Two Islamophobias? Racism and religion as distinct but mutually supportive dimensions of anti-Muslim prejudice.

Debates about Islamophobia have been blighted by the question of whether the prejudice can be defined as a form of racism or as hostility to religion (or a combination of the two). This paper sheds light on this debate by presenting the findings of a new nationally representative survey, focused on the UK, that contrasts perceptions of Muslims not only with perceptions of other ethnic and religious minorities but also with perceptions of Islam as a religious tradition. We find that prejudice against Muslims is higher than for any other group examined other than Travellers. We also find contras

Revised and abbreviated forms of the Genderism and Transphobia Scale: tools for assessing anti-trans prejudice.

Many studies of anti-trans prejudice have measured such attitudes using the Genderism and Transphobia Scale (GTS; Hill & Willoughby, 2005). The GTS is unique in assessing negative attitudes and propensity for violence toward trans people. The present research addressed previously observed limitations in the psychometric properties of data produced by the GTS, including inconsistencies in factor structure and subscale scoring across studies. Results across the present 2 studies (Ns = 314 and 250) yielded 2 refined versions of the GTS: the 22-item GTS-Revised (GTS-R) and a more abbreviated 13-it

Advanced age as a contraindication to microvascular decompression for drug-resistant trigeminal neuralgia: evidence of prejudice?

Due to the alleged higher risk of complications of microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia in elderly we evaluated its age-related results. A retrospective analysis of clinical outcome and complications was performed in 476 patients affected by drug-resistant trigeminal neuralgia who underwent microvascular decompression. As much as 117 patients older than 65 years (Group 1) and 359 under the age of 65 (Group 2) were followed-up for a period of 7-138 months. Pain relief was complete without medication in 84.5% in Group 1. Morbidity included slight trigeminal hypoesthesia in 5.8%;

The Relationship Between Internalized Sexual Prejudice and Sexualized Substance Use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

LGBQ individuals report higher rates of sexualized drug use (SDU; i.e. the use of alcohol and/or other drugs before or during sex) than heterosexual individuals. Drawing on Minority Stress Theory, this paper explored internalized sexual prejudice (ISP; i.e. the process of internalizing negative societal attitudes toward minority sexual identities) as a theoretically relevant factor underlying this disparity. Relevant studies were identified through a systematic search of the PsycINFO, Cinahl, Medline Complete, Scopus, and Web of Science databases on the 29th of April, 2024, plus a subsequent s

[Training process of the social representations on transsexuality among health professionals: possible ways to overcome prejudice].

The scope of this paper is to identify and analyze the structure of social representations of health professionals about transsexuality. The theoretical and methodological benchmark used was the structural approach to social representations developed by Jean-Claude Abric. 128 health professionals from 22 health units in the State Health Department of the Federal District of Brasília were interviewed. Data collection consisted of the application of a semi-structured questionnaire based on the technique of free association with the key word "transsexuality." The data were processed using EVOC 20

Prejudice and politics in cognitive-behavioral therapy: An indigenous perspective from Aotearoa-New Zealand and Australia.

The political dimensions of cognitive-behavioral practice are considered in the context of a range of social justice issues, including the marginalization of minorities following colonization, and the role that research and practice play in supporting conditions that maintain trauma and injustice with disempowered peoples. It is argued that critical issues for CBT practitioners who engage with Indigenous peoples in Australasia include appreciating the narrow lens of legitimization, understanding their limited capacity to account for the impacts of systemic oppression, and accommodating points

Camouflaged prejudice and the affirmation of skin colour differences: assessment of racism among Brazilian undergraduate dental students.

The negative oral health outcomes of disadvantaged racial groups have been well-documented, as racial disparity in oral health persists over time and in different locations1. However, it is important to note that skin colour has no biological meaning, and the observed differences can be physiological expressions of social injustice such as racism. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the association between levels of modern racism (camouflaged prejudice and affirmation of differences) and sociodemographic characteristics of Brazilian dental students. Material and Method: An epidemiologica

Prejudice towards people with mental illness, schizophrenia, and depression among mental health professionals and the general population.

The aim of the study was to measure and compare prejudice towards people with specific mental illnesses between mental health professionals and the general population, and examine personality, ideological, and attitudinal antecedents of prejudice. To do so, we also aimed to validate three shortened scales of prejudice. A sample of mental health professionals (N = 299) and a sample from the general population (N = 427) completed shortened versions of the Prejudice towards People with Mental Illness, Prejudice towards People with Schizophrenia, and Prejudice towards People with Depression scales

Would an obese person whistle vivaldi? Targets of prejudice self-present to minimize appearance of specific threats.

