Retinopathy of prematurity in infants of birth weight > 2000 g after haemorrhagic shock at birth.

BACKGROUND: The risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is associated with low birth weight and low gestational age. For ROP screening examination is recommended in infants weighing < or = 1500 g or of less than 32 weeks' gestational age. METHODS: From 1991 ROP screening was performed in 452 premature infants with either a birth weight < or = 1500 g (n = 303) or a birth weight > 1500 g (n = 149) and who required additional oxygen supplementation or underwent surgery with general anaesthesia before estimated term. RESULTS: Unexpectedly, three infants with birth weights between 2080 and 2325

Impact of multiple births on retinopathy of prematurity in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: To examine how multiple birth status affects the incidence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm infants. With increasing multiple births associated with assisted reproductive technology, this study seeks to clarify these risks independently of gestational age (GA) and birth weight (BW). SUBJECTS/METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 4392 preterm infants screened for ROP between 2010 and 2023. Eligibility criteria were GA ≤ 32 weeks, BW ≤ 2000 g, or unstable clinical conditions. ROP screening results, GA, BW, gender, and multiple

Retinopathy of prematurity in very low birth weight infants.

This study aims to determine the prevalence of and risk factors associated with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. All premature VLBW infants, admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit of the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur, were screened from 4 weeks of life. Perinatal and neonatal data were retrieved from the infants' medical notes. Between August 1994 and July 1996, 100 infants had their eyes examined serially. Of the 15 (15%) infants with ROP, all were less than 31 weeks gestation, and only 1 infant had birth weight above 1250 g. Five (5%) infan

Intergenerational Occurrence of Premature Birth and Reproductive Health in Prematurely-Born Women in the Women's Health Initiative.

OBJECTIVE: To compare reproductive history and postmenopausal health by birth status (preterm vs. full term) in a U.S. longitudinal study of postmenopausal women. Birth status was examined according to region of residence, household, and neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: In the Women's Health Initiative Observational Study, 2271 women were born prematurely (< 37 weeks). ANOVA and Chi-square determined birth status differences of reproductive history, pregnancy, and postmenopausal health. Odds ratios were calculated using either binary logistic or multinomial logistic regressio

The Mediterranean diet adherence by pregnant women delivering prematurely: association with size at birth and complications of prematurity.

Background: The Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with decreased risk of metabolic syndrome and gestational diabetes due to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of its components. The aim was to investigate the potential association of MD adherence (MDA) during pregnancy by mothers delivering prematurely, with intrauterine growth as expressed by neonates' anthropometry at birth and complications of prematurity. Participants and methods: This is a single-center, prospective, observational cohort study of 82 women who delivered preterm singletons at post conceptional age (PCA)

Premature birth: complexities and difficulties in building the mother-child relationship.

AIM: This paper aims to investigate if the dyadic interactive behaviours were influenced by parental stress and feelings both in preterm and full-term mother-child dyads. METHODS: 45 mothers (age = 35.29 ± 5.38) and fathers (age = 36.77 ± 6.89) of preterm infants (GA = 30.25 ± 2.95; BW = 1288.02 ± 488.76), and 36 mothers (age = 32.60 ± 4.56) and fathers (age = 35.54 ± 5.16) of full-term (GA = 39.88 ± 1.38; BW = 3156.39 ± 493.81) were involved. Parents filled out the Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R), Profile of Mood States (POMS) and Parenting Stress Index Short Form (PSI-SF) and interact

Development of the optic radiations and visual function after premature birth.

INTRODUCTION: Visual impairment in preterm infants at term equivalent age (TEA) is associated with impaired microstructural development in the optic radiation, measured as reduced fractional anisotropy (FA) by Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). We tested the hypothesis that these abnormalities develop during the late preterm period. METHODS: DTI was performed in 53 infants born at a median (range) of 30(+1) (25(+4)-34(+6)) weeks post-menstrual age (PMA), 22 of whom were imaged twice. RESULTS: FA in the optic radiation at TEA was related to: visual function (p = .003); PMA at birth (p = .015); a

Determinants of oxidant stress in extremely low birth weight premature infants.

Early in life, premature neonates are at risk of oxidant stress. They often require total parenteral nutrition (TPN), which is, however, contaminated with oxidation products. Coadministration of parenteral multivitamins (MVP) with a lipid emulsion (LIP) prevents lipid peroxidation. We hypothesized that LIP+MVP induces a lower oxidant load compared to preparations in which MVP is administered with an amino acid solution (AA+MVP). The aim of this study was to compare markers of oxidant stress in premature neonates receiving LIP+MVP, either exposed to or protected from light, or AA+MVP. Antioxida

Late gestation cerebellar growth is rapid and impeded by premature birth.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairments and academic failure are commonly reported in survivors of preterm birth. Recent studies suggest an important role for the cerebellum in the development of cognitive and social functions. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of prematurity itself, as well as prematurity-related brain injuries, on early postnatal cerebellar growth with quantitative MRI. METHODS: Advanced 3-dimensional volumetric MRI was performed and cerebellar volumes were obtained by manual outlining in preterm (<37 weeks) and healthy term-born infants. Intracranial and total

Outcome of cardiac surgery in low birth weight and premature infants.

OBJECTIVE: Low birth weight or premature infants may require early surgical treatment of congenital cardiac lesions because of their poor clinical status. Even thought early repair or palliation is carried out with incremental risk factor for morbidity and mortality, it has been demonstrated to be preferable to medical management and delayed surgery. This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate early and mid-term results in infants, weighing less than 2500 g, who underwent surgery other than patent ductus arteriosus closure. METHODS: Since January 1993 to August 2002, 60 consecutive pa
