Prosopagnosia: a clinical and anatomical study of four patients.

We tested in great detail face perception and face memory in four cases of prosopagnosia. Three of them showed deficits of face perception and/or of familiar faces memory. There was one prosopagnosic patient, however, who showed no abnormality in face perception and discrimination and could recall familiar faces. This case suggests that a form of prosopagnosia may exist, which is due to the disconnection between face perception and face memory. X-ray CT, MRI and PET studies revealed that two patients did not have damage of the left hemisphere, supporting the view that prosopagnosia can arise f…

Covert face recognition in prosopagnosia: a dissociable function?

Covert face recognition was investigated in a patient with prosopagnosia without object agnosia. This patient performed well in various face processing tasks like expression analysis and feature processing and had relatively preserved semantic knowledge about persons, but was slightly impaired in the visual matching of unfamiliar faces. In face-name paired-associate relearning task, covert face recognition was demonstrated to be above-chance. However, as this task cannot be meaningfully applied to control subjects, results do not necessarily indicate that the degree of covert face recognition …

Electrodermal discrimination of familiar but not unfamiliar faces in prosopagnosia.

It has been previously shown that prosopagnosics can electrodermally "recognize" faces they cannot verbally identify and with which they fee … cessing. Implications for cognitive models of face recognition, and for understanding the nature of prosopagnosia, are discussed.

Prosopagnosia and agnosia for noncanonical views. An autopsied case.

It has been postulated that for prosopagnosia to occur, bilateral lesions of the central visual system are usually necessary. All but 1 of the 10 previously documented cases that came to autopsy showed this pattern. However, the long survival period after the onset of prosopagnosia in most of these patients limits the value of the autopsy findings for clinicopathological correlation. A patient is presented who died 10 days after she had developed prosopagnosia, topographagnosia and an agnosia for real objects seen from noncanonical views. These clinical symptoms corresponded directly to the au…

Is prosopagnosia more frequent in males than in females?

A case review of prosopagnosia was carried out and male-female incidence of the disorder compared to relative male-female incidence of cerebro-vascular disease in general. Prosopagnosia was found to occur significantly more frequently in males than in females. Possible implications of this finding vis-à-vis male-female differences in cerebral organization are discussed and topics for further investigation are suggested.

Face processing predicts reading ability: Evidence from prosopagnosia.

There is considerable interest in whether face and word processing are reliant upon shared or dissociable processes. Developmental prosopagnosia is associated with lifelong face processing deficits, with these cases providing strong support for a dissociation between face and word recognition in three recent papers (Burns et al., 2017; Rubino et al., 2016; Starrfelt et al., 2018). However, the sample sizes in each of these studies may have been too small to detect significant effects. We therefore combined their data to increase power and reassessed their results. While only a non-significant …

Probing short-term face memory in developmental prosopagnosia.

It has recently been proposed that the face recognition deficits seen in neurodevelopmental disorders may reflect impaired short-term face memory (STFM). For example, introducing a brief delay between the presentation of target and test faces seems to disproportionately impair matching or recognition performance in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The present study sought to determine whether deficits of STFM contribute to impaired face recognition seen in Developmental Prosopagnosia. To determine whether developmental prosopagnosics exhibit impaired STFM, the present study used a s…

Representations in learning new faces: evidence from prosopagnosia.

We report the performance of a prosopagnosic patient on face learning tasks under different encoding instructions (i.e., levels of processin … instructions may enhance memory for concrete or pictorial representations of faces in patients with prosopagnosia, but that these patients cannot compensate for the inability to construct abstract structural codes that normally allow faces to be recognized from different orientations. We postulate further that R.J.'s poor performance on face learning tasks may …

Brain potentials reveal covert facial recognition in prosopagnosia.

