Sclerosing mesenteritis presenting as protein-losing enteropathy: a fatal case.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, benign disorder characterized by non-specific and chronic inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue. The disease usually presents with gastrointestinal symptoms and abdominal masses. The long-term prognosis is favorable, but it often becomes severe. In the present report we describe a 77-year-old man who presented with diarrhea, massive ascites and an abdominal mass. The rapid deterioration of the general condition of the patient limited invasive examinations and left the primary disease unclear. Despite symptomatic therapy, malnutrition and hypovolemia w

Stents in the successful management of protein-losing enteropathy after fontan.

A 5-year-old female presented with anasarca secondary to protein-losing enteropathy after fenestrated extracardiac Fontan. There was no response to digoxin, furosemide, spironolactone and captopril. She had coarctation of the aorta and left pulmonary artery stenosis resistant to multiple surgical and balloon interventions. Stent expansion of these lesions resulted in the patient's recovery from protein-losing enteropathy.

A case of systemic lupus erythematosus presenting with protein-losing enteropathy.

We report an unusual case of systemic lupus erythematosus presented with protein-losing enteropathy. A 24-year-old girl was referred to our hospital with generalized edema, thrombocytopenia, hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia, hypocomplementemia, antinuclear antibody (ANA) (speckled pattern) and anti- SSA/Ro positivities, and elevated CA125 antigen appeared in the blood examination. On the radiological studies, she had mild pleural effusion and moderate ascites which were transudate. A diagnosis of protein-losing enteropathy was made on the basis of increased 99mTc-labelled human immunoglob

Secondary hypoparathyroidism attributed to hypomagnesemia in a dog with protein-losing enteropathy.

Severe hypomagnesemia (0.8 mg/dl; reference range, 1.6 to 2.3 mg/dl), hypocalcemia, and protein-losing enteropathy were identified in a 5-year-old castrated male 3-kg (6.6 lb) Shih Tzu examined because of anorexia, lethargy, paresis, and abdominal distention. Histologic examination of intestinal biopsy specimens revealed lymphangiectasia and lymphocytic, plasmacytic, neutrophilic infiltrates. Initial treatment included administration of magnesium (0.80 mEq/kg [0.36 mEq/lb]) of body weight in a balanced electrolyte solution. This treatment resulted in normalization of the serum magnesium concen

Detection and quantification of protein-losing enteropathy with indium-111 transferrin.

Localisation and quantification of protein loss in protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is useful in the clinical management of hypoalbuminaemia. Indium-111 transferrin offers the opportunity of combining localisation and quantification using a single agent. Twenty-five studies were performed in 23 patients with suspected PLE: 111In-transferrin was prepared by incubating autologous cell-free plasma with 111In chloride in vitro for 15 min. Protein loss was quantified by comparing whole-body counts recorded with an uncollimated gamma camera at 3 h and 5 or 6 days after injection of 111In-transferrin

Protein-losing enteropathy caused by mesenteric vascular involvement of neurofibromatosis.

A 44-year-old man with neurofibromatosis suffered from severe diarrhea and progressive hypoproteinemia. Enteric protein loss was confirmed by an alpha 1-antitrypsin clearance test. An x-ray study showed irregular mucosa in the distal segment of the ileum. Protein loss has subsided after ileocecal resection. Laparotomy and radiological examinations failed to demonstrate neurofibroma or other tumors in the abdomen. The resected ileum revealed marked edema of the wall and a pseudomembranous enteritis-like appearance in the luminal surface. Microscopically, lymphatic vessels in the intestinal wall

Protein-losing enteropathy due to secondary amyloidosis of the gastrointestinal tract.

A case of a 71 year old woman who experienced weight loss, diarrhea and edema due to protein-losing enteropathy caused by amyloidosis secondary to rheumatoid arthritis is described. Amyloid deposits were found in the systemic organs, specifically in the bowel. The arterioles were massively involved within the laminae propriae and many were narrowed considerably due to amyloid deposits. Ulcerative lesions, which were accompanied with the ruptured arterioles, were also found. Lymphangiectasia was present in the submucosa, subserosa and mesenterium. The mesenteric lymphatic vessels were deposited

Case Report: Food Protein-Induced Protein Losing Enteropathy (FPIPLE) in Infancy.

