Prehabilitation in Adults Undergoing Cancer Surgery: A Comprehensive Review on Rationale, Methodology, and Measures of Effectiveness.

Cancer surgery places a significant burden on a patients' functional status and quality of life. In addition, cancer surgery is fraught with postoperative complications, themselves influenced by a patient's functional status. Prehabilitation is a unimodal or multimodal strategy that aims to increase a patient's functional capacity to reduce postoperative complications and improve postoperative recovery and quality of life. In most cases, it involves exercise, nutrition, and anxiety-reducing interventions. The impact of prehabilitation has been explored in several types of cancer surgery, most

Long-term results of a short-term home-based pre- and postoperative exercise intervention on physical recovery after colorectal cancer surgery (PHYSSURG-C): a randomized clinical trial.

AIM: The aim of this work was to assess the effect of a short-term, home-based exercise intervention before and after colorectal cancer surgery on 12-month physical recovery within a previously reported randomized control trial (RCT). METHOD: PHYSSURG-C is an RCT in six participating hospitals in Sweden. Patients aged ≥20 years planned for elective colorectal cancer surgery were eligible. The intervention consisted of unsupervised moderate-intensity physical activity 2 weeks preoperatively and 4 weeks postoperatively. Usual care was control. The primary outcome measure in PHYSSURG-C was self-

Enhancing Quality of Life in Head and Neck Cancer: A Scoping Review on the Role of Physical Prehabilitation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Head and neck cancer presents a significant challenge for patients. Beyond the direct impact of the disease, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, while essential for cancer control, can further compromise patients' quality of life (QoL) and emotional well-being, while also introducing additional complications. These treatments may exacerbate existing cancer-related symptoms and contribute to malnutrition. This review aimed to identify and evaluate physical prehabilitation interventions implemented before or during radiotherapy/chemotherapy treatments to determine their impact on the

Aortic occlusion and lower extremity exercise induced stress urinary incontinence.

An unusual case of intermittent stress urinary incontinence associated with lower extremity exercise in a patient with aortoiliac occlusive disease is reported. Preoperative noninvasive vascular testing revealed severe compromise of lower extremity and pelvic blood flow. Fluoroscopically guided preoperative urodynamic evaluation without exercise revealed a competent urethral sphincter mechanism that became incompetent following exercise sufficient to induce claudication. The claudication and exercise-induced incontinence resolved after aortobifemoral bypass, and postoperative urodynamic studie

Left ventricular performance after coronary artery bypass surgery. Prediction of functional benefit.

Global left ventricular performance (ejection fraction) and regional function were studied by rest-exercise radionuclide ventriculography in 36 patients before and after (23 +/- 8.5 wk) they had coronary artery bypass surgery for stable angina pectoris. The exercise ejection fraction was less than the resting ejection fraction before surgery (n = 36,p = 0.006), but not after surgery. The degree of postoperative improvement correlated with the degree of preoperative dysfunction (r = 0.55, n = 36, p less than 0.001). Improvement was most likely to occur if exercise-induced dysfunction was presen

Spectrum of exercise intolerance in 45 patients with Ebstein's anomaly and observations on exercise tolerance in 11 patients after surgical repair.

To determine the effects of definitive operation for Ebstein's anomaly on rest and exercise cardiorespiratory function, cycle exercise studies were performed on 38 patients with Ebstein's anomaly before definitive operation and on 11 patients after operation. An atrial septal defect was present in 29 of the 38 preoperative patients and in none of the postoperative patients. Seven of the postoperative patients had tricuspid valvuloplasty and four had valve replacement. Exercise tolerance, as defined by maximal oxygen uptake, was significantly greater in patients after operation for Ebstein's an

Prehabilitation of kidney transplant candidates - a narrative review.

Patients with end-stage renal failure frequently present with weakened physical and mental conditions and comorbidities. The results of post-organ transplantation treatment depend not only on the surgical procedure itself, but also on the patient's health before surgery. Solutions continue to be sought to improve these results. The aim of this study was to review the current knowledge on prehabilitation in kidney recipients, including the key components of the approach, and to analyze the scientific evidence regarding its effectiveness. Recommendations of the Polish as well as international tr

Prehabilitation in older adults with cancer: scoping review of surgical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Adults aged ≥65 years constitute a growing proportion of surgical oncology patients and often experience frailty, multimorbidity and reduced physiological reserve, increasing their risk of postoperative complications and functional decline. Multimodal prehabilitation has emerged as a strategy to improve surgical resilience; however, evidence specific to older cancer patients' remains fragmented. This study aimed to map the existing evidence on prehabilitation for older adult patients undergoing cancer surgery, characterise intervention components, summarise functional and surgical

Prehabilitation and Immunonutrition in Pancreatic Cancer Therapy.

Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease with demanding therapies. Patients often present physically and nutritionally debilitated and then are required to undergo rigorous chemotherapy and/or chemoradiation, as well as operative interventions. Ensuring that patients are physically, nutritionally, and psychosocially supported may promote tolerance of neoadjuvant treatments to ensure progression to and success of surgery.
