Probiotics in human milk and probiotic supplementation in infant nutrition: a workshop report.

Probiotics in human milk are a very recent field of research, as the existence of the human milk microbiome was discovered only about a decade ago. Current research is focusing on bacterial diversity and the influence of the maternal environment as well as the mode of delivery on human milk microbiota, the pathways of bacterial transfer to milk ducts, possible benefits of specific bacterial strains for the treatment of mastitis in mothers, and disease prevention in children. Recent advances in the assessment of early host-microbe interactions suggest that early colonisation may have an impact

[Lactobacilli and their probiotic properties].

Lactobacilli rank among lactic acid bacteria, fermenting saccharides to produce lactic acid. The individual species and strains differ by the profiles of fermented saccharides, but this property is not sufficient for the identification at the species level. The species and strains differ in the 16S rDNA sequence and in the intergenic space between 16S and 23S rDNA, which make their differentiation and identification possible. Some representatives of the genus Lactobacillus are included in probiotic preparations with regard to their beneficial health effects on the human and animal organisms. F

Recommendations for probiotic use.

Probiotics are live microbial organisms that are administrated as supplements or in foods to benefit the host. It is the recommendation that they may be helpful in the prevention and treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children, the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in adults and children, and the maintenance of remission and prevention of pouchitis. Although early results indicate that probiotics may also be useful in immunologic modulation to prevent atopy, treatment of radiation intestinal disease, vaginosis, ulcerative colitis, and the irritable bowel syndrome, the studies

Probiotics as Potential Enhancers of Veterinary Vaccines.

Viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases in food-producing and companion animals are permanent problems for humankind. Research to solve this concern includes those based on modulation of the immune system, such as probiotic supplementation and vaccination. Vaccines are a cheap alternative to prevent and control diseases, while probiotics provide several health benefits to the host, including immunostimulation. Research on unified strategies has been scarcely explored, but the current results evidence that probiotics can serve as potentiators of vaccines. Yeast and bacterial probiotic suppleme

Probiotics for caries prevention: A narrative review.

Dental caries, a widespread global health problem, results from oral microbiome dysbiosis dominated by acidogenic pathogens like Streptococcus mutans. Conventional preventive methods, such as fluoride and antimicrobial rinses, often lack specificity and can disrupt beneficial microbes. Probiotics are live, health-promoting bacteria or yeasts commonly found in foods such as yogurt or in dietary supplements. They help restore microbial balance and have emerged as a promising strategy for caries management. This review explores the mechanisms, efficacy, and clinical applications of probiotics in

Probiotics Supplementation in Tuberculosis: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aims to synthesize the current clinical evidence on probiotics used in tuberculosis (TB). Systematic literature searches were conducted across PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases to identify all studies using probiotics in TB. A total of six studies conducted between 2016 and 2023 were found and included in this review. All the studies incorporated probiotics supplementation not beyond the intensive phase of antitubercular therapy (ATT), ranging from three to eight weeks. Five out of six included studies focused on pulmonary TB. Probiotics alleviate adverse gastrointestina

Probiotics in the Management of Vulvovaginal Candidosis.

Vulvovaginal candidosis (VVC) represents a frequent and cumbersome vaginal infection. Recurrent and/or persistent infections remain common among a significant number of patients despite the use of antifungals. Probiotics offer a promising adjunctive or alternative therapeutic strategy to antifungals in the management of VVC. We aimed to explore and thoroughly examine the various roles and potential applications of probiotics in VVC. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify relevant clinical trials and systematic reviews that examine the effectiveness of probiotics in the tre

Probiotics in Dermatology: An Evidence-based Approach.

Probiotics are viable microorganisms that confer health benefits when administered to the host in adequate amounts. Over the past decade, there has been a growing demand for the use of oral and topical probiotics in several inflammatory conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne vulgaris, etc., although their role in a few areas still remains controversial. The objective of this article is to shed light on understanding the origin and implications of microbiota in the pathophysiology of these dermatological conditions and the effect of probiotic usage. We have conducted a comprehens

The role of probiotics in vaginal health.

Probiotics have been widely used in the treatment of intestinal diseases, but the effect of probiotics on female reproductive tract health is still controversial. Lactobacillus is the most abundant microorganism in the vagina, which is related to the vaginal mucosal barrier. Lactobacillus adheres to the vaginal epithelium and can competitively antagonize the colonization of pathogens. The factors produced by Lactobacillus, such as bacteriocin and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), can inhibit the growth of pathogenic microorganisms and maintain the low pH environment of the vagina. Probiotics play an i

Cervicovaginal microbiome dynamics after taking oral probiotics.