How do targets of stigma manage social interactions? We built from a threat-specific model of prejudice to predict that targets select impression-management strategies that address the particular threats other people see them to pose. We recruited participants from two groups perceived to pose different threats: overweight people, who are heuristically associated with disease and targeted with disgust, and Black men, who are perceived to be dangerous and targeted with fear. When stereotypes and prejudices toward their groups were made salient, overweight people (Studies 1 and 2) and Black men

Reconceptualizing Social Acceptance: Stigma, Prejudice, and the Developmental Implications of School Experiences of Students with Intellectual Disability.

Societal prejudices shape the social positioning of students with intellectual disability in educational contexts. This study explores how social acceptance is produced and contested through everyday interactions influenced by stigma, cultural norms, and institutional practices. Drawing on Goffman's conceptualization of stigma and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems framework, social acceptance is treated as a relational and power-laden process rather than an individual trait. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers and parents of ch

Tolerance by surprise: evidence for a generalized reduction in prejudice and increased egalitarianism through novel category combination.

Prejudices towards different groups are interrelated, but research has yet to find a way to promote tolerance towards multiple outgroups. We devise, develop and implement a new cognitive intervention for achieving generalized tolerance based on scientific studies of social categorization. In five laboratory experiments and one field study the intervention led to a reduction of prejudice towards multiple outgroups (elderly, disabled, asylum seekers, HIV patients, gay men), and fostered generalized tolerance and egalitarian beliefs. Importantly, these effects persisted outside the laboratory in

Habit, prejudice, power and politics: issues in the conversion of H2-receptor antagonists to over-the-counter use.

H2-receptor antagonists have been widely prescribed in the last 20 years and are considered to rank among the safest drugs known. In several countries they have been switched to over-the-counter (OTC) status, and a similar move is under consideration in Canada. Some concerns have been raised as to the effectiveness of these drugs in the treatment of dyspepsia and heartburn, their safety when taken for self-diagnosed symptoms, and the potential for their use to delay diagnosis or mask serious disease. The author presents evidence to support the use of OTC H2-receptor antagonists in the treatmen

Is ethnic prejudice declining in Britain? Change in social distance attitudes among ethnic majority and minority Britons.

Most literature on racial prejudice deals with the racial attitudes of the ethnic majority and ethnic minorities separately. This paper breaks this tradition. We examine the social distance attitudes of white and non-white British residents to test if these attitudes follow the same trends over time, whether they are driven by the same social processes and whether they are inter-related. We have three main findings. Firstly, social distance from other ethnic groups has declined over time for both white and ethnic minority Britons. For the white majority there are both period and cohort element

The Complex Intersection Between Autism, Prejudice and the LGBTQIA+ Movement: An Analysis of an Excerpt from the Series "The Good Doctor".

In contemporary culture, digital content like social media videos and TV series shape social perceptions, sometimes with negative impacts, particularly in countries like Brazil. The series The Good Doctor exemplifies this, with an episode exploring sexuality and diversity through the lens of an autistic doctor. The character's rigid belief in binary sexes (XX and XY) and his ignorance of conditions like Klinefelter's and Morris syndromes reflect a narrow perspective. A confrontational dialog highlights his lack of empathy, which contrasts with his efforts to challenge autism stigmas. Conservat

Fighting Prejudice and Absorbing Refugees From Nazism: The National Committee for the Resettlement of Foreign Physicians, 1939-1945.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the medical profession reacted with hostility and erected formidable barriers to refugee physicians from Nazi-dominated Europe who sought to practice medicine in the United States. Yet, refugee physicians ultimately succeeded, with 77% of them working as doctors by 1945 and 98.6% by 1947. Although physician skills are readily transferable, and the United States had a genuine need for doctors after World War II drew 55 000 physicians into the military, refugee physicians' success can be attributed to the courageous physician leaders who lobbied on their behalf and the cr

Exploring Prejudice Toward Tinder: Two Experiments on the Social Perception of Dating App Users and Online-Formed Couples.

While dating apps such as Tinder are now widespread, social stigma toward their users remains a significant yet underexplored issue. Two experiments examined how prejudice toward Tinder shapes social perception and interpersonal attraction. Study 1 (N = 206) investigated impressions toward a potential partner whose profile was described as originating from Tinder versus Facebook. Higher prejudice predicted reduced attention to the target's images when the profile was presented as coming from Tinder and was associated with slightly more negative trait attributions. Curiously, participants with

Beyond Generalized Sexual Prejudice: Need for Closure Predicts Negative Attitudes Toward Bisexual People Relative to Gay/Lesbian People.

Increasing evidence suggests that bisexual people are sometimes evaluated more negatively than heterosexual and gay/lesbian people. A common theoretical account for this discrepancy argues that bisexuality is perceived by some as introducing ambiguity into a binary model of sexuality. The present brief report tests a single key prediction of this theory, that evaluations of bisexual people have a unique relationship with Need for Closure (NFC), a dispositional preference for simple ways of structuring information. Participants (n=3406) were heterosexual medical students from a stratified rando
