On people's understanding of the diagnostic implications of probabilistic data.

Two lines of prior research into the conditions under which people seek information are examined in light of two statistical definitions of diagnosticity. Five experiments are reported. In two, subjects selected information in order to test a hypothesis. In the remaining three, they selected information in order to convince someone else of the truth of a known hypothesis. A total of 567 university students served as subjects. The two primary conclusions were as follows: (1) When the task is highly structured by the environment, subjects select information diagnostically, and (2) when the task

Guidance of attention by statistical learning when multiple guidance mechanisms compete.

Previous research has shown that people are sensitive to statistical regularities and will implicitly learn to bias attention toward locations and features frequently associated with search targets. However, most prior work has involved a single biasing contingency. In Experiment 1, we investigate whether individuals can simultaneously learn and implement two distinct contingencies: one based on location and another based on color. The results suggest that both contingencies are learned implicitly and exert independent effects on attentional allocation. Experiments 2 and 3 examine whether shif

Neural representations of statistical and rule-based predictions in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is a disorder characterised by motor and vocal tics, which may represent habitual actions as a result of enhanced learning of associations between stimuli and responses (S-R). In this study, we investigated how adults with GTS and healthy controls (HC) learn two types of regularities in a sequence: statistics (non-adjacent probabilities) and rules (predefined order). Participants completed a visuomotor sequence learning task while EEG was recorded. To understand the neurophysiological underpinnings of these regularities in GTS, multivariate pattern analyses

Probabilistic category learning in developmental dyslexia: Evidence from feedback and paired-associate weather prediction tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Developmental dyslexia is presumed to arise from specific phonological impairments. However, an emerging theoretical framework suggests that phonological impairments may be symptoms stemming from an underlying dysfunction of procedural learning. METHOD: We tested procedural learning in adults with dyslexia (n = 15) and matched-controls (n = 15) using 2 versions of the weather prediction task: feedback (FB) and paired-associate (PA). In the FB-based task, participants learned associations between cues and outcomes initially by guessing and subsequently through feedback indicating th

EquiFL-X: Communication-constrained federated calibration via label-aggregated histograms for multi-view screening mammography under acquisition shift.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reliable probability estimates and robust performance across heterogeneous acquisition settings are important for artificial intelligence-assisted screening mammography. In federated learning, acquisition-driven non-identically distributed data can impair both discrimination and calibration across clients. This study aimed to develop a federated multi-view mammography framework that improves worst-client robustness and probability calibration while avoiding calibration procedures that require sharing instance-level prediction-label pairs. METHODS: We proposed EquiFL-

Statistics in Motion: Does the Infant Motor System Predict Actions Based on Their Transitional Probability?

Motor theories of action prediction propose that our neural motor system combines prior knowledge about action outcomes with current sensory input to predict other people's behavior. This knowledge can be acquired through observational experience, more specifically statistical learning. Recently, it has been shown that infants can detect in a stream of actions two actions that follow each other deterministically and that their motor system uses this knowledge to predict upcoming actions. However, real-life actions are more complex: actions rarely follow one another with 100% probability, certa

Sleeping neonates track transitional probabilities in speech but only retain the first syllable of words.

Extracting statistical regularities from the environment is a primary learning mechanism that might support language acquisition. While it has been shown that infants are sensitive to transition probabilities between syllables in speech, it is still not known what information they encode. Here we used electrophysiology to study how full-term neonates process an artificial language constructed by randomly concatenating four pseudo-words and what information they retain after a few minutes of exposure. Neural entrainment served as a marker of the regularities the brain was tracking during learni

Unpacking unpacking: greater detail can reduce perceived likelihood.

Past research suggests that a categorical event is perceived to be more likely if its subcases are explicitly delineated or "unpacked." In 6 studies, we find that unpacking can often make an event seem less likely, especially when the details being unpacked are already highly accessible. Process evidence shows that the provision of greater detail accompanying unpacking reduces the simplicity of an event and that this dysfluency is used as a negative cue for likelihood. This work establishes processing fluency as a mechanism that opposes the other effects of unpacking, such as enhanced accessib

Top-down predictions in the cognitive brain.

The human brain is not a passive organ simply waiting to be activated by external stimuli. Instead, we propose that the brain continuously employs memory of past experiences to interpret sensory information and predict the immediately relevant future. The basic elements of this proposal include analogical mapping, associative representations and the generation of predictions. This review concentrates on visual recognition as the model system for developing and testing ideas about the role and mechanisms of top-down predictions in the brain. We cover relevant behavioral, computational and neura

Direct risk aversion: evidence from risky prospects valued below their worst outcome.

