Psychometric properties of the Dutch Inventories of Prolonged Grief for Children and Adolescents.

UNLABELLED: A significant minority of bereaved adults develops prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a syndrome encompassing debilitating symptoms of grief distinct from depression and anxiety. Few studies have examined the phenomenology and correlates of PGD among children and adolescents. In part, this is due to the lack of a psychometrically sound questionnaire to assess PGD symptoms in these groups. Based on an adult measure of PGD, we developed two questionnaires of PGD symptoms for children and adolescents named the Inventory of Prolonged Grief for Children (IPG-C) and Inventory of Prolonged G

Prolonged grief during and beyond the pandemic: factors associated with levels of grief in a four time-point longitudinal survey of people bereaved in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been a devastating and enduring mass-bereavement event, with uniquely difficult sets of circumstances experienced by people bereaved at this time. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of these experiences, including the prevalence of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and other conditions in pandemic-bereaved populations. METHODS: A longitudinal survey of people bereaved in the UK between 16 March 2020 and 2 January 2021, with data collected at baseline (n = 711), c. 8 (n = 383), 13 (n = 295), and 25 (n = 185) months post-bereavement. Rumination, Hopelessness, Behavioural Avoidance and Psychopathology Symptoms After Bereavement: Serial Mediation Analyses.

Bereavement can precipitate severe mental health problems, including major depressive disorder and prolonged grief disorder. Rumination is a risk factor of post-loss mental health problems, and as such, a better understanding of its working mechanisms may inform clinical practice. Rumination is theorized to take up time and increase feelings of hopelessness, leading to inactivity and social withdrawal, which in turn fuels post-loss psychopathology. Yet, these ideas have not been tested comprehensively. Therefore, we aimed to fill this gap in knowledge. A sample of bereaved adults (87% women) c

Co-occurrence of approach and avoidance in prolonged grief: a latent class analysis.

Background: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has been included in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 Text Revision (DSM-5-TR). Loss-related avoidance behavior perpetuates grief and effective interventions for prolonged grief symptoms target such avoidance behavior. Yet, behaviors characterized by approach of loss-related cues (i.e. rumination, yearning, proximity seeking) are also implicated in prolonged grief reactions. Objective: To solve this paradox, we will test the Approach Avoidance Processing Hypothesis, wh

Family members' long-term grief management: A prospective study of factors during ongoing palliative care and bereavement.

OBJECTIVES: Up to 10% of bereaved individuals can develop prolonged grief disorder. Several risk factors for prolonged grief symptom severity in family members have been identified, but there is a lack of knowledge regarding the multivariable effects between family members coping with loss and patient-related factors for prolonged grief symptom severity during bereavement. The aim was to identify risk factors for prolonged grief symptom severity in family members 1 year after patient death in relation to (1) the family member and the patient during ongoing palliative care and (2) the family me

Pathologic grief and its relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

The authors defined explicit criteria for the diagnosis of pathologic grief, and used the criteria to examine the relationship between pathologic grief and two disorders: major depression and anxiety disorders (panic and generalized anxiety), in a sample of 25 bereaved persons. Sixty-four percent of the sample met the criteria for pathologic grief. Pathologic grief was only significantly associated with major depressive disorder. It was also associated with high scores on dimensional measures of anxiety and depression. The most frequent complication of bereavement appeared to be an anxious sub

Prolonged grief among Turkish migrants in Germany: prevalence and the role of migratory grief.

ABSTRACTBackground: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is associated with negative health outcomes and appears to be more prevalent among migrants. For migrants, bereavement also includes losses tied to their country of origin, leading to migratory grief. However, the association between migratory grief and prolonged grief has remained unexplored. Objective: This study investigates PGD prevalence, and its grief- and migration-related correlates among first- and second-generation Turkish migrants in Germany.Method: Adults (≥18) with Turkish migration background (self or parental) were included (N =

Identifying risk factors of acute and prolonged grief using large-scale survey data.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement can precipitate severe acute grief. If such grief reactions persist beyond six months post-loss, they may develop into prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Charting risk factors of severe grief before and beyond six months post-loss is critical to help identify people who may benefit from preventative and curative interventions for PGD. METHODS: Bereaved adults <6 months post-loss (N = 2450) and ≥ 6 months post-loss (N = 3609) completed an online survey. We assessed demographic variables (age, gender), loss characteristics (e.g., cause of death, relationship to the deceased

Exploring reactivity effects of self-monitoring prolonged grief reactions in daily life: A randomized waitlist-controlled trial using experience sampling methodology.

BACKGROUND: While people's symptomatology levels may change through self-monitoring of symptoms in daily life using experience sampling methodology (ESM), no controlled studies have examined such reactivity effects in the grief field. OBJECTIVE: We investigated reactivity effects of self-monitoring prolonged grief reactions to determine whether self-monitoring leads to clinically significant changes in early prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression symptoms at both group and individual levels. METHODS: 184 adults, bereaved 3 to 6 months earlier, w

Grief and bereavement care in pediatric palliative care: Gaps, global disparities, and a proposed integrated framework.

OBJECTIVES: Grief and bereavement care (GBC) remains an underrecognized component of pediatric palliative care (PPC), contributing to the emotional and psychological burden experienced by patients, families, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This perspective review examines gaps in GBC, defines key types of grief in pediatric settings, and proposes a framework to improve patient- and family-centered grief support. METHODS: We conducted a narrative perspective review using PubMed and Google Scholar to identify literature on GBC in PPC. Search terms included combinations of "grief," "bereave

To lose a friend: the relationship between professional help and grief among close bereaved friends after the terror attack, 22 July 2011.

