Regulating the Spin State Configuration in Bimetallic Phosphorus Trisulfides for Promoting Sulfur Redox Kinetics.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries suffer from sluggish kinetics due to the poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes and polysulfide shutting. Current studies on sulfur redox catalysis mainly focus on the adsorption and catalytic conversion of lithium polysulfides but ignore the modulation of the electronic structure of the catalysts which involves spin-related charge transfer and orbital interactions. In this work, bimetallic phosphorus trisulfides embedded in Prussian blue analogue-derived nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanocubes (FeCoPS3/NCs) were elaborately synthesized as a host to reveal the rela

In Situ Generation of Prussian Blue by MIL-53 (Fe) for Point-of-Care Testing of Butyrylcholinesterase Activity Using a Portable High-Throughput Photothermal Device.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), the primary source of serum cholinesterase activity, is an indispensable biochemical marker for clinical diagnosis of liver function and organophosphorus poisoning. The requirement for bulky and expensive instruments represents a huge hindrance for point-of-care testing (POCT) of BuChE, especially in resource-limited settings. Herein, an easy-operated, economic, and portable photothermal (PT) biosensing platform for high-throughput BuChE detection was rationally designed. BuChE could "light up" the PT signal through in situ generation of Prussian blue (PB) by MIL

Zwitterionic polymer nanocomposite hydrogels with immunoregulation for effectively preventing postoperative abdominal adhesions.

Zwitterionic hydrogels are attractive physical barriers for preventing postoperative abdominal adhesions because of their outstanding antifouling properties; however, their inherent biological inertness and poor degradability often hinder therapeutic efficacy and clinical translational potential. Herein, we report a bioactive and dissociable zwitterionic nanocomposite hydrogel that integrates zwitterionic polymer chains with clearance potential, hydrolytically dissociable networks, and Prussian blue (PB) nanozymes. A molecular-weight-controlled polycarboxybetaine acrylate precursor (PCBOAA, ∼5

Designed synthesis of prussian blue@Cu-doped zinc phosphate nanocomposites for chemo/chemodynamic/photothermal combined cancer therapy.

Designing a multifunctional nanoplatform that combines multiple treatments has emerged as an innovative cancer treatment strategy. A simple and clear route is put forward to develop Cu2+-doped zinc phosphate coated prussian blue nanoparticles (designated as PB@Cu2+/ZnP NPs) integrating tri-modal therapy (chemo, chemodynamic and photothermal therapy) for maximizing anti-tumor efficacy. The obtained PB@Cu2+/ZnP NPs possess drug loading capacity due to the mesoporous structure present in the Cu2+-doped ZnP shell. In addition, the Cu2+-doped ZnP shell can gradually degrade in response to the mildl

Enzyme-Free Colorimetric Immunoassay for Protein Biomarker Enabled by Loading and Disassembly Behaviors of Polydopamine Nanoparticles.

In this work, a mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticle with biocompatible and reactive surface characteristics was desirably incorporated with high loading capacity and pH-induced disassembly-releasing behavior toward Fe(III) ions to develop an enzyme-free colorimetric immunoassay. The catechol functional network of PDA can act as a scaffold to coordinate with large amounts of Fe(III) ions to form the PDA-Fe(III) NPs whose coordination state can be tailored by changing the pH values. In detail, PDA-Fe(III) NPs can be maintained in a disassembled tri-coordinate state under alkaline con

Prussian Blue Analogue-derived co/fe bimetallic nanoparticles immobilized on S/N-doped carbon sheet as a magnetic heterogeneous catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate in water.

While Co is the most effective metal for activating PMS, extensive efforts are made to develop Co/Fe species (CF) (e.g., CoFe2O4) for imparting magnetic properties and facilitating recovery of catalysts. When carbon substrates are doped with heteroatoms (e.g., S and N) and CF is embedded within the heteroatom-doped carbon matrix, synergies can occur to boost catalytic activities. This study proposes an alternative CF-bearing carbonaceous composite, a cobalt-containing Prussian Blue Analogue (PBA) (Co3[Fe(CN)6]2) is employed as a precursor for preparing CF species embedded in N-doped carbon mat

Porous Nanobimetallic Fe-Mn Cubes with High Valent Mn and Highly Efficient Removal of Arsenic(III).