The vaginal microbiota is less complex than the gut microbiota, and the colonization of Lactobacillus in the female vagina is considered to be critical for reproductive health. Oral probiotics have been suggested as promising means to modulate vaginal homeostasis in the general population. In this study, 60 Chinese women were followed for over a year before, during, and after treatment with the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillusreuteri RC-14. Shotgun metagenomic data of 1334 samples from multiple body sites did not support a colonization route of the probiotics from the

Enterococci: Between Emerging Pathogens and Potential Probiotics.

Enterococci are ubiquitous microorganisms that could be found everywhere; in water, plant, soil, foods, and gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. They were previously used as starters in food fermentation due to their biotechnological traits (enzymatic and proteolytic activities) or protective cultures in food biopreservation due to their produced antimicrobial bacteriocins called enterocins or as probiotics, live cells with different beneficial characteristics such as stimulation of immunity, anti-inflammatory activity, hypocholesterolemic effect, and prevention/treatment of some dise

Selection of New Probiotics for Endometrial Health.

Microbiota is a crucial player in gynecologic health, in which bacteria can shift to a dysbiotic state triggering a pathogenic process. Based on an ecological understanding of the problem, the aim of this study is to select a potential probiotic strain to improve female reproductive tract based on its capacity to initially lower pH and to promote the reduction of pathogenic bacteria. Based on this rationale, strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus BPL005 was initially selected for its capacity to reduce in vitro pH levels and produce organic acids. Subsequently, strain L. rhamnosus BPL005 (CECT 8800) w

Probiotics: A Promising Role in Dental Health.

Probiotics have a role in maintaining oral health through interaction with oral microbiome, thus contributing to healthy microbial equilibrium. The nature and composition of any individual microbiome impacts the general health, being a major contributor to oral health. The emergence of drug resistance and the side effects of available antimicrobials have restricted their use in an array of prophylactic options. Indeed, some new strategies to prevent oral diseases are based on manipulating oral microbiota, which is provided by probiotics. Currently, no sufficient substantial evidence exists to

PROBIOTICS - A PROBABLE THERAPEUTIC AGENT FOR SPONDYLOARTHROPATHY.

Spondyloarthropathy (SpA) or spondyloarthrosis refers to any joint disease of the vertebral column. Among the entities of SpA, ankylosing spondylitis has drawn the attention of some researchers, because of its specific mechanism of disease progression. It has been studied earlier that its progression is due to the presence of HLA (human leukocyte antigen) - B27. It shows molecular similarity and immunological cross-reactivity with some of the gut microbiome. Since SpA could be treated or its symptoms could be lessen by medications, but medications itself show many side effects and other compli

Probiotics in the dental practice: a review.

During the last decade an increased interest in alternative, preventive, and therapeutic strategies in dentistry has arisen. Probiotics are living microorganisms which, if administered in sufficient amounts, provide a health benefit to the host. Their precise mechanisms of action have not been identified, but they are able to interfere with the imbalance occurring in biofilm-associated infections. In other fields of medicine, mainly in gastroenterology, their usefulness is already proven. Concerning oral threats, probiotic bacteria may reduce the numbers of pathogens associated with dental car

Cytotoxicity of lapachol metabolites produced by probiotics.

UNLABELLED: Probiotics are currently added to a variety of functional foods to provide health benefits to the host and are commonly used by patients with gastrointestinal complaints or diseases. The therapeutic effects of lapachol continue to inspire studies to obtain derivatives with improved bioactivity and lower unwanted effects. Therefore, the general goal of this study was to show that probiotics are able to convert lapachol and are important to assess the effects of bacterial metabolism on drug performance and toxicity. The microbial transformations of lapachol were carried out by Bifido

Probiotics in the management of lung diseases.

The physiology and pathology of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts are closely related. This similarity between the two organs may underlie why dysfunction in one organ may induce illness in the other. For example, smoking is a major risk factor for COPD and IBD and increases the risk of developing Crohn's disease. Probiotics have been defined as "live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer health benefits on the host." In model systems probiotics regulate innate and inflammatory immune responses. Commonly used probiotics include lactic acid bacteria, part