Brain potentials were recorded in a prosopagnosic patient, in response to familiar and unfamiliar faces he was asked to recognize. The amplitude of the P300 component was found to be an inverse function of probability for each category of faces despite the patient's inability to consciously recognize the familiarity of these faces. In addition, P300 latency varied from 700 to 800 msec according to the familiarity of the faces, and P300 scalp location was different as a function of faces probability and overt recognition. The results imply that covert facial recognition may be evidenced in usin

[Prosopagnosia without hemianopsia after unilateral right occipitotemporal lesion].

Three atypical features were noted in a patient with prosopagnosia due to a right occipital hematoma: prosopagnosia was unassociated with achromatopsia, spatial disorientation or left visual field alexia; the right visual field was normal and the left field only slightly impaired; the lesion was apparently unilateral.

Foundations of prosopagnosia: The three classic Austro-German reports.

The term prosopagnosia was coined 78 years ago, in 1947. At that time few reports of a specific disorder of face recognition existed, the three most detailed being those of Wilbrand (1892), Hoff and Pötzl (1937), and Bodamer (1947). These laid the basis for much of our current thought about the manifestations of prosopagnosia, its associations, its structural basis, and theories about its functional mechanisms. However, since they were written in German and few current researchers are fluent in that language, these early works are relatively neglected today. In this review we discuss their hig…

Prosopagnosia: face blindness and its association with neurological disorders.

Loss of facial recognition or prosopagnosia has been well-recognized for over a century. It has been categorized as developmental or acquired depending on whether the onset is in early childhood or beyond, and acquired cases can have degenerative or non-degenerative aetiologies. Prosopagnosia has been linked to involvement of the fusiform gyri, mainly in the right hemisphere. The literature on prosopagnosia comprises case reports and small case series. We aim to assess demographic, clinical and imaging characteristics and neurological and neuropathological disorders associated with a diagnosis…

Getting lost: Topographic skills in acquired and developmental prosopagnosia.

Previous studies report that acquired prosopagnosia is frequently associated with topographic disorientation. Whether this is associated with a specific anatomic subtype of prosopagnosia, how frequently it is seen with the developmental variant, and what specific topographic function is impaired to account for this problem are not known. We studied ten subjects with acquired prosopagnosia from either occipitotemporal or anterior temporal (AT) lesions and seven with developmental prosopagnosia. Subjects were given a battery of topographic tests, including house and scene recognition, the road m…

Prosopagnosia: a rare presenting manifestation of frontotemporal lobar degeneration.

Frontotemporal dementia is an important neurodegenerative disorder accounting for a significant proportion of dementia cases with onset before 60 years of age. Apart from the well recognized behavioral changes the disease has many other distinctive features like predominant language involvement alone or associated features of motor neuron disease or parkinsonism etc. which at times may be the presenting manifestation itself. In the following article we describe a rare presenting manifestation; prosopagnosia, in the setting of frontotemporal degeneration.

Gaze dynamics toward familiar and unfamiliar faces in prosopagnosia.

Recognizing familiar faces is typically fast and automatic in neurotypical individuals but is markedly impaired in congenital prosopagnosia (CP) – a lifelong face recognition deficit without apparent brain injury. While previous research has focused on deficits in face perception or gaze to facial features in CP, it remains unclear whether individuals with CP can use facial familiarity, either explicitly or implicitly, to guide gaze dynamics in goal-directed tasks. Here, we investigated whether familiarity modulates gaze behavior in individuals with CP using two tasks previously validated in n…

Damasio's error - Prosopagnosia with intact within-category object recognition.

The sudden inability to recognize individual faces following brain damage was first reported in a scientific journal 150 years ago and termed 'prosopagnosia' 70 years ago. While the term originally identified a face-selective neurological condition, it is now obscured by a sequence of imprecisions. First, prosopagnosia is routinely used to define symptoms of individual face recognition (IFR) difficulties in the context of visual object agnosia or other neurological conditions, or even in the normal population. Second, this over-expansive definition has lent support to a long-standing within-ca…