Iron (Fe) oxides are the most commonly used adsorbent materials for the aqueous removal of Arsenic (As), but they have deficiencies, including low uptake and poor removal of the relatively higher toxicity As(III). Introduction of transition metals into Fe-containing adsorbents, an inexpensive method of altering Fe chemical states, is likewise of interest for removing As(III) from water by means of adsorption. Porous cubic Fe-Mn structures with BET surface area of 450 m2 g-1 were herein prepared via chemical etching of Mn-substituted Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs). Cyclic voltammetry showed a "

Hallervorden-Spatz disease in an adult patient.

Hallervorden-Spatz disease (HSD) is an extremely rare degenerative process. The familial studies point to inherited, autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder. Quite recently this disease gene has been identified to chromosome 20p12.3-p13. Clinical manifestations of HSD leading to death after several years of illness are most frequently observed in childhood. HSD in adults is very scarce. The case reported concerns a woman who at the age of 26 years began to suffer from slowly progressing psycho-organic syndrome with muscular rigidity, involuntary movements and dysarthria. The patient was

Megalin-targeted Mg-Fe cyanometallate framework nanozymes calibrate mitochondrial iron-calcium homeostasis to treat acute kidney injury.

Intracellular metal ion homeostasis, particularly the precise regulation of mitochondrial iron and calcium, is essential for maintaining energy metabolism and cell survival. Once disrupted, iron-mediated oxidative reactions and calcium overload mutually amplify, rapidly leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cellular injury. In acute kidney injury (AKI), this mitochondria-centered iron-calcium imbalance represents a critical pathological axis driving oxidative stress, programmed cell death, and inflammation. However, effective therapies that coordinately regulate both processes are not yet a

In Situ-Grown Graphdiyne Interfaces on Cu-Retained CoCuFe Phosphide-Like Octahedra for Overall Water Splitting.

A Cu-retention-assisted precursor-conversion strategy is developed to construct a graphdiyne (GDY)-coupled CoCuFe phosphide-like heterostructure for alkaline water electrolysis. Octahedral Cu2O directs the particle morphology and serves as a Cu source, whereas the CoFe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) shell supplies the Co and Fe species required to form the multimetal phosphide-like framework. In situ growth of GDY preserves the precursor-derived architecture and establishes interfacial contact between the π-conjugated GDY layer and the phosphide-like domain. The resulting GDY@P-CoCuFe requires o

Synergistic Modification of Fe-Based Prussian Blue Cathode Material Based on Structural Regulation and Surface Engineering.

The Fe-based Prussian blue (Fe-PB) composite is considered as one of the most potential cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of its abundant iron resources and high theoretical capacity. However, the crystal water and vacancy in the Fe-PB structure will lead to poor capacity and cycle stability. In this work, a Cu-modified Fe-PB composite (FeCu-PB@CuO) is successfully prepared through regulating the Fe-PB structure by Cu doping and engineering the surface by CuO coating. The density functional theory calculation results confirm that Cu preferentially replaces FeHS in the Fe-PB la

Multifunctional nanoparticles of sinomenine hydrochloride for treat-to-target therapy of rheumatoid arthritis via modulation of proinflammatory cytokines.

Sinomenine is a bioactive alkaloid isolated from the Chinese medicinal plant of Sinomenium acutum (Thunb.) Rehd.et Wils. Currently, sinomenine hydrochloride (SIN) preparations, classified as a natural disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (nDMARD), have been used for therapy of rheumatoid arthritis (RA); however, the efficacy of SIN was seriously limited by its short half-life, low bioavailability, and dose-dependent adverse reactions. In this study, a biomimetic nanocomplex based on Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) was developed for overcoming clinical limitations of SIN and accordingly i

Point-of-care detection of prostate cancer through surface protein profiling on extracellular vesicles using colorimetric 3D paper-based analytical devices.