Why would people pay more for a $50 gift certificate than for the opportunity to receive a gift certificate worth either $50 or $100, with equal probability? This article examines three possible mechanisms for this recently documented uncertainty effect (UE): First, awareness of the better outcome may devalue the worse one. Second, the UE may have arisen in the original demonstration of this effect because participants misunderstood the instructions. Third, the UE may be due to direct risk aversion, that is, actual distaste for uncertainty. In Experiment 1, the UE was observed even though part

Generating Complex Explanations for Artificial Intelligence Models: An Application to Clinical Data on Severe Mental Illness.

We present an explainable artificial intelligence methodology for predicting mortality in patients. We combine clinical data from an electronic patient healthcare record system with factors relevant for severe mental illness and then apply machine learning. The machine learning model is used to predict mortality in patients with severe mental illness. Our methodology uses class-contrastive reasoning. We show how machine learning scientists can use class-contrastive reasoning to generate complex explanations that explain machine model predictions and data. An example of a complex class-contrast

Learning deficits and early school leaving: Evidence from a longitudinal study in India.

Although the relationship between learning deficits (LD) and early school leaving (ESL) is extensively acknowledged in studies from the Global North, fewer studies from the Global South have examined this relationship. We examined the levels and patterns of ESL among adolescents, relationship between LD and ESL and the gender dimensions, if any, in this relationship in India. We used data from a state-representative longitudinal study of adolescents aged 10-19 in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh states of India, conducted in 2015-16 and 2018-19. Descriptive analysis drew on data from adolescents ever e

Predicting unknown mammalian viral hosts with Dynamic Positive-Unlabeled learning.

Most emerging infectious diseases in humans are zoonotic in origin. Yet, knowledge of host-pathogen associations remains limited. Machine learning models have been increasingly used to infer missing zoonotic host-pathogen associations, but face challenges due to biased data and the absence of confirmed negative cases. Here, we introduce Dynamic Positive-Unlabeled (DPU) learning, a semi-supervised framework for predicting missing links in incomplete, biased networks. DPU learning integrates a propensity score model that estimates the probability of observing existing links with a classifier tha

The skill of tracheal intubation with rigid scopes - a randomised controlled trial comparing learning curves in 740 intubations.

BACKGROUND: Rigid scopes are successfully used for management of difficult airways, but learning curves have not been established. METHODS: This randomised controlled trial was performed at the University Hospital Bern in Switzerland to establish learning curves for the rigid scopes Bonfils and SensaScope and to assess their performance. Fifteen consultant anaesthetists and 15 anaesthesia registrars performed a total of 740 intubations (10 to 20 intubations with each device per physician) in adult patients without predictors of a difficult airway under general anaesthesia. Feedback produces divergence from prospect theory in descriptive choice.

A recent study demonstrated that individuals making experience-based choices underweight small probabilities, in contrast to the overweighting observed in a typical descriptive paradigm. We tested whether trial-by-trial feedback in a repeated descriptive paradigm would engender choices more correspondent with experiential or descriptive paradigms. The results of a repeated gambling task indicated that individuals receiving feedback underweighted small probabilities, relative to their no-feedback counterparts. These results implicate feedback as a critical component during the decision-making p

How Uncertainty Affects Children's Exploration and Exploitation in Statistical Learning.

Environmental input is inherently uncertain at both global and local levels. Depending on the level of uncertainty, cognitive systems dynamically adapt by shifting attention between exploiting learned regularities and exploring less predictable alternatives. While these dynamics are well documented in adults, how local and global uncertainty jointly influences children's exploration-exploitation strategies during statistical learning remains unclear. Combining eye-tracking with a probabilistic cueing task, this study quantified local and global uncertainty on a trial-by-trial basis to examine

Atypical mechanisms of visual statistical learning in children with developmental language disorder: An fMRI study.

Symptoms of developmental language disorder (DLD) may in part result from an underlying deficit in statistical learning (SL). This learning deficit may be related to the ability to extract probabilistic properties of events in the environment, which is linked to the functions of cortical and subcortical brain regions underlying SL. Using a behavioral SL task and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we tested sequential SL ability in the visual domain and its neural correlates in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers. During fMRI, children performed SL tasks invol

Multiple-cue probabilistic learning in spider-fearful and in panic-prone individuals.

Probabilistic learning was studied in spider-fearful and in panic-prone individuals. Participants learned to predict the occurrence of aversive outcomes on the basis of relevant and irrelevant stimuli. The salience of irrelevant stimuli was manipulated by the use of threat-related objects, i.e. pictures of spiders and pictures of emergency situations. In spider-fearful individuals, the presence of irrelevant pictures of spiders interfered with the adequate acquisition of the association between neutral relevant stimuli and aversive outcomes. Salient, i.e. threat-related, irrelevant stimuli exe
