Recommendations for physical activity in the elderly population: A scoping review of guidelines.

Physical inactivity and sedentary time are associated with all-cause mortality, chronic non-communicable diseases and falls in the elderly. Objective of this review is to assess and summarize recommendations from clinical guidelines for physical activity (PA) of older adults in general and related to falls. A scoping review of the existing clinical guidelines was conducted. The included studies should have been developed under the auspices of a health organization and their methodology should be described in detail. Nine clinical guidelines providing specific recommendations for the elderly we

The Current Status of Women in Surgery: How to Affect the Future.

IMPORTANCE: Despite women composing half of current medical school classes, surgical specialties still struggle to attract and retain women. Even after successful recruitment into training, women surgeons continue to face gender bias and various obstacles to career advancement, including lower rates of surgical residency completion, board certification, and professional advancement. Gender inequality in medicine has drawn attention; particular consideration regarding the status of women in surgery is warranted. We review research delineating disparities and investigating the causes underlying

Anesthesia Assistants (Nurses and Non-nurses) in Japan: A Narrative Review.

There is a marked shortage of anesthesiologists in Japan due to the aging population, with an increasing demand for anesthesia services. To shift the burden of intraoperative tasks from anesthesiologists, an increasing number of medical personnel, both nurses and non-nurses, have taken on responsibilities in anesthesia care. We conducted this narrative review to summarize the roles of professions involved in anesthesia assistance in Japan and to consider the standardization of surgical anesthesia delivery and personnel training, referencing global trends. A literature search was conducted usin

FIGO (international Federation of Gynecology and obstetrics) initiative on fetal growth: best practice advice for screening, diagnosis, and management of fetal growth restriction.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is defined as the failure of the fetus to meet its growth potential due to a pathological factor, most commonly placental dysfunction. Worldwide, FGR is a leading cause of stillbirth, neonatal mortality, and short- and long-term morbidity. Ongoing advances in clinical care, especially in definitions, diagnosis, and management of FGR, require efforts to effectively translate these changes to the wide range of obstetric care providers. This article highlights agreements based on current research in the diagnosis and management of FGR, and the areas that need more r

Medication safety programs in primary care: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Medication safety plays an essential role in all healthcare organizations; improving this area is paramount to quality and safety of any wider healthcare program. While several medication safety programs in the hospital setting have been described and the associated impact on patient safety evaluated, no systematic reviews have described the impact of medication safety programs in the primary care setting. A preliminary search of the literature demonstrated that no systematic reviews, meta-analysis or scoping reviews have reported on medication safety programs in primary care; inst

A Scoping Review of Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD) in Pregnancy in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC).

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including pre-existing cardiac conditions and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, are among the leading causes of maternal mortality globally and account for a substantial proportion of preventable deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In these settings, women are disproportionately affected by conditions such as rheumatic heart disease, peripartum cardiomyopathy, and severe anemia-related heart failure, yet clinical guidance tailored to LMICs contexts remains limited. This paper presents the findings of a scoping review on CVD in pregnancy guideli

Systems versus performance problems: a peer review organization's perspective.

An analysis of Ohio's Medicare data base by the state's Peer Review Organization, using the most common diagnosis-related group in the Medicare population (heart failure and shock), from January 1, 1989 to January 1, 1991, identified 72 cases with confirmed quality-of-care problems. The analysis was performed to determine whether the majority of quality-of-care problems are related to systems or performance deficiencies. Study results indicated that health care workers are being inappropriately blamed for problems that are inherent in the health care system--74% of problems were related to ine

Healthcare systems worldwide face mounting pressure to deliver high-quality care while enhancing efficiency and sustainability. Nurse-led interventions have emerged as promising strategies to optimize care delivery, particularly within value-based health systems. However, a comprehensive understanding of their clinical impact and economic value remains limited. This systematic review conducted following PRISMA guidelines, searched nine international databases to identify and synthesize formally evaluated nurse-led interventions, programs, and strategies. Twenty-eight studies were included, enc

Practical approaches to managing cancer patients with weight loss.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Poor appetite and weight loss are a source of family conflict, psychological distress, and associated with poor tolerance to chemotherapy, impaired quality of life, and decreased survival. Despite clinicians' concern about the effect of cachexia on their patients, few oncological professional organizations provide guidelines for the treatment of cancer-related weight loss. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent publications indicate there is an unmet need for addressing cachexia in patients with cancer. Studies also reveal that patients are often consuming inadequate calories and protein.
