Specialized and versatile antisocial behavioral profiles in preschoolers: Associations with persistent behavioral problems.

This study investigated specialized and versatile antisocial patterns in preschoolers and examined the link between these patterns and the risk of developing chronic antisocial behaviors throughout childhood. A total of 556 children (50.6% boys, 88% White) participated in this three-wave longitudinal study at 3-5, 6-8, and 10-12 years old. A latent transition analysis revealed that most preschoolers (89.5%) who adopt several subtypes of antisocial behaviors simultaneously exhibit stable and severe antisocial behaviors throughout childhood. In contrast, most preschoolers (60%) who favor one spe

The Associations of Polygenic Scores for Risky Behaviors and Parenting Behaviors with Adolescent Externalizing Problems.

The current study focused on longitudinal effects of genetics and parental behaviors and their interplay on externalizing behaviors in a panel study following individuals from adolescence to young adulthood. The nationally representative sample of Add Health participants of European ancestry included N = 4142 individuals, measured on three occasions. Parenting was operationalized as experiences with child maltreatment and maternal closeness. Externalizing problems were operationalized as alcohol use, cannabis use, and antisocial behaviors. Genetic effects were operationalized as a polygenic sc

The behavioral function of feeding problems as assessed by the questions about behavioral function (QABF).

Differences in subscale scores on the questions about behavioral function (QABF) were assessed for participants identified with pica, rumination, food stealing, food refusal, and mealtime behavior problems (e.g., aggression, self-injurious behavior). The QABF was administered to informants for 125 individuals identified with problematic feeding behaviors and mental retardation primarily in the severe to profound range. Results of the nonparametric analyses yielded significant differences across the escape, nonsocial, physical, and tangible subscales of the QABF. Behavior functions most commonl

Rating problem behaviors in outpatients with mental retardation: use of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist.

Parent and teacher ratings of behavior problems of an outpatient sample of 110 children, adolescents, and young adults with IQs ranging from severe mental retardation to borderline were obtained using a modified version of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC). Using factor analytic techniques, the five-factor structure of the parent data corresponded extremely well with the five factors originally obtained from staff ratings of mentally retarded inpatients (i.e., Irritability, Withdrawal, Hyperactivity, Stereotypies, and Inappropriate Speech). Factor content was virtually identical between th

The effects of conducting a functional analysis on problem behavior in other settings.

It has been suggested that reinforcing problem behavior during functional analyses (FAs) may be unethical (e.g., Carr, 1977), the implication being that doing so may result in an increase in problem behavior outside of FA sessions. The current study assessed whether conducting a FA resulted in increases in problem behavior outside of the FA setting for 4 participants. The rate of problem behavior was measured outside the FA setting prior to and during a FA. Idiosyncratic results suggest that problem behavior outside of the FA setting may increase, decrease, or be unaffected by conducting a FA.

Competing stimuli in the treatment of multiply controlled problem behavior during hygiene routines.

The current study describes the use of noncontingent competing stimuli in the treatment of problem behavior exhibited by three individuals during staff-assisted hygiene routines. Functional analyses revealed that particular topographies of problem behaviors appeared to be maintained by their own sensory consequences, whereas other topographies appeared to be maintained by escape from demands. Competing stimulus assessments were then conducted to identify items associated with low levels of automatically-maintained problem behavior and high levels of stimulus engagement. Stimuli associated with

Problem Sexual Behavior and Engagement in Therapeutic Intervention among Children Aged 4-12.

Early intervention in problem sexual behavior (PSB) is critical; however, little is known about the engagement of children and families in therapeutic intervention for PSB. This research explored the characteristics, presenting issues, and engagement of 242 children aged 4-12 years attending a therapeutic service for PSB. Most frequently, PSB occurred within sibling relationships. Girls were more likely to engage in PSB alone (self-directed or non-targeted behaviors), while boys were more likely to involve other young people (interpersonal PSB). One-third (35%) of clients engaged in completion

Maternal hypothyroxinaemia in early pregnancy and problem behavior in 5-year-old offspring.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence, though not consistent, that offspring born to mothers with subtle decreases in thyroid function early in their pregnancies may be at risk of cognitive impairments and attention problems. However, other types of problem behavior have not been addressed thus far. We tested whether maternal thyroid function in early pregnancy is associated with several types of problem behavior in offspring at age 5-6 years. METHODS: This was a longitudinal study that included the data of 2000 mother-child pairs from the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study. At a m

[Factorial structure of the French version of the Nursing Home Behavior Problem Scale].

Several measuring devices are available to assess specific behavioural problems of dementia patients residing in nursing homes but only a few have been translated and validated in French. This study's main objective was to determine the factorial structure of the French version of the Nursing Home Behavior Problem Scale (NHBPS) with people suffering from dementia. A secondary objective was to document the variables associated with the global score of the NHBPS and the underlying dimensions of the instrument. Participants (n = 155) were diagnosed with dementia and resided in three nursing homes

Problem gambling of Chinese college students: application of the theory of planned behavior.