Background: Close friends are often an overlooked group of bereaved people. This study is based on a sub-project on young adults who experienced the loss of a close friend in the terrorist attack on Utøya, Norway, on 22 July 2011.Objective: The aim of this longitudinal study was to explore the relationship between complicated grief reactions, the need for help, and help received after losing a close friend to a traumatic death.Method: In total, data from 89 people (with a mean age of 21 years, 76.4% female) were collected at one or more of the four time-points: 18, 28, 40, and 102 months after

Longitudinal Trajectories of Grief Before and After Bereavement and Their Association With Mental Health Outcomes: A Pilot Prospective Cohort Study From the China Grief Cohort 2025.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) impairs psychophysiological well-being and social functioning. Although post-death grief trajectories have been well-documented, pre-death grief trajectories remain understudied, particularly within the same cohort. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory pilot study aimed to identify candidate longitudinal trajectories of grief before and after bereavement and to examine their associations with subsequent mental health outcomes, with the goal of generating hypotheses to inform a larger confirmatory cohort. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted a

Coping strategies as a causal mediator of the effect of loss-related memory characteristics and negative loss-related appraisals on symptoms of PGD, PTSD and depression.

BACKGROUND: Psychological models of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) make predictions about the role of unhelpful coping strategies in maintaining difficulties by blocking self-correction of negative appraisals and memory integration following stressful life events like bereavement. However, few studies have tested these predictions directly. METHOD: We used counterfactually based causal mediation to assess whether unhelpful coping strategies mediated the relationship between (1) loss-related memory characteristics and/or (2) negative grief-related appra

Trajectories of grief-related psychopathology: A decade after the MH17 plane disaster.

Violent losses increase the risk for prolonged grief disorder (PGD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Little is known about the course of grief-related psychopathology in the long term. Hence, we examined their latent trajectories, overlap, and predictors to enhance our understanding of differential long-term responses to violent loss. MH17-bereaved people (N = 299) completed annual self-report measures from one to nine years post-loss. Prolonged grief (PG), posttraumatic stress (PTS), and major depression (MD) symptom trajectories were identified usin

Grief reactions in relation to professional and social support among family members of persons who died from sudden cardiac arrest: A longitudinal survey study.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a close person from sudden cardiac arrest (CA) leaves family members at risk of developing grief reactions such as symptoms of prolonged grief, anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress. The aim was to describe longitudinal variations in grief reactions and its association with professional and social support among bereaved family members after a close person's death from sudden CA. METHODS: This longitudinal multimethod survey included 69 bereaved family members who completed a questionnaire 6 and 12-months after the CA, including the Prolonged Grief Disorder-13,

End-of-life care experiences and long-term outcomes of bereaved neuro-oncology caregivers: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The last three months of life (end-of-life phase) are profoundly challenging for patients with brain tumours and their family caregivers. Post-bereavement outcomes are largely unknown. AIM: To better understand long-term outcomes of a brain tumour diagnosis on families, we aimed to describe caregiver experiences during the end-of-life phase and beyond. DESIGN: In this sequential mixed-methods study designed together with bereaved caregivers, we used an online survey. This comprised end-of-life experiences, and post-bereavement outcomes (family functioning: Family APGAR; resilienc

The brain oxytocin and corticotropin-releasing factor systems in grieving mothers: What we know and what we need to learn.

The bond between a mother and her child is the strongest bond in nature. Consequently, the loss of a child is one of the most stressful and traumatic life events that causes Prolonged Grief Disorder in up to 94 % of bereaved parents. While both parents are affected, mothers are of higher risk to develop mental health complications; yet, very little research has been done to understand the impact of the loss of a child, stillbirth and pregnancy loss on key neurobiological systems. The emotional impact of losing a child, e.g., Prolonged Grief Disorder, is likely accompanied by dysregulations in

Grief modular group therapy: theoretical bases and pilot study of a new bereavement intervention programme in China.

Background: Bereavement is a major life stressor, with millions of Chinese individuals experiencing grief each year. Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are prevalent among bereaved people in China, yet culturally appropriate interventions are scarce. Existing Western-based protocols often showed limited cross-cultural applicability when implemented in the Chinese context, highlighting the need for evidence-based, culturally adapted interventions. Objective: This study aimed to introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of a newly developed structured Grief Mod

Group Vs Individual Grief-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Older Adults: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Grief-focused cognitive behavioral therapies (GF-CBTs) are found effective in treating prolonged grief disorder (PGD), but the relative efficacy of different delivery formats is unknown. While evidence for individual GF-CBT (GF-CBT individual) is well established, evidence for group GF-CBT (GF-CBT group) is scarce. However, the group format holds possible advantages in a bereavement context. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether GF-CBT group is noninferior to GF-CBT individual in reducing PGD symptoms in older adults. Validation of the Italian version Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG): a study comparing CG patients versus bipolar disorder, PTSD and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: A minority (9%-20%) of bereaved individuals experience symptoms of persistent intense grief associated with significant distress and impairment. This recently identified distinct post-loss syndrome has been variously named complicated grief, prolonged grief disorder, traumatic grief and persistent complex bereavement disorder. The Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) is a self-report instrument used to reliably identify this syndrome. We undertook a study to: 1) validate the Italian version of the ICG; 2) examine its performance in a clinical of bereaved individuals with complicate
