BACKGROUND: High rates of imprisonment in the U.S. have significant health, social, and economic consequences, particularly for marginalized communities. This study examines imprisonment as a contextual driver of receiving prenatal care by evaluating whether early and adequate prenatal care improved after Pennsylvania's criminal sentencing reform reduced prison admissions.
METHODS: We linked individual-level birth certificate microdata on births (n = 999,503) in Pennsylvania (2009-2015), to monthly county-level rates of prison admissions. We apply an interrupted time series approach that cont

This paper explores the role of maternal drug use and the timing of prenatal care. The study data were collected from women delivering live births at eight participating hospitals in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area Drug Study. An estimated 16.9 percent of the women in this sample initiated prenatal care in their third trimester or received no prenatal care. After adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, education, parity, and attitude toward pregnancy, cocaine use was strongly associated with the timing of prenatal care. Using multivariable ordinal logistic regression, the data suggest signi

This article presents a survey carried out among 2,549 doctors (general practitioners, pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists) practicing in two south of France "departements" (administrative subdivisions): Bouches-du-Rhône and Hautes-Alpes. The influence of socio-demographic and professional characteristics on knowledge of prenatal diagnosis indicators is studied here for each specialty. While knowledge among general practitioners is apparently a product of their formal education, among gynecologists and obstetricians the most important factor seems to be professional experience. Obstetricians may be a pregnant woman's primary professional source of information about her infant prior to the birth, but infant safe sleep knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of this population are unknown. This study explores obstetric physicians' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and infant safe sleep and identifies barriers as well as enabling and/or reinforcing factors associated with providing infant safe sleep education in the prenatal environment. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with obstetric physicians who provide prenatal healthcare

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal supplementation with folic acid and other vitamins has been inconsistently associated with a reduced risk of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Little is known regarding the association with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a rarer subtype.
METHODS: We obtained original data on prenatal use of folic acid and vitamins from 12 case-control studies participating in the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (enrollment period: 1980-2012), including 6,963 cases of ALL, 585 cases of AML, and 11,635 controls. Logistic regression was used to estimate pooled

The interpretation of prenatal screening and follow-up diagnostic testing for neural tube defects is relatively complex and presents unusual demands in terms of informed utilization by pregnant women. Such demands could impact differentially on individuals of different socioeconomic status or cultural values. Accordingly, a two-part questionnaire, interrupted by presentation of educational material on neural tube defects and prenatal screening, was presented to female sophomore medical students and to reproductive-age women whose children were served at Howard University Hospital. Student subj

Prenatal exposure to active maternal tobacco smoking elevates risk of cognitive and auditory processing deficits, and of smoking in offspring. Recent preclinical work has demonstrated a sex-specific pattern of reduction in cortical cholinergic markers following prenatal, adolescent, or combined prenatal and adolescent exposure to nicotine, the primary psychoactive component of tobacco smoke. Given the importance of cortical cholinergic neurotransmission to attentional function, we examined auditory and visual selective and divided attention in 181 male and female adolescent smokers and nonsmok

OBJECTIVE: Mothers are known to be reliable reporters of smoking during pregnancy, type of delivery, and birth weight when compared with medical records. Few studies have considered whether the timing of retrospective collection affects the mother's retrospective self-report. We examined the consistency of maternal retrospective recall of prenatal experiences, behaviors, and basic birth outcomes between 6 months and 8 years postpartum.
METHOD: We examined 117 mothers (62% White, 44% living in a committed relationship, median high school education) from the Early Growth and Development Study (

OBJECTIVE: A growing body of research has investigated the human microbiota and pregnancy outcomes, especially preterm birth. Most studies of the prenatal microbiota have focused on the vagina, with fewer investigating other body sites during pregnancy. Although pregnancy involves profound hormonal, immunological and metabolic changes, few studies have investigated either shifts in microbiota composition across pregnancy at different body sites or variation in composition at any site that may be explained by maternal characteristics. The purpose of this study was to investigate: (1) the stabil