Surface proteins on tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are frequently associated with tumorigenesis and progression. The effective evaluation of surface protein profiles on plasma EVs provides a reliable method for cancer diagnosis due to their high abundance (>108 particles/mL) and sustainable availability. However, quantifying the protein population on EVs is hampered by the difficulty of isolation, and the limited sensitivity of current EVs protein assays. In this study, we developed novel 3D paper-based analytical devices (PADs) for the digital quantification of EVs based on a colo

Demonstration of yellow fever and dengue antigens in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded human liver by immunohistochemical analysis.

Two immunohistochemical techniques to determine the presence of yellow fever and dengue antigens in fixed tissue samples were developed for the purpose of making retrospective diagnoses of these viral diseases in humans. A horseradish peroxidase label was used for one technique and an alkaline phosphatase label for the other. In the former technique, acid hematin was removed from the tissues, iron-containing pigments were counterstained with Prussian blue, and the product of the diaminobenzidine reaction was enhanced with a dilute solution of osmium tetroxide that differentiated antigen from l

A Tumor Microenvironment-Triggered Calcium Ion and Hydroxyl Radical Amplifier with Near-Infrared Absorption for Photoacoustic Imaging-Guided Calcium Overload-Synergized Multimodal Cancer Therapy.

Calcium overload therapy represents a highly promising therapeutic strategy and has attracted extensive attention in the field of tumor treatment. Nevertheless, the challenge of achieving high-concentration and precise enrichment of calcium ions inside tumors seriously hinders the clinical translation of this therapy. Moreover, monotherapy fails to deliver superior anti-tumor efficacy. To address such issues, a tumor microenvironment (TME)-triggered calcium ion and hydroxyl radical amplifier with near-infrared absorption (CuMPB@CaCO3@HA) is presented to process calcium overload-synergized mult

A novel macrophage membrane-camouflaged ultra-small copper sulfide and photothermal-responsive nitric oxide donor nanocomposites for enhanced synergistic antitumor therapy.

Ultra-small copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles (NPs) possess exceptional photothermal performance, Fenton-like reaction activities, and multimodal imaging characteristics, while sodium nitroprusside serves as a clinical nitric oxide (NO) donor. A judicious combination of these two agents may facilitate the development of a novel multimodal synergistic antitumor strategy. In this context, we developed macrophage membrane-camouflaged and folic acid-conjugated nanocomposites (MF-SPC) that demonstrate dual responsiveness to near-infrared (NIR) laser and pH, aiming to enhance multimodal synergistic

Nature-inspired confined cascade enzyme nanoreactors for targeted atherosclerosis therapy.

Oxidative stress and excessive inflammatory responses are major drivers of atherosclerosis (AS) formation and progression. In this study, we report a nature-inspired nanoreactor (named USPB@SeDMSN@NM) with superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) multienzymatic activities for targeted atherosclerosis therapy. The confined cascade nanocatalyst (USPB@SeDMSN) is designed by assembling ultrasmall Prussian blue nanoparticles (USPB NPs, SOD and CAT mimics) into the large pores of selenium (Se)-doped dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (SeDMSNs, GPx mimics).

Decoding bacterial identity and resistance through D-amino acid metabolic fingerprinting with a cascade colorimetric sensor array.

The rapid rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a global health crisis, demanding diagnostic tools capable of simultaneous bacterial identification and rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) in a single workflow. Herein, a colorimetric sensor array was developed to address this need by profiling bacterial metabolic fingerprints via a streamlined single-substrate, multi-wavelength strategy. The strategy is built upon the inherent bacteria-specific metabolism of D-amino acids (D-AAs), coupled with the enzymatic selectivity of D-amino acid oxidase (DAAO), which catalyzes the o
