Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is associated with periodontitis. Anti-Porphyromonas gingivalis and anti-Prevotella intermedia antibody titers were higher in patients with spondyloarthritis than in healthy people. Sulfasalazine is an effective antibiotic treatment for AS. Moxifloxacin and rifamycin were also found to be significantly effective. The etiology hypothesis suggests that oral anaerobic bacteria such as Porphyromonas spp and Prevotella spp contribute to the disease. These bacteria have been identified in AS, and we will discuss their pathogenic properties with respect to our knowledge of

BACKGROUND: As periodontitis progresses, the oral microbiota community changes dynamically. In this study, we evaluated the dominant bacteria and their roles in the potential pathway in young males with stage III periodontitis.
METHODS: 16S rRNA sequencing was performed to evaluate variations in the composition of oral bacteria between males with stage I and III periodontitis and identify the dominant bacteria of each group. Function prediction was obtained based on 16S rRNA sequencing data. The inhibitor of the predominant pathway for stage III periodontitis was used to investigate the role

This review summarizes the information that supports the potential importance of anaerobic bacteria in tonsillitis. Some anaerobic bacteria possess interfering capability with Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) and other pathogens. The possible role of anaerobes in the acute inflammatory process in the tonsils is supported by several observations: anaerobes have been isolated from the cores of tonsils of patients with recurrent GABHS and non-GABHS tonsillitis (NST); the recovery of anaerobes as predominant pathogens in abscesses of tonsils, in many cases without any aerobic bacteria;

The role of four oral organisms (Fusobacterium nucleatum. Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) was investigated in 19 children with peritonsillar abscess, and 17 with peritonsillar cellulitis. Antibody titers to these organisms were measured by enzyme- linked immunosorbent assay in the patient, as well as in 32 control patients. Serum levels in the patients were determined at day 1 and 42-56 days later. Significantly higher antibody levels to F. nucleatum and P. intermedia were found in the second serum sample of patients with peritonsillar

Species now affiliated to genus Prevotella have been known for decades as an integral part of human oral cavity microbiota. They were frequently isolated from patients with periodontitis or from dental root canals but also from healthy subjects. With the exception of Prevotella intermedia, they were considered opportunistic pathogens, as they were isolated also from various bacterial abscesses from the head, neck, breast, skin and various other body sites. Consequently, Prevotella were not in the focus of research activities. On the other hand, the four species found in the rumen never caused

The loads and locations of bacterial types associated with oral malodour on the tongue surface and gingival crevice were investigated in man and the dog respectively. In the human study, samples were taken from 50 subjects with brushes at the dorsal anterior, dorsal middle, dorsal posterior, dorsal posterior to the circumvallate papillae (DPCP), lateral posterior and ventral posterior (VP) surfaces, and cultured appropriately. Malodour was assessed by trained judges. Mean volatile sulfur compound (VSC) producing bacterial counts (colony forming units/brush × 10(5)) were found to be highest (88

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by microbial infections of the gum. At an advanced stage, periodontitis can even destroy the alveolar bone. Fusobacterium nucleatum, Prevotella intermedia, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Capnocytophaga gingivalis, and Pr. nigrescens are the major pathogens in periodontitis. Scaling and root planning are used together with local or systemic antibiotics to treat periodontitis. The difficulty in complete eradication of periodontal pathogens frequently leads to the relapse of the disease. As not many new antibiotics

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to characterize and compare subgingival and salivary microbiotas before and after periodontal treatment to learn if any changes of the subgingival microbiota were reflected in saliva. We tested the hypothesis that salivary levels of specific periopathogens correlate with corresponding subgingival levels before and after periodontal treatment.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with generalized chronic periodontitis completed the study. Stimulated saliva samples and subgingival plaque samples were collected at baseline and 2, 6, and 12 weeks after nonsurgic

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral diseases. It is caused by dental plaque and by the factors produced/released from it. The black pigmented bacteria in subgingival dental plaque are thought to be the periodontopathogens. Prevotella intermedia and Porphyromonas gingivalis have been shown to be closely associated with human gingivitis. Prevetella intermedia can use female sex hormones such as progesterone or estradiol as a source of nutrients. In pregnant women, the concentrations of progesterone and estradiol are markedly increased in serum and both are accumulated and found in the ging

A complex balanced equilibrium of the bacterial ecosystems exists in the oral cavity that can be altered by tobacco smoking, psychological stressors, bad dietary habit, and chronic periodontitis. Oral dysbiosis can promote the onset and progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) through the release of toxins and bacterial metabolites, stimulating local and systemic inflammation, and altering the host immune response. During the process of carcinogenesis, the composition of the bacterial community changes qualitatively and quantitatively. Bacterial profiles are characterized by targeted
