Morphological features of the gastrointestinal tract of Garganey (Anas querquedula, Linnaeus 1758)-Oesophagus to coprodeum.

The present work was aimed to study the gastrointestinal tract in Garganey from the oesophagus to coprodeum by the aid of the gross morphology, scanning electron microscopy and histology. At the level of the thoracic inlet, the oesophagus had a thick part which had numerous tortuous longitudinal folds carried transverse folds on them. Histologically, the thick part had thick epithelium and appeared more folded with more and larger glands. The mucosa of the proventriculus had mucosal folds appeared as a leaf-like with rounded tips. The openings of the proventriculus glands were projected with p

Ultrasonography of the gastrointestinal tract of toco toucans (Ramphastos toco).

Baseline data for wall thickness in healthy toucans can be used to diagnose disease in sick individuals. This study aimed to evaluate the use of ultrasonography for the examination of the gastrointestinal tract of healthy toco toucans (Ramphastos toco). Ten non-anaesthetized healthy adult toco toucans were evaluated. Food was withheld for 3 h prior to the ultrasound examination. Longitudinal and transverse images of the gastrointestinal tract were obtained using ventromedian cranial and ventromedian caudal approaches to evaluate the morphology and stratification. The wall thickness of the sect

The role of serotonin in feeding and gut contractions in the honeybee.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is involved in the regulation of feeding and digestion in many animals from worms to mammals. In insects, 5-HT functions both as a neurotransmitter and as a systemic hormone. Here we tested its role as a neurotransmitter in feeding and crop contractions and its role as a systemic hormone that affected feeding in adult foraging honeybees. We found 5-HT immunoreactive processes throughout the gut, including on the surface of the oesophagus, crop, proventriculus, and the midgut, as well as in the ventral nerve cord. mRNA transcripts for all four of the known

[The efficiency of Rhadinopsylla rothschildi and R. dahurica fleas as vectors of the causative agent of plague in a Transbaikal natural focus].

Experiments have shown that a block of proventriculus arises in 2.1 to 12.5% of infected fleas of R. rothschildi and in 7.2 to 10.5% of R. dahurica. These fleas transmit the plague agent to different animals (Brandt's vole, narrow-skulled vole, Dahurian suslik). The plague microbe is preserved in the organism of infected insects till the end of the experiment, 74 and 24 days respectively. Therefore, the fleas can play a part in the maintenance of plague epizootics in the Transbaikal natural nidus.

Receptors for the V4 strain of Newcastle disease virus in the digestive tract of chickens.

Enterocytes were detached from various parts of the digestive tract of chickens by treatment with DTT or with hyaluronidase. Isolated enterocytes were exposed to suspensions of the V4 strain of Newcastle disease virus (NDV). Removal of virus from the supernatant fluid was taken as evidence of binding of virus to enterocytes and residual virus was measured both by infectivity assay and by ELISA. Enterocytes from duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, and rectum bound the virus; enterocytes from oesophagus, crop and proventriculus did not.

[Histological study of Ceratophyllus consimilis Wagn. fleas infected with the causative agent of listeriosis (Listeria monocytogenes)].

Histological studies have shown that in experimentally infected fleas (C. consimilis) Listeria are preserved in the alimentary canal. In infected individuals microbes occur along the whole intestine, from oesophagus to the rectum but most often they are recorded from the mid-gut and proventriculus. Listeria are able to penetrate into its muscular tissue and in some cases enter the body cavity of the insect. The finding of Listeria in the oesophagus confirms the possibility of the transmission of the infarction by fleas through the bite without blocking.

Cryptosporidiosis in domestic birds.

From March to June 1982, three cases of avian cryptosporidiosis were encountered in chickens, ducklings, and canaries. The bursa of Fabricius of chickens and ducklings were the main target organs and the agents were found to attach the microvillus border of the plical epithelium. In canaries, the parasites adhered to the microvillus border of mucosal epithelium of the proventriculus. Diagnoses were based on the microscopic pathology, the morphology of the parasites, and the type of attachment to epithelium. This represents the first authenticated evidence of cryptosporidial infection in Taiwan

A new training model for robot-assisted urethrovesical anastomosis and posterior muscle-fascial reconstruction: the Verona training technique.

