BackgroundThe distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA) is a measurement used in surgical decision making of hallux valgus correction. However, it is difficult to measure on plain radiographs, is subject to projection bias, and its role in pathology is unclear. With the advent of weight-bearing CT (WBCT), our understanding of hallux valgus as a multiplanar deformity has evolved. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between the DMAA and pronation of the first metatarsal head in patients with hallux valgus.MethodsThis was a single-centre, retrospective analysis

BACKGROUND: Ankle fractures are among the most common types of fractures in the orthopaedic field, and the Lauge-Hansen classification is commonly used to categorize rotational ankle fractures. This study evaluated and compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of surgically treated supination external rotation (SER) and pronation external rotation (PER) injuries of grades III or IV.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed and enrolled 104 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for SER or PER injuries classified as Grades III or IV between January 2016 and December 2021

INTRODUCTION: Congenital proximal radioulnar synostosis (CPRUS) is a relatively rare forearm deformity that is characterized by a fixed pronated forearm of varying severity. The osseous synostosis between the proximal part of the ulna and the radius can be seen on the X-ray images in most cases. Many researchers have attempted to identify methods to measure the disease severity to guide in the treatment of CPRUS. However, to describe the overall deformity, the use of multiple indicators is essential, and some of these measurements require special software or need to be conducted on cadavers.

This case report describes a strategy for assessing the suitability of orthotic prescription for individual patients with lower limb overuse injuries. The case concerns a 32 year old male soccer player with a two-year history of Achilles tendinopathy. A functional assessment performed before, during, and after a trial period of anti-pronation taping showed that taping reduced symptoms markedly and resulted in a 10-fold increase in pain-free jogging distance. This was interpreted as an indication for favourable orthotic intervention. Subsequently, orthotic intervention was associated with a sim

Pronator teres syndrome is characterized by compression of the median nerve, leading to dysfunction of the affected limb. Median nerve entrapment causes paresthesia, changes in sensitivity, and loss of strength in the fingers, in addition to causing loss of hand dexterity. The diagnosis of pronator teres syndrome is complicated, due to its similarity with other neuropathies of the median nerve. So, it is important to emphasize the need for a physical examination together with imaging tests, especially ultrasound, for its correct diagnosis. We report the case of a 28-year-old woman who complain

Children with spastic hemiparesis can present with forearm pronation deformities that can greatly impair function. In the appropriate setting, pronator teres rerouting can provide active supination while preserving active pronation, which may improve function in these patients. Patient selection is imperative for the success of this procedure because, in the wrong setting, pronator teres rerouting can lead to fixed supination deformity that may actually worsen position and function in these patients.

Acute distal radius fractures are commonly treated by volar locking plate fixation and typically involve reflection of the pronator quadratus for adequate exposure of the fracture. Recently, attention has been centered on the role and repair of the pronator quadratus. This article presents an alternative approach to fixation of distal radius fractures with a pronator-sparing technique that offers similar short-term radiographic outcomes to the conventional volar plating approach.

BACKGROUND: The pronator quadratus (PQ) is a flat muscle located in the distal forearm, between the radius and ulna, primarily responsible for forearm pronation. Given its frequent involvement in volar surgical approaches to the distal radius and its use in reconstructive procedures, such as flap transfers, a detailed understanding of its anatomy is clinically significant. This study aims to analyze the morphometric properties of the PQ, determine its distances from key osseous landmarks, and assess gender-based anatomical differences to inform surgical planning and minimize iatrogenic complic

The branch of the anterior interosseous nerve to the pronator quadratus (PQ) is increasingly used as a donor nerve for end-to-end and reverse end-to-side nerve transfers. The anatomy of the PQ (and its nerve branch) is generally considered reliable in the absence of prior trauma. In this report, we describe a patient with an absent PQ despite intact clinical examination of other muscles supplied by the anterior interosseous nerve. The absence of the PQ precluded the use of its nerve as a donor nerve for transfer.

Pronator teres syndrome is a rare but clinically important condition which can cause pain in the forearm. It is a com-pression neuropathy due to compression of the median nerve proximal in the forearm. In this case report we de-scribe a 69-year-old male patient with pain in both forearms in more than ten years. After surgical decompression of the median nerve in both arms he experienced almost complete relief of his symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Most surgeons don't repair the pronator quadratus (PQ) muscle in palmar plate fixation of a distal radius fracture because experience has shown that PQ repair yields no functional advantage. However, repair of the PQ may offer finger flexor tendon protection.
METHODS: In 9 human cadavers, the PQ was detached with a strong rim of connective tissue consisting of a fibrous portion of the roof of the first extensor compartment (RFEC) and the palmar limb of the brachioradialis muscle (BR) insertion. The gross anatomy and the dimensions of the dissected tissue were measured. After fixat

In this paper, we describe a very rare variant in the course of the ulnar artery that we encountered in dissecting the right upper limb of a 74-year-old man. The ulnar artery arose standardly from the brachial artery in the cubital fossa. However, its ensuing course differed from the norm. The artery entered together with the ulnar vein and median nerve into the pronator canal (between the humeral and ulnar heads of the pronator teres). Further, the ulnar artery descended classically to the ulnar side of the forearm between the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor digitorum superficialis. Knowledge

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that the demands placed on the medial ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow when it is subjected to valgus torque during throwing exceed its failure strength, which suggests the necessary dynamic contribution of muscle forces. We hypothesized that the flexor-pronator mass assists the medial ulnar collateral ligament in stabilizing the elbow against valgus torque.
METHODS: Six cadaveric elbows were tested at 30 degrees and 90 degrees of flexion with no other constraints to motion. A full medial ulnar collateral ligament tear was simulated in each el

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of altering the load contributions of the pronator quadratus and supinator muscles on in vitro distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) stability during pronation and supination and before and after ulnar head excision.
METHODS: Multiple pronation trials were conducted with incremental loading of the pronator quadratus relative to the pronator teres muscle; supination trials were similarly conducted with incremental loading of the supinator relative to the biceps muscle. All trials were conducted using an upper-limb apparatus capable of simulating muscle/tendon loading

We report two cases of pronator teres syndrome (bilateral in one case) diagnosed in our Department by electromyographic studies during the last three years. The infrequency of this syndrome (1 case/201 cases of carpal tunnel syndrome), combined with the unspecified and inconsistent symptomatology (tenderness over the pronator teres, paresthesias and weakness of flexor pollicis longus, abductor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis) frequently induced diagnostic mistakes. The electromyographic study is very useful showing a delay in proximal motor latency of the median nerve, diminution of moto

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and flexor-pronator muscle (FPM) injuries are common in baseball players. However, the sites of FPM injuries and the relationship between UCL and FPM injuries in baseball players have not been fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to identify the sites of FPM injuries and to determine the relationships of location and severity of UCL injury with the presence of FPM injuries in baseball players.
METHODS: UCL and FPM injuries were diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging in 99 baseball players. The sites of FPM injuries were identified on c
