Three cases of psychological dependence upon the over-the-counter preparation of cinnamedryl, caffeine and aspirin (Midol) are reviewed. The relationship between cinnamedryl, amphetamine and other sympathomimetics is discussed. Similarities are noted in symptomatic response and chemical structure.

Among natural products with sleep-promoting activity, hops have been used since ancient times as a tranquilizer and hypnotic agent. This study investigated the sleep-promoting effects of extracts of various hop (Humulus lupulus L.) varieties in invertebrate and vertebrate models. We report two fatalities that are related to the cathinone 4-methylethcathinone (4-MEC) and review the current knowledge of 4-MEC. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of 4-MEC was performed by validated high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods. In the first case a 22-year-old male died in hospital following collapse and seizures after using 4-MEC. Toxicological analysis of postmortem femoral blood revealed the presence of 4-MEC (0.167 mg/L), ethanol (27 mg/100 mL) and paracetamol (5 mg/L). Death was attributed solely to 4-MEC toxicity. New glycosaminoglycans, fucose-containing glycosaminoglycan (FGAG) and depolymerized holothurian glycosaminoglycan (DHG), were investigated as chiral additives for the separation of drug enantiomers by capillary electrophoresis. The kinetics of methaemoglobin production by orally administered p-aminopropiophenone (PAPP) was studied by using a kinetic model previously developed to describe methaemoglobinaemia consequent on intravenous injection of PAPP. Both ISIS, a simulation package, and NONLIN, a non-linear least-squares regression analysis program, were used to analyse the data. Some modification of the model was necessary to describe oral profiles and 40-50% of the administered PAPP appeared to be being metabolized at first pass to a non-active metabolite.
