Computational design and nonlinear dynamics of a recurrent network model of the primary visual cortex.

Recurrent interactions in the primary visual cortex make its output a complex nonlinear transform of its input. This transform serves preattentive visual segmentation, that is, autonomously processing visual inputs to give outputs that selectively emphasize certain features for segmentation. An analytical understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of the recurrent neural circuit is essential to harness its computational power. We derive requirements on the neural architecture, components, and connection weights of a biologically plausible model of the cortex such that region segmentation, figure-

Actions of compounds manipulating the nitric oxide system in the cat primary visual cortex.

1. We iontophoretically applied NG-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOArg), an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), to cells (n = 77) in area 17 of anaesthetized and paralysed cats while recording single-unit activity extracellularly. In twenty-nine out of seventy-seven cells (38%), compounds altering NO levels affected visual responses. 2. In twenty-five out of twenty-nine cells, L-NOArg non-selectively reduced visually elicited responses and spontaneous activity. These effects were reversed by co-application of L-arginine (L-Arg), which was without effect when applied alone. Application of the NO do

Analysis of primary visual cortex in dementia with Lewy bodies indicates GABAergic involvement associated with recurrent complex visual hallucinations.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) patients frequently experience well formed recurrent complex visual hallucinations (RCVH). This is associated with reduced blood flow or hypometabolism on imaging of the primary visual cortex. To understand these associations in DLB we used pathological and biochemical analysis of the primary visual cortex to identify changes that could underpin RCVH. Alpha-synuclein or neurofibrillary tangle pathology in primary visual cortex was essentially absent. Neurone density or volume within the primary visual cortex in DLB was also unchanged using unbiased stereology. M

Impaired visual information processing in alcohol-dependent subjects: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study of the primary visual cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic alcoholism is associated with impaired cognitive abilities, with a more severe deficit in visual than in verbal functions. The visual processing deficits have classically been associated with impaired function of the visual cortex, located in the occipital lobe. The present study sought to increase current understanding of the impaired visual processing abilities in alcohol-dependent subjects and their correlation with metabolic aberrations in the occipital lobe using in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H MRS). METHOD: To that end, ¹H MRS was carried out in the

Primary Visual Cortex Contributes to Color Constancy by Predicting Rather than Discounting the Illuminant.

Color constancy (CC) is an important ability of the human visual system to stably perceive the colors of objects despite considerable changes in the color of the light illuminating them. While increasing evidence from the field of neuroscience supports that multiple levels of the visual system contribute to the realization of CC, how the primary visual cortex (V1) plays role in CC is not fully resolved. In specific, double-opponent (DO) neurons in V1 have been thought to contribute to realizing a degree of CC, but the computational mechanism is not clear. This work builds an electrophysiologic

Altered functional connectivity strength of primary visual cortex in subjects with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy.

Our objective was to explore the disparities in the intrinsic functional connectivity (FC) patterns of primary visual cortex (V1) between patients with thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) and healthy controls (HCs) utilizing resting-state functional MRI. Twenty-one patients with TAO (14 males and 7 females; mean age: 54.17 ± 4.83 years) and 21 well-matched HCs (14 males and 7 females; mean age: 55.17 ± 5.37 years) underwent functional MRI scans in the resting-state. We assessed modifications in the intrinsic FC patterns of the V1 in TAO patients using the FC method. Subsequently, the ident

Transsynaptic Degeneration of Retinal Ganglion Cells Following Lesions to Primary Visual Cortex in Marmosets.

PURPOSE: A lesion to primary visual cortex (V1) in primates can produce retrograde transneuronal degeneration in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and retina. We investigated the effect of age at time of lesion on LGN volume and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) density in marmoset monkeys. METHODS: Retinas and LGNs were obtained about 2 years after a unilateral left-sided V1 lesion as infants (n = 7) or young adult (n = 1). Antibodies against RBPMS were used to label all RGCs, and antibodies against CaMKII or GABAA receptors were used to label nonmidget RGCs. Cell densities were compared

Electrophysiology Alterations in Primary Visual Cortex Neurons of Retinal Degeneration (S334ter-line-3) Rats.

The dynamic nature of the brain is critical for the success of treatments aimed at restoring vision at the retinal level. The success of these treatments relies highly on the functionality of the surviving neurons along the entire visual pathway. Electrophysiological properties at the retina level have been investigated during the progression of retinal degeneration; however, little is known about the changes in electrophysiological properties that occur in the primary visual cortex (V1) during the course of retinal degeneration. By conducting extracellular recording, we examined the electroph

Aging Affects Fine and Coarse Coding of Orientation Information in Macaque Primary Visual Cortex.

Human visual function degrades with age. Previous studies of visual perception have shown that aged people have worse performance in the coding of orientation information. However, the neuronal mechanism still remains elusive. In this study, we performed in vivo extracellular single-unit recording in the primary visual cortex of senescent and young monkeys, and we used the Chernoff distance to quantify the encoded information of neurons for fine and coarse orientation difference. Our results showed that the Chernoff distance for fine orientation difference in senescent monkeys is significantly

Retinotopic-like maps of spatial sound in primary 'visual' cortex of blind human echolocators.

