Challenges, Skepticism, and Recommendations from Police about Working in Collaboration with Supervised Consumption Services.

The operation of supervised consumption services (SCS), programs that offer supervised locations for the consumption of drugs such as heroin, other opioids, cocaine, other stimulants, and other drugs, is contingent on cooperative relationships with police. In this manuscript, we focus on an under studied topic: how active duty police officers understand their role with respect to SCS, and their recommendations for improving relationships with these programs. Methods: During 2018, we audio-recorded and transcribed focus group discussions conducted in four police divisions with 26 police constab

Can the use of a topical antifungal nail lacquer reduce risk for diabetic foot ulceration? Results from a randomised controlled pilot study.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the routine use of a topical antifungal nail lacquer (AFL) could reduce the risk for ulceration by theoretically increasing the frequency of patient self-inspection. In this randomised controlled trial, 70 persons at high risk for diabetic foot ulceration were enrolled into a preventative care program involving daily self-inspection with the possible use of an AFL (ciclopirox 8%) versus self-inspection instructions alone (NAFL). Patients were followed for 12 months or until ulceration. Using an intent to treat analysis, there was no significan

Independent learning modules enhance student performance and understanding of anatomy.

Didactic lessons are only one part of the multimodal teaching strategies used in gross anatomy courses today. Increased emphasis is placed on providing more opportunities for students to develop lifelong learning and critical thinking skills during medical training. In a pilot program designed to promote more engaged and independent learning in anatomy, self-study modules were introduced to supplement human gross anatomy instruction at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. Modules use three-dimensional constructs to help students understand complex anatomical regions. Reso

The Prevalence of Disability Health Training and Residents With Disabilities in Emergency Medicine Residency Programs.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with disabilities experience significant health care disparities due to a multitude of barriers to effective care, which include a lack of adequate physician training on this topic and negative attitudes of physicians. This results in disparities through inadequate physical examination and diagnostic testing, withholding or inferior treatment, and neglecting preventative care. While much has been published about disability education in undergraduate medical education, little is known about the current state of disability education in emergency medicine (EM) residency pr

Computer-aided therapy in aphasia therapy: evaluation of assignment criteria.

Recent studies in neurorehabilitation research show that success in aphasia therapy is linked to a high treatment frequency. Computer-aided therapy offers a solution to the dilemma of increasing therapy frequency while maintaining or reducing the load on therapists' resources. Until now it has, however, been unclear which patients can reasonably be treated with computer-aided therapy. The study investigates therapists' indication choices of a new computer-aided training programme designed to supplement conventional speech therapy for aphasics (EvoCare therapy, Dr Hein GmbH, Nuremberg, Germany)

RISE: Resident Initiative in Surgical Ethics. Creating A Comprehensive Curriculum for General Surgery Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Modern surgical practice presents increasingly complex ethical challenges, shaped by technological advancements and a shift toward shared decision-making and patient autonomy. While technical proficiency is essential, a strong foundation in ethics is critical for surgical residents. However, ethics education in many residency programs remains unstandardized and insufficient. To address this gap, we developed the RISE (Resident Immersion in Surgical Ethics) curriculum using Kern's 6-Step Approach to curriculum development. METHODS: A targeted local needs assessment was conducted

Do dental students need sonography training? A prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Sonography is a key diagnostic tool in oral and maxillofacial surgery and complements other imaging methods such as computer tomography or X-rays. While X-ray courses are integral to dentistry students' training, ultrasound diagnostics have not been integrated into undergraduate and postgraduate training. This study investigates whether there is a demand for undergraduate sonography training among dental students. METHODS: An online questionnaire was developed by a team of experts (dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngology, radiology, and didactics) based on the "Che

Harvesting experiential expertise to support safe driving for people with diabetes mellitus: a qualitative study evaluated by peers in a survey.

BACKGROUND: Hypoglycemia is a frequent phenomenon in people being treated for diabetes mellitus, which can acutely disrupt driving performance. For the benefit of personal and public traffic safety, we decided to identify successful diabetes-related (SDR) behaviors to support safe driving for people with diabetes, from the perspective of experiential experts with diabetes mellitus. Experiential experts are people who can manage their own illness and conditions by developing expertise relevant to maintaining health and countering illness, and who are able to use this expertise to the benefit of

Controlled drug delivery in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes not only requires correction of an insulin deficiency but it also demands adequate insulin delivery. A short historical review is given over the first 60 years of insulin treatment, where emphasis was mainly on the correction of insulin deficiency. Despite concerted efforts, metabolic results were often poor, and there was a high incidence of late complications, which will be described briefly. A major aim of new treatment approaches, which emphasizes better routes of insulin delivery, is the prevention or reversal of these late complications. Closed-loop systems are infusion systems