Food-protein induced protein-losing enteropathy (FPIPLE) is a mixed IgE and non-IgE food allergy in infants along with eosinophilic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases (EGID). It is characterized by poor weight gain, edema, due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia by enteral loss of proteins, anemia, eosinophilia, raised fecal α1-antitrypsin (α1AT), and specific-IgE and allergy skin prick test (SPT) positive for offending foods. Here, we describe 4 cases with the same clinical pattern (edema due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia from enteral loss of proteins, confirmed by high α1AT in the stools and

Hypocalcaemia associated with low serum vitamin D metabolite concentrations in two dogs with protein-losing enteropathies.

Protein-losing enteropathies were diagnosed in two dogs that were initially presented with diarrhoea and weight loss. Plasma biochemistry in both cases revealed low concentrations of albumin, calcium and ionised calcium. Both dogs had an elevated plasma parathyroid hormone concentration and low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration. The first dog was diagnosed with lymphangiectasia on postmortem examination, and the second dog was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic/ plasmacytic enteritis and severe cystic mucoid changes based on endoscopic duodenal biopsies. While a causal effect w

Familial protein-losing enteropathy and protein-losing nephropathy in Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers: 222 cases (1983-1997).

Records and pedigrees of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers (SCWT) with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) or protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) were studied retrospectively. Criteria for inclusion were defined based on analysis of blood (panhypoproteinemia for PLE, hypoalbuminemia for PLN) and urine (proteinuria for PLN) and histopathologic examination of tissue. Two hundred twenty-two affected dogs (female:male ratio = 1.6, P < .001) were clinically identified. Dogs were diagnosed with PLE earlier (P < .005; mean +/- SD age: 4.7+/-2.6 years, n = 76) than with PLN (6.3+/-2.0 years, n = 84) or with both

Clinical characteristics and risk factors of protein-losing enteropathy: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is characterized by excessive gastrointestinal protein loss, yet systematic comparative studies across etiologies remain limited. This study aimed to characterize the confirmed PLE cohort in our center, with a focused comparison between connective tissue disease-associated PLE (CTD-PLE) and lymphatic drainage disorder-associated PLE (LDD-PLE), describe follow-up observations, and explore routine clinical indicators that may assist etiologic differentiation. METHODS: This retrospective study included 146 patients admitted to Beijing Shijitan Hospital

Successful Surgical Resection for Protein-Losing Enteropathy Caused by Ischemic Ileitis.

INTRODUCTION: Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a condition characterized by the excessive loss of serum proteins through the gastrointestinal mucosa, which causes hypoalbuminemia and edema. Common causes include inflammatory diseases, neoplastic diseases, lymphatic diseases, and cardiac diseases. However, cases of PLE caused by small bowel ischemia and cured by surgical resection are rare. Herein, we report a case of PLE caused by ischemic ileitis that was successfully treated by surgical resection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman presented with diarrhea and edema. She had cardiovas

Protein losing enteropathy due to congenital disorder of glycosylation: A case report.

Protein-Losing Enteropathy (PLE) is the loss of protein through the gastrointestinal tract, subsequently leading to low levels of protein in the serum. The differential diagnosis for PLE is broad, and treatment is based on identifying and appropriately treating the underlying cause of the PLE. A 2-year-old boy presented with diarrhea, vomiting, edema, anemia, hypoalbuminemia, low serum IgG, and elevated stool alpha-1-antitrypsin, concerning for PLE. Endoscopy/colonoscopy showed mild reactive changes in the gastric and duodenal mucosa and was otherwise normal with no evidence of autoimmune ente

Isolated Lupus-Associated Protein-Losing Enteropathy in a Resource-Limited Centre.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a relatively common autoimmune disease with recently reported cases of lupus-associated protein-losing enteropathy (LUPLE) as an unusual manifestation. It is a well-recognized clinical entity predominantly affecting middle-aged Asian females. LUPLE is diagnosed by exclusion of possible causes for hypoalbuminemia in a patient with positive anti-nuclear antibody (ANA). LUPLE as the first manifestation of SLE is rare but it is a well-recognized complication secondary to SLE. We report a case of a 39-year-old Sri Lankan lady who was investigated for generalize

Protein-Losing Enteropathy in the Setting of Iron Deficiency Anemia: A Case Series.

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) in the setting of severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and excessive cow milk intake is an uncommonly recognized phenomenon. Here, we describe a series of 7 toddlers who presented for evaluation of edema in the setting of excessive cow milk intake between November 2016 and January 2019. Laboratory studies in each patient were consistent with IDA and hypoalbuminemia with evidence of PLE. Diagnostic evaluation and treatment of each patient differed, although all were instructed to restrict cow milk and provided with oral iron supplementation. The edema had resolve