The functional specializations of cortical sensory areas were traditionally viewed as being tied to specific modalities. A radically different emerging view is that the brain is organized by task rather than sensory modality, but it has not yet been shown that this applies to primary sensory cortices. Here, we report such evidence by showing that primary 'visual' cortex can be adapted to map spatial locations of sound in blind humans who regularly perceive space through sound echoes. Specifically, we objectively quantify the similarity between measured stimulus maps for sound eccentricity and

A dedicated circuit links direction-selective retinal ganglion cells to the primary visual cortex.

How specific features in the environment are represented within the brain is an important unanswered question in neuroscience. A subset of retinal neurons, called direction-selective ganglion cells (DSGCs), are specialized for detecting motion along specific axes of the visual field. Despite extensive study of the retinal circuitry that endows DSGCs with their unique tuning properties, their downstream circuitry in the brain and thus their contribution to visual processing has remained unclear. In mice, several different types of DSGCs connect to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), t

Pathological changes in the primary visual cortex (area V1) in sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

PURPOSE: To determine the degree of pathological change in the primary visual cortex (area V1) in patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. METHOD: The vacuolation, surviving neurons, glial cells, and deposits of prion protein were quantified in area V1 obtained postmortem in nine cases of the sporadic type of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. RESULTS: Variations in the density of glial cells and in prion protein deposition were particularly evident between patients. In the upper and lower cortical laminae, vacuoles and prion protein deposits were regularly distributed in clusters with a mean dimens

Graded sparing of visually-guided orienting following primary visual cortex ablations within the first postnatal month.

We compared the abilities of intact cats and cats that incurred lesions of areas 17 and 18 in adulthood, at one month of age (P28), or on the day of birth (P1), to detect and orient towards visual stimuli either moved into or illuminated in the periphery of the visual field, and to detect and orient towards a stationary, broad-band white-noise auditory stimulus. For all groups of cats, movement of a stimulus into the visual field was a more potent stimulus for evoking visually-guided orienting movements than illumination of a static light-emitting diode (LED). The potency of the auditory stimu

Modulation of primary motor cortex outputs from ventral premotor cortex during visually guided grasp in the macaque monkey.

Area F5, in the ventral premotor cortex of the macaque monkey, plays a critical role in determining the hand shape appropriate for grasp of a visible object. F5 neurones show increased firing for particular types of grasp, and inactivation of F5 produces deficits in visually guided grasp. But how is F5 activity transformed into the appropriate pattern of hand muscle activity for efficient grasp? Here we investigate the pathways that may be involved by testing the effect of single stimuli delivered through microwires chronically implanted in area F5 and in primary motor cortex (M1) of two macaq

Simultaneous neuron evidence for much higher covariation with saccadic reaction time of superior colliculus than primary visual cortex visual responses.

Visual response strength in the primate superior colliculus (SC) has recently been shown to inversely correlate with trial-by-trial saccadic reaction time in a much stronger way than visual response strength in the primary visual cortex (V1). However, for any given visual stimulus onset, populations of neurons in each brain area are concurrently activated, leaving open the question of how V1 visual response strength can predict trial-by-trial saccadic reaction time when multiple simultaneously recorded neurons are taken into account. Using a classic visually guided saccade task, here we assess

Opposing Somatic and Dendritic Expression of Stimulus-Selective Response Plasticity in Mouse Primary Visual Cortex.

Daily exposure of awake mice to a phase-reversing visual grating stimulus leads to enhancement of the visual-evoked potential (VEP) in layer 4 of the primary visual cortex (V1). This stimulus-selective response potentiation (SRP) resembles and shares mechanistic requirements with canonical long-term synaptic potentiation (LTP). However, it remains to be determined how this augmentation of a population response translates into altered neuronal activity of individual V1 neurons. To address this question, we performed longitudinal calcium imaging of layer 4 excitatory neurons in V1 and tracked ch

Altered functional interactions between neurons in primary visual cortex of macaque monkeys with experimental amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a disorder in which vision through one of the eyes is degraded, arises because of defective processing of information by the visual system. Amblyopia often develops in humans after early misalignment of the eyes (strabismus) and can be simulated in macaque monkeys by artificially inducing strabismus. In such amblyopic animals, single-unit responses in primary visual cortex (V1) are appreciably reduced when evoked by the amblyopic eye compared with the other (fellow) eye. However, this degradation in single V1 neuron responsivity is not commensurate with the marked losses in visual s

Unidirectional monosynaptic connections from auditory areas to the primary visual cortex in the marmoset monkey.

Until the late twentieth century, it was believed that different sensory modalities were processed by largely independent pathways in the primate cortex, with cross-modal integration only occurring in specialized polysensory areas. This model was challenged by the finding that the peripheral representation of the primary visual cortex (V1) receives monosynaptic connections from areas of the auditory cortex in the macaque. However, auditory projections to V1 have not been reported in other primates. We investigated the existence of direct interconnections between V1 and auditory areas in the ma