The present study, using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), investigated psychological correlates of intention to gamble and problem gambling among Chinese college students. Nine hundred and thirty two Chinese college students (aged from 18 to 25 years) in Hong Kong and Macao were surveyed. The findings generally support the efficacy of the TPB in explaining gambling intention and problems among Chinese college students. Specifically, the results of the path analysis indicate gambling intention and perceived control over gambling as the most proximal predictors of problem gambling, whereas

Associations between sleep and inattentive/hyperactive problem behavior among foster and community children.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disruption has been linked to numerous neural regulatory problems and problems with social emotional and behavioral functioning, and researchers have shown that sleep disruption is prominent in children with symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These issues are germane to foster children, who have numerous disparities in areas of self-regulation and psychopathology but for whom there has been very little examination of sleep quality or the associations between poor sleep quality and physiological/behavioral dysregulation. METHOD: Actigraphy measures were used

Adolescents' emotion regulation in daily life: links to depressive symptoms and problem behavior.

This study examined links between emotion regulation and adjustment in a sample of 152 adolescents in Grades 7 (M age = 12) and 10 (M age = 15). Emotion regulation was assessed using the experience sampling method, in which adolescents provided multiple reports about the intensity, lability, and strategies used to regulate negative emotions across 1 week. Adolescents also completed self-report measures of adjustment. Adolescents who reported more intense and labile emotions and less effective regulation of these emotions also reported more depressive symptoms and problem behavior. Responding t

A transactional model of oppositional behavior: underpinnings of the Collaborative Problem Solving approach.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) refers to a recurrent pattern of developmentally inappropriate levels of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures. ODD is one of the most common (and debilitating) comorbid disorders within Tourette's disorder (TD). Diverse psychosocial treatment approaches have been applied to children's ODD-related behaviors. In this paper, the authors articulate a transactional developmental conceptualization of oppositional behavior and describe a cognitive-behavioral model of intervention-called collaborative problem solving (CPS

Cross-setting consistency in early adolescent psychopathology: deviant friendships and problem behavior sequelae.

This study examines adult reports of externalizing and internalizing psychopathology at home and school in a sample of 224 high-risk adolescent boys and girls (average age 12 years). Four groups of young adolescents were defined, based on the consistency of the teacher and parent Child Behavior Checklist reports: normal, internalizing, externalizing only, and comorbid. Group comparisons revealed the comorbid and externalizing groups were more engaged in a deviant peer group and were observed in higher levels of deviancy training with their friends, compared to other young adolescent groups. [Behavior problems in dogs. An inventory of the problems based on a survey conducted among Dutch veterinarians].

On the basis if an inquiry among Dutch veterinary practitioners, an attempt has been made to obtain an impression of the occurrence, the symptoms and the therapeutic measures used in problem behaviour in dogs. In addition, answers have been obtained to some supplementary questions. The response to the inquiry was limited. Aggression appeared to be the most serious and most frequent behaviour problem. Following this nervousness, unruliness, house-soiling, mounting and destructiveness were found to be serious behaviour problems with a high frequency. Therapeutic measures in unruliness and house-

Early Childhood Trajectories of Conduct Problems and Hyperactivity/Attention Problems: Predicting Adolescent and Adult Antisocial Behavior and Internalizing Problems.

Although conduct problems (CP) and hyperactivity/attention problems (HAP) are thought to covary with regularity, few studies have traced the probability of co-occurring CP and HAP longitudinally, particularly beginning in the toddler period. Further, there is little research examining how early co-occurring trajectories of CP and HAP predict functioning across several domains through late adolescence and early adulthood. Using a cohort of 284 low-income boys, we examined whether separate developmental trajectories of overt CP and HAP symptomatology from ages 2 to 10 relate to violent behavior,

Family correlates of behavioral problems among adolescents in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 20% of adolescents exhibit behavioral problems. Behavioral problems are associated with individual and environmental factors. However, little is known about the contribution of the nuclear family to the development of behavioral problems in adolescents from sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to explore family-based correlates influencing behavioral problems among adolescents in Rwanda. METHODS: With an institutional-based cross-sectional study design, a convenience sample of 158 participants {107 males and 51 females; Mean age (M) = 16.96, Standard Deviation (SD) = 1.8

Prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents is a global concern. Previous studies conducted in Bangladesh have highlighted the importance to effectively prevent and address emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents to improve their psychological well-being. Despite these efforts, there remains limited research specifically addressing emotional and behavioral problems, conduct disorders, hyperactivity/attention disorders, and peer relationship problems among adolescents in Bangladesh in terms of age, gender, grade, and location. To address this knowledge gap, the p

Behavioral and emotional problems of prisoners' children in the family environment.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to investigate the links between parental incarceration and the level of behavioral and emotional problems in children of incarcerated fathers, based on the information provided by parents. METHODS: The subjects were a group of prisoners' children and two control groups. The criterion group consisted of prisoners' children (N = 72) brought up in families with an increased level of dysfunction and problem behaviors. The first control group (I) was composed of children (N = 76) brought up in complete families; the level of problem behavior in these f
