The International journal of adult orthodontics and orthognathic surgery1998eng
The purpose of this study was to investigate morphologic changes in oropharyngeal structures in mandibular prognathic patients after orthognathic surgery. The study consisted of 25 patients (12 males and 13 females) with mandibular prognathism who underwent surgical and orthodontic treatment. A set of 4 standardized lateral cephalograms were obtained from each subject preoperatively and at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively. Morphologic changes in upper airway structures were evaluated longitudinally by gender. Parameters of the anteroposterior width of the pharynx significantly de

INTRODUCTION: Orthognathic surgery simply means alignment of the jaws. The aim of orthognathic surgery is to normalize the relationship of the jaws between themselves and the rest of the craniofacial complex. Mandibular prognathism is a common clinical problem all over the world. Currently, sagittal ramus osteotomy is the primary choice for correcting most cases of mandibular retrognathism and prognathism. The surgical option for extreme cases of mandibular prognathism is extraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (EVRO) or intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) or inverted L osteotomy.

Objectives. To investigate the correlation between frontal gaps and skeletal stability after intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) for correction of mandibular prognathism. Materials and Methods. Thirty-three patients with frontal gaps after IVRO-based mandibular prognathism correction were included. Three lateral and frontal cephalometric radiographs were obtained: preoperatively (T1), immediately postoperatively (T2), and 2 years postoperatively (T3). Two linear measurements (menton [Me] and frontal gap) were compared from T1 to T3 (T21: immediate surgical changes; T32: postoperative sta

A 9-week-old male umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) presented with mandibular prognathism. The rostral rhinothecal tomial length appeared subjectively shorter than the rostral gnathothecal length, which was subjectively rostrally elongated. After an initial orthosis failed, a second orthosis was designed that employed the use of an orthopedic wire anchor in the rostral end of the rhinotheca, leaving the premaxillary bone undisturbed. Prior to placement of the anchor, skull radiographs were taken to measure the distance from the rostral tip of the rhinotheca to the rostral end of the premaxillar

Since its introduction, the diagnostic classification for malocclusions with facial prognathism has been well recognized and practically applied in orthodontic specialty. According to this classification, the malocclusions with a prognathic facial profile can be categorized into 4 classes: dento-alveolar originated, skeletally originated, mandibular positioning and combined skeletal and mandibular positioning, i.e, combined subtype I and subtype II. Among the new developments of this innovative malocclusion classification, the morphological assessment of mandibular body highlights a new impetu

Modern porpoises (Odontoceti: Phocoenidae) are some of the smallest cetaceans and usually feed near the seafloor on small fish and cephalopods [1-3]. Within both extinct and extant phocoenids, no evidence for specialized mandibular morphology has been documented [4-7]. Here we describe a new species of extinct porpoise, Semirostrum ceruttii, from the marine Pliocene San Diego (4.2-1.6 mega-annum, Ma) and Purisima (5-2.5 Ma) formations of California. The mandibles comprise a long, fused, and nearly edentulous prognathous symphysis, extending farther beyond the rostrum than in any known mammal.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between masticatory muscle volume and mandibular skeletal measurements in patients with and without facial asymmetry. This was done in order to determine whether asymmetric mandibular prognathism is related to masticatory muscle asymmetry.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study was conducted with 40 adult patients with mandibular prognathism composed of 2 groups, the asymmetry group (n = 20) and the nonasymmetry group (n = 20). Using 3-dimensional reformatted computed tomography (CT) images, the volume of masticatory muscle (

Following the extraoral vertical subcondylar osteotomy in the correction of the highly asymmetric and prognathic mandible, only insignificant radiographic changes were observed in the temporomandibular joint 12 months postoperatively. Slight morphologic alterations of the condylar seating were demonstrated at occlusion, but there was no significant difference in condylar position between the two sides of the surgically corrected asymmetric mandible. The condylar axis did not deviate from the preoperative situation, and condylar axis did not deviate from the preoperative situation, and condylar

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bilateral difference in condyle position in patients with deviated mandibular prognathism. Patients with asymmetrical (n=28) and symmetrical mandibular prognathism (n=23) were compared using the three-dimensional (3D) reformatted image from cone beam computed tomography. Significant positional differences in the condyle and subcondyle region (sigmoid notch) were found between the deviated and contralateral sides in the group with asymmetrical mandibular prognathism, but not in the control group. The lateral condyle was more laterally and inferiorly

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the factors that cause facial asymmetry by comparing the characteristics of the mandibular morphology in patients with mandibular prognathism with or without facial asymmetry using three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT).
METHODS: We studied 28 mandibular prognathism patients whose menton deviated by ≥ 4 mm from the midline (FA group, n = 14) and those with a < 4-mm deviation (NA group, n = 14). DICOM data from multislice CT images were reconstructed and analysed using 3D image analysing software. Mandibular structures were assessed
