisms even in low environmental concentrations. Among these antipsychotic drugs, aripiprazole (APPZ) is a second-generation atypical antipsychotic that is a partial agonist of dopaminergic and serotoninergic receptors. APPZ is used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety or panic disorders. Thus, in this study

Lizard and Snake Tongues as Muscular Hydrostats: Morphology, Function, and Diversity.

Evolution of the mobile tetrapod tongue replaced the functional roles of water during feeding in ancestral fish. The tongue as an analogue of water is most clearly manifested in the protean shape changes permitted by hydrostatic mechanisms intrinsic to the complexly muscled tongues of mammals and lepidosaurian reptiles (tuatara, lizards, and snakes), which include the orthogonal and circular fiber systems characteristic of muscular hydrostats. I examine the morphology of lepidosaurian tongues and evidence for their use of hydrostatic mechanisms during several behaviors encompassing two major b

The effects of individual differences in anxiety on anti-predator responses, thermal and hypoxia tolerance in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Anxiety, as a crucial stress response to potential threats in animals, exhibits significant individual differences, with high-anxiety individuals typically allocating greater attentional resources to threat detection. We hypothesized that such individuals would demonstrate enhanced threat sensitivity and anti-predator responses, but compromised stress tolerance due to constrained energy allocation. Using the novel tank diving test, we screened zebrafish (Danio rerio) with high- and low-anxiety phenotypes and compared their anti-predator responses (anxiety-like behaviors, metabolic rates, and p

Prey capture kinematics of horned frogs (Anura: Ceratophryidae).

Horned frogs, members of the Ceratophryidae family, encompass a group of anurans varying in size and behavior, yet unified by morphological and behavioral traits enabling them to adopt a megalophagous diet (i.e., large prey feeding). Although the group has been the focus of numerous studies, our understanding of its feeding behavior remains limited. In this study, we characterize the feeding mechanism in five species representing the three extant genera of ceratophryid anurans, both in terrestrial and aquatic environments. We also explore the ability of Chacophrys pierottii to adjust feeding b

Responses to prey chemical cues in wild-caught, adult gopher snakes (Pituophis catenifer).

Surface chemical cues from prey elicit elevated levels of tongue-flicking and striking behavior in many species of snakes and lizards. These responses are mediated by the vomeronasal system, and they may even occur in the absence of other sensory cues. How individuals of a species respond to prey chemical cues can reflect developmental, ecological, and evolutionary processes. Our focus in this study was ecologically based, and involved testing whether levels of chemosensory responding reflect the putative relative intake of prey types in nature. We tested 11 wild-caught adult gopher snakes (Pi

Suction Feeding Turned on Its Head: A Functional Novelty Facilitates Lower Jaw Protrusion.

Functional novelties play important roles in creating new ways for organisms to access resources. In fishes, jaw protrusion has been attributed to the massive diversity of suction-based feeding systems, facilitating the dominant mode of prey capture in this group. Nearly all fishes that feed by suction use upper jaw protrusion, achieved by rotation of the mandible at its base, which then transmits forward motion to independently mobile upper jaw bones. In this study, by contrast, we explore an unusual form of lower jaw protrusion in the freshwater invertivore, Nannocharax fasciatus, enabled by

Fluid dynamics of feeding behaviour in white-spotted bamboo sharks.

Although the motor control of feeding is presumed to be generally conserved, some fishes are capable of modulating the feeding behaviour in response to prey type and or prey size. This led to the 'feeding modulation hypothesis', which states that rapid suction strikes are pre-programmed stereotyped events that proceed to completion once initiated regardless of sensory input. If this hypothesis holds true, successful strikes should be indistinguishable from unsuccessful strikes owing to a lack of feedback control in specialized suction feeding fishes. The hydrodynamics of suction feeding in whi

Specialised placement of morphs within the gall of the social aphid Pemphigus spyrothecae.

BACKGROUND: The strategic placement and aggregation of certain castes within the nests of eusocial insects such as bees and ants results in complex colonies that enjoy increased fitness through improved efficiency of social tasks. To examine if this advanced social phenomenon might apply to social aphids, the location of the numerous morphs within the nests (plant galls) of the aphid species Pemphigus spyrothecae was examined. RESULTS: A strong, almost exclusive tendency for soldiers to occupy the gall section nearest to the opening was detected. In addition, it was found that the most reprod

Greater Mouse-Tailed Bats Glide During Approximately 50% of Their Flight.