A training model is usually needed to teach robotic surgical technique successfully. In this way, an ideal training model should mimic as much as possible the "in vivo" procedure and allow several consecutive surgical simulations. The goal of this study was to create a "wet lab" model suitable for RARP training programs, providing the simulation of the posterior fascial reconstruction. The second aim was to compare the original "Venezuelan" chicken model described by Sotelo to our training model. Our training model consists of performing an anastomosis, reproducing the surgical procedure in "v

Is really endogenous ghrelin a hunger signal in chickens? Association of GHSR SNPs with increase appetite, growth traits, expression and serum level of GHRL, and GH.

Chicken growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a receptor for ghrelin (GHRL), a peptide hormone produced by chicken proventriculus, which stimulates growth hormone (GH) release and food intake. The purpose of this study was to search for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 2 of GHSR gene and to analyze their effect on the appetite, growth traits and expression levels of GHSR, GHRL, and GH genes as well as serum levels of GH and GHRL in Mandara chicken. Two adjacent SNPs, A239G and G244A, were detected in exon 2 of GHSR gene. G244A SNP was non-synonymous mutation and led to r

Early Nutrition with Different Diets Composition versus Fasting on Immunity-Related Gene Expression and Histomorphology of Digestive and Lymphoid Organs of Layer-Type Chicks.

Early feeding post-hatching (EFPH) can impact the immune response and modify the immunity-related gene expression. Therefore, we aimed to examine the effects of EFPH with different diets composition versus fasting during the first 72 h of chick's life on the histomorphological structures of the liver, proventriculus, central and peripheral lymphoid organs, and immunity-related genes in layer-type chicks during the brooding period. A total of 400 chicks were randomly allotted into 4 groups with 4 replicates each. The experimental groups during the first 72 h of life were: feed and water depriva

Almond shell as an insoluble fibre source in laying pullets: influence of inclusion level and particle size on performance and intestinal health.

Dietary fibre (DF) is increasingly recognised for its role in poultry nutrition, particularly in supporting gut health. Almond shells (AS), rich in insoluble fibre (IF), represent a potential DF source. This study assessed the effects of fine (FAS) and coarse (CAS) AS included at 1% and 2% (FAS1, FAS2, CAS1, CAS2) compared with a control diet (NC) without supplemental IF on growth performance, dry matter digestibility, organ development, intestinal morphology, gene expression, caecal microbiota, and volatile fatty acids (VFA) in 6-week-old pullets over 28 days. AS inclusion did not influence p

Dusk feeding in laying hens is shifted by light program via involvement of clock genes.

Dusk feeding is practised probably to satisfy the energy requirement during night. However, little is known on the changes with clock gene expressions during this feeding behaviour. In our present study, the linkage of clock gene expressions and feeding behaviour in dusk feeding was investigated in laying hens under two lighting programs: the conventional lighting program (Control) with a light period from 05:00 AM to 21:00 PM and a dark period from 21:00 PM to 05:00 AM; or the shifted lighting program group (SLP) with a light period from 02:00 AM to 18:00 PM and a dark period from 18:00 PM to

[Regulation of c-di-GMP metabolism and biofilm formation in Yersinia pestis].

Yersinia pestis, the cause of plague, is transmitted by flea bite. Y. pestis forms a biofilm in the proventriculus of its flea vector to enhance transmission. Biofilm formation in Y. pestis is positively regulated by the intracellular levels of the second messenger cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP). The c-di-GMP in Y. pestis is synthesized by two diguanylate cyclases (DGC), HmsT and HmsD, and degraded by phosphodiesterase (PDE), HmsP. Here we summarized the regulators that modulate c-di-GMP metabolism and biofilm formation in Y. pestis and discussed their regulatory mechanism.
