Methodological illustration using machine learning methods to predict cancer-related fatigue in cancer patients.

Supervised machine learning is a popular tool for predictor selection in large data sets. The choice of method is currently either based on theory, subjective preferences, previous general simulation studies, or the best fit of a method to the data, which does not allow evaluating the methods' performance for a specific empirical application. In this article, we illustrate how to select a method through a simulation study tailored to an empirical application. The simulation study mimics cancer data with the aim of predicting patients' quality of life. We vary sample sizes, effect sizes, correl

Predictive factors affecting hepatitis patients survival results via application of the machine learning methods.

Hepatitis, caused by viruses A-E, can silently progress to liver damage, cirrhosis, or cancer. Chronic B and C increase failure risk. Machine learning models help predict hepatitis risks using patient data, symptoms, and history. This study used Decision Tree Classification (DTC) and Extreme Gradient Boosting Classification (XGBC) with three optimizers Rhizotomy Optimization Algorithm (ROA), Gold Rush Optimizer (GRO), and Motion-Encoded Electric Charged Particles Optimization Algorithm (MEPO) to enhance accuracy. Among hybrids, DTRO achieved the highest accuracy (0.991), outperforming DTC. XGR

Quantifying the uncertainty of human activity recognition using a Bayesian machine learning method: a prediction study.

PURPOSE: Machine learning methods accurately predict physical activity outcomes using accelerometer data generated by wearable devices. Thus, they allow investigation of the impact of the built environment on population physical activity. Although traditional machine learning methods do not provide prediction uncertainty, a new method, Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), can quantify such uncertainty as a posterior predictive distribution. Our objective was to evaluate the performance of BART in regard to predicting physical activity status. METHODS: We applied multinomial BART and a b

A novel method to predict white blood cells after kidney transplantation based on machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal white blood cell count after kidney transplantation is an important adverse clinical outcome. The abnormal white blood cell count in patients after surgery may be caused by the use of immunosuppressive agents and other factors. A lower white blood cell count than normal will greatly increase the probability of adverse outcomes such as infection and reduce the success rate of surgery. OBJECTIVE: To establish a machine learning prediction model of leukocyte drop to abnormal level after kidney transplantation, and provide reference for clinical treatment. METHODS: A total o

Application of a machine learning and optimization method to predict patellofemoral instability risk factors in children and adolescents.

PURPOSE: Conservative treatment remains the standard approach for first-time patellar dislocations. While risk factors for patellofemoral instability, a common paediatric injury, are well-established in adults, data concerning the progression of paediatric recurrent patellar dislocation remain scarce. A reproducible method was developed to quantitatively assess the patellofemoral morphology and anatomic risk factors in paediatric patients using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and machine learning analysis. METHODS: Data were analyzed from a retrospective review (2005-2022) of paediatric pati

An optimized XGBoost-based machine learning method for predicting wave run-up on a sloping beach.

Accurate and computationally efficient prediction of wave run-up is required to mitigate the impacts of inundation and erosion caused by tides, storm surges, and even tsunami waves. The conventional methods for calculating wave run-up involve physical experiments or numerical modeling. Machine learning methods have recently become a part of wave run-up model development due to their robustness in dealing with large and complex data. In this paper, an extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)-based machine learning method is introduced for predicting wave run-up on a sloping beach. More than 400 labo

Data-Driven Methods for Predicting ADHD Diagnosis and Related Impairment: The Potential of a Machine Learning Approach.

Current diagnostic criteria for ADHD include several symptoms that highly overlap in conceptual meaning and interpretation. Additionally, inadequate sensitivity and specificity of current screening tools have hampered clinicians' ability to identify those at risk for related outcomes. Using machine learning techniques, the current study aimed to propose a novel algorithm incorporating key ADHD symptoms to predict concurrent and future (i.e., five years later) ADHD diagnosis and related impairment levels. Participants were 399 children with and without ADHD; multiple informant measures of ADHD

Machine Learning Methods for Predicting Human-Adaptive Influenza A Viruses Based on Viral Nucleotide Compositions.

Each influenza pandemic was caused at least partly by avian- and/or swine-origin influenza A viruses (IAVs). The timing of and the potential IAVs involved in the next pandemic are currently unpredictable. We aim to build machine learning (ML) models to predict human-adaptive IAV nucleotide composition. A total of 217,549 IAV full-length coding sequences of the PB2 (polymerase basic protein-2), PB1, PA (polymerase acidic protein), HA (hemagglutinin), NP (nucleoprotein), and NA (neuraminidase) segments were decomposed for their codon position-based mononucleotides (12 nts) and dinucleotides (48

Machine Learning Methods as a Tool for Predicting Risk of Illness Applying Next-Generation Sequencing Data.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) data present an untapped potential to improve microbial risk assessment (MRA) through increased specificity and redefinition of the hazard. Most of the MRA models do not account for differences in survivability and virulence among strains. The potential of machine learning algorithms for predicting the risk/health burden at the population level while inputting large and complex NGS data was explored with Listeria monocytogenes as a case study. Listeria data consisted of a percentage similarity matrix from genome assemblies of 38 and 207 strains of clinical and

Association between the nutritional inflammation index and mortality among patients with sepsis: insights from traditional methods and machine learning-based mortality prediction.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by dysregulated immune responses and metabolic disturbances. The albumin-to-neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (ANLR) is a novel composite biomarker integrating nutritional and inflammatory status. However, its prognostic significance in sepsis remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the association between ANLR and mortality in sepsis patients using both traditional statistical methods and machine learning models. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the MIMIC-IV (v3.1) database. In this study, 6,288 patients

Machine-learning versus traditional methods for prediction of all-cause mortality after transcatheter aortic valve implantation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate mortality prediction following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is essential for mitigating risk, shared decision-making and periprocedural planning. Surgical risk models have demonstrated modest discriminative value for patients undergoing TAVI and are typically poorly calibrated, with incremental improvements seen in TAVI-specific models. Machine learning (ML) models offer an alternative risk stratification that may offer improved predictive accuracy. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane databases were searched until 16 December 2023 for st