Flapping flight is widely regarded as a mechanically complex and energetically demanding mode of locomotion. In bats, the evolution of flapping flight is hypothesized to have arisen from gliding, an unpowered form of aerial movement. Although intermittent flap-gliding flight is considered advantageous in many bird species, this flight strategy has rarely been studied in bats. In this study, we used on-board tracking devices and audio recordings to characterize the flight behavior and corresponding echolocation of greater mouse-tailed bats (Rhinopoma microphyllum) in the wild. Our results revea

Who was the real sabertooth predator: Thylacosmilus or Thylacoleo?

Sabertoothed mammalian predators, all now extinct, were almost exclusively feloid carnivorans (Eutheria, Placentalia): here a couple of extinct metatherian predators are considered in comparison with the placental sabertooths. Thylacosmilus (the "marsupial sabertooth") and Thylacoleo (the "marsupial lion") were both relatively large (puma-sized) carnivores of the Plio-Pleistocene in the Southern Hemisphere (Argentina and Australia, respectively). Both carnivores have captured the public imagination, especially as predators that were somehow analogous to northern placental forms. But a more det

Stable isotopes and foraging behaviors support the role of antipredator benefits in driving the association between two marine fishes.

Research from terrestrial communities shows that diminished predation risk is a principal driver of heterospecific grouping behavior, with foraging ecology predicting the roles that species play in groups, as more vulnerable foragers preferentially join more vigilant ones from whom they can benefit. Meanwhile, field studies examining the adaptive significance of heterospecific shoaling among marine fish have focused disproportionately on feeding advantages such as scrounging or prey-flushing. Juvenile bonefish (Albula vulpes) occur almost exclusively among mojarras (Eucinostomus spp.) and even

Predator-prey landscapes of large sharks and game fishes in the Florida Keys.

Interspecific interactions can play an essential role in shaping wildlife populations and communities. To date, assessments of interspecific interactions, and more specifically predator-prey dynamics, in aquatic systems over broad spatial and temporal scales (i.e., hundreds of kilometers and multiple years) are rare due to constraints on our abilities to measure effectively at those scales. We applied new methods to identify space-use overlap and potential predation risk to Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) and permit (Trachinotus falcatus) from two known predators, great hammerhead (Sphyr

Hidden paths to endless forms most wonderful: ecology latently shapes evolution of multicellular development in predatory bacteria.

Ecological causes of developmental evolution, for example from predation, remain much investigated, but the potential importance of latent phenotypes in eco-evo-devo has received little attention. Using the predatory bacterium Myxococcus xanthus, which undergoes aggregative fruiting body development upon starvation, we tested whether adaptation to distinct growth environments that do not induce development latently alters developmental phenotypes under starvation conditions that do induce development. In an evolution experiment named MyxoEE-3, growing M. xanthus populations swarmed across agar

Wingtip folds and ripples on saturniid moths create decoy echoes against bat biosonar.

Sensory coevolution has equipped certain moth species with passive acoustic defenses to counter predation by echolocating bats.1,2 Some large silkmoths (Saturniidae) possess curved and twisted biosonar decoys at the tip of elongated hindwing tails.3,4 These are thought to create strong echoes that deflect biosonar-guided bat attacks away from the moth's body to less essential parts of their anatomy. We found that closely related silkmoths lacking such hindwing decoys instead often possess intriguing ripples and folds on the conspicuously lobed tips of their forewings. The striking analogy of t

Chronic pain produces hypervigilance to predator odor in mice.

The adaptive significance of acute pain (to withdraw from tissue-damaging or potentially tissue-damaging external stimuli, and to enhance the salience of the stimulus resulting in escape and avoidance learning) and tonic pain (to enforce recuperation by punishing movement) are well-accepted [1]. Pain researchers, however, generally assert that chronic pain has no adaptive significance, representing instead a pathophysiological state. This belief was recently challenged by the observation [2] that nociceptive sensitization caused by a chronic pain-producing injury reduced predation risk in squi

Spatial covariance of herbivorous and predatory guilds of forest canopy arthropods along a latitudinal gradient.

In arthropod community ecology, species richness studies tend to be prioritised over those investigating patterns of abundance. Consequently, the biotic and abiotic drivers of arboreal arthropod abundance are still relatively poorly known. In this cross-continental study, we employ a theoretical framework in order to examine patterns of covariance among herbivorous and predatory arthropod guilds. Leaf-chewing and leaf-mining herbivores, and predatory ants and spiders, were censused on > 1000 trees in nine 0.1 ha forest plots. After controlling for tree size and season, we found no negative pai
